Hey everyone, I am new to this board.

I looked around but couldn't find this particular answer.  The Governor says the following

"+1 Action
Choose one; you get the version in parentheses: Each player gets +1 (+3) Cards; or each player gains a Silver (Gold); or each player may trash a card from his hand and gain a card costing exactly $1 ($2) more."

When using the Trash option, I noticed something a bit weird, this particularly regards trashing curses.  For the player who plays governor, you can trash a curse for a card costing 2 (Estate or some Kingdom card for example).  But, at least in my Kingdoms, there are no cards costing $1.  The rule specifically states that other players "may trash a card from his hand and gain a card costing exactly $1 more".  What if there are no cards costing exactly $1 more?  Are you not allowed to trash that card?  Can you trash that card and gain nothing?  We decided that other players were not allowed to trash their curses (or coppers since they have the same problem) when someone plays a Governor, but would love to get your answer to this.

Thanks.

They can trash and gain nothing.

You can always chose any option that is presented to you, even if you can only partially do what the option tells you to do.  In that case, do as much as you can and ignore the rest.

As DStu says, you can trash and gain nothing.  The exception is if Poor House is on the board.

This. Note that similar applies to Develop, Upgrade or Remake if there is no card costing $1 in the kingdom (the only one costing $1 is Poor House currently)

Well, if a single Highway is played, you would have to take an Estate, now costing $1.

Isn't every topic on here a chance to point out edge cases? I thought so at least.
Or maybe this is the edge case to that.  ;D

With 9 Highways played, the other player can trash Copper for Colony. But then you can trash Poor House for Colony! That's why you should always stock up on Poor Houses in Governor Colony games where the other player gets 9 of the Highways!

EDIT: Nope. Every card will cost $0 except Colony. Sorry. :p

Except of course that Poor House costs 0 after 9 Highways and Colony costs 2, so that doesn't work.

The answer has been given clearly and succinctly in the first post. Let us now proceed with 3 pages of confusing discussion and edge cases.

Pleeeeeease! Can we, oh can we???

Beware of edge case trolls.

I just tend to see everything as a puzzle.

Please don't do that in threads where new players are asking for help with simple things. There's plenty of other threads for that. Not everything has to be a puzzle with edge cases.

The key advice is "Do everything you can, and don't do anything you can't." So the card says "Each player may trash a card from his hand ..." so anyone with cards in hand can do that. It then says "... and gain a card costing 1 (2) more", which anyone can do if they trashed a card and there is a card costing 1 (2) more on the board. Similarly, if you play any other card that tells you to trash a card (or cards) from your hand and gain another card, you can always do the trashing regardless of whether you can gain something - but by the same reckoning, if there *is* a card you can gain, you have to gain it, so if you play Governor and trash a Copper, you *must* gain something costing $2 which in many games will be an Estate.

Speaking of edge cases, I remember a game where someone played a single Highway before playing Governor and choosing the trashing option - anyone who trashed a Copper assuming they'd get nothing back had a nasty surprise coming :)

Edge case to this rule: the rules question asked is specifically about an edge case.
