4 card deck by turn 2

It's possible to open doctor with Baker on the board, trash 3 estates with it, then buy a Mint with your next $5. Your deck now consists of 4 cards; Doctor, Mint, Copper, Copper

The question is, would this ever be a good idea?

That would work. If you buy one on turn 3, then you can get 2 more on turn 4, and probably 2 more every turn. You'll probably be able to trash the Mint with the Doctor once the FG pile out, and maybe trash last 2 coppers as well.

Stonemason might be able to make something good out of Mint and Doctor.

Squire is a very fast way to get some Silvers to mint.

Any other card with +$1 is a guaranteed a silver gain Silver the next turn. Lighthouse is a guaranteed Silver, then a guaranteed $5 with another Silver gain.

I could imagine a deck where after this point you just keep buying Candlestick Makers might work, but it's probably too slow Maybe with Bakers once you start hitting $5.

Many $2 cards are useless, of course.

T3: buy candlestick maker
T4: buy 2 poorhouses, have coin token stored

deckstate: 2 poorhouses, 2 copper, doctor, mint, candlestickmaker, coin token

Of course, you're going for Gardens, right?

I currently imagine mail-mi wearing a dark trenchcoat and a bowler hat, hunched over a bit, toothpick in his mouth, holding a gun in his pocket.  One bead of sweat trickling down his nose.

'And what is it that ye shall hope for? Behold I say unto you that ye shall have hope through the atonement of Christ and the power of his resurrection, to be raised unto life eternal, and this because of your faith in him according to the promise." - Moroni 7:41, the Book of Mormon

Fool's Gold maybe?

Would opening plain Fool's Gold/Mint work better?

The same overpay of Doctor with the same Estate trashing, playing Doctor on turn 2 leaves you with 2 more Coppers, but a 4 (or 3) card in exchange. I think that, depending on the board, this might be a faster open.
