Dear Dominion Lovers,

If our beloved game of Dominion has shown us something, it's that there's always room for more cards. With Hinterlands around the corner, the number of Dominion cards will exceed 150 and the number of possible kingdoms will exceed 3 Gazillion. Still, true fans of the game have always found that there was a certain card missing, or maybe they just wanted to add their touch to this fantastic game.

That's why I've decided to organize a Dominion Fan Card Contest!

In order to be an actual contest, it needs a prize.
How about having your card printed in the next expansion after Hinterlands?
I'm sorry, that's probably not possible, since Donald has designed and playtested all expansions already.

Instead, I am offering a $10 Amazon Gift Card to the winner!
That and eternal glory, fame and honor of course.


Now, let's get on with the official part.

A real contest needs real rules, so here they are.

Entrance
1. Each user may only enter one card into the contest, so choose wisely, I will not accept follow-ups or replacements.
2. Cards must be submitted to me through PMs and can be submitted until Friday October 21 19:00 GMT. Do not post them here!
3. Once a card has been submitted, it may not be changed by the user, any submission is final, so once again, choose wisely. Even changing the cost will not be accepted.

Cards
1. Each submitted card must be compatible with all other official Dominion cards and Promos, not including Hinterlands.
2. Each card should either have a simple effect (like +1 Buy, +1 Action) or have its effect flow logically from its text. Cards that require a pagelong FAQ may be accepted at my discretion, but may not get much votes. Edge cases will always exist but a card designer should try to minimize them by making the text concise and clear.
3. Cards should adhere to current mechanics as much as possible. For example, introducing a new "phase" is not allowed. A card should do its work during either the Action (Duration), Buy or Clean-Up phase. If in doubt, keep it simple. Also, introducing something nifty like negative VP counters is not encouraged, since you're only submitting one card and something like this should be reserved for an entire set. Focus on designing a card that works well with the current set.
4. Each card should have either one of the current types (Treasure, Action(-Attack), Reaction, Prize, Victory or Curse) or at most two of those types, just like the current cards.
5. Plagiary will not be accepted. While some ideas may be very common, blatant copycat behavior will not be approved. Even if I do, I doubt it will get you many votes.
6. Cards don't need any art, just the text is good enough.

Voting System
1. After I have received all entries and the submission time has passed, I will publish the card list in alphabetical order and without the users who submitted them.
2. From this time until Wednesday October 26th 19:00 GMT votes can be cast by any registered member in the following order: 1. Top card, 2. My number 2, 3. My number 3 card.
3. Every #1 card will receive 3 points, every #2 card will receive 2 points and every #3 card will receive 1 point.
4. After the voting closes, the points will be tallied up and the card with the most points will be the winner! At that time, the winning contributor will also be disclosed.
5. Any post with votes may not be edited. If they are, the votes are void. If you feel you need to add something, just place another post, do not edit your original post and risk losing your vote.
6. Of course, every user is only permitted to cast his 3 votes one time.
7. Any attempt to influence the votes including, but not limited to, advertising your card here or elsewhere, revealing which card you have designed and creating bogus accounts to vote for your own card, will lead to immediate disqualification.
8. Of course, you can't vote for your own card. You may however, vote for someone else's card, as long as it isn't clear you deliberately passed on your own card, letting other members know it was your card.

Winning!
1. As mentioned earlier, the winner will receive a $10 Gift card from Amazon from me and eternal fame, glory and honor.
2. In case of a tie, the prize pool of $10 will be split amongst the tying members.

Organization
1. I reserve the right as host to add to these rules if it may prove necessary. I hope it will not be, but you never know when some less obvious edge case will crop up.

Addendum

While it is obviously impossible sometimes to remove the links between a user and the card he or she created, as some cards will have already been posted either here on BGG, voters and users should always respect and keep in mind the fairness of this competition.

The basic idea to hide the users is to discourage favoritism among users. While we cannot guarantee a 100% honest competition, this should be strived for nonetheless.

Any hint or question in the form of: "Hey ....., is that your card" or "I think .... sent in that card" is not acceptable. If some users happen to stumble across a posted card elsewhere, they should keep this information to themselves. I only ask of them that they just vote for the cards they like best, regardless of the creator.


Important Voting Addendum!

After a good night's sleep I have to decided to make the voting system the same as the submission system, by PM. I don't want the voters to be able to see the current score which may encourage or discourage them from voting or allow them to vote strategically. A card should receive votes, because it's good, not because it's either at the top or at the bottom of the current standings. Revealing which card you voted for in this topic and why, is only allowed after the results have been posted.

You could just say "Sent in my votes." in this topic to let people know you are actively participating in and following this topic.

The same rules about not being able to change your votes after they have been sent in still apply.


Competition

I have received the very first card already! I hope there will be many more to follow!
Do not be shy about sending in your card, it's hard to judge whether a card is good or bad. You may think your card is bad, but it may be loved by the community. I remember when I thought Chapel was a bad card, those were fun times.

Every user is free to enter any card he or she likes, but since you are just submitting one card, I think such a specialistic card may not cut it.

Imagine that Alchemy did not exist and someone submitted Familiar and told us that we have to include a Potion to use it. Alchemy has the requirement that you use at least 3 cards from the set if you include them, and because of the Potion this is a wise choice (even though a lot of cards are powerful enough that you'd buy them if they were the only P-costing cards and some cards from Alchemy don't have P-costs). If you submit a single card with some special requirements, I don't think it's really compatible enough with the other cards.


As a sidenote, I may decide to remove the names from the cards and just post them under a placeholder name or a simple number. This to increase fairness. You might think I'm going overboard with this, but I just want to do right by every user who has put in enough effort to think of some nice card.


Futhermore, I encourage you te explore the new Hinterlands cards. Even though we do not know all cards yet, including a "when you buy/gain this card" clause on your card may add to its flavor. Or it may hit and miss completely, that's always the risk.

A nice general advise when creating fan cards is trying to keep it simple, but maybe that's the hard part as well.

After that time, I will post a list of all the cards without their users and with placeholder names.

Closing Time!

Without further ado, I give you the list of cards waiting for your votes.
They are in no particular order and the names are placeholders, semi-randomly chosen by me.
These names have no relation to the cards at all (so don't judge them), they are just for voting purposes.

Please take your time reading all of these cards, feel free to playtest them with your own gaming group.
If you have any questions about the cards, I will not answer them.
It was up to the card makers to provide cards that explain themselves, some cards have rulebook suggestions provided by the authors.

I have changed minor parts of some cards to make them more like the original Dominion cards and like the other entries. I have not touched on their explanations, just some capital letters, switching around a $ and + sign, small things like that.

Aphrodite - $9

If played as an Action: +$2, +1 <VP>.
If played as a Treasure: +$1 for every Treasure you have in play, including this one.

Rulebook: If a previous Aphrodite was played as an Action, a subsequent Aphrodite played as a Treasure will count it as a Treasure in play. Also, the act of buying a Mint will trash it.


Bacchus - $6
Action - Duration

If you would draw a Card while Bacchus is in play, instead gain +1 <VP>.


Ceres - $4
Action

Reveal a Card from your hand. Trash a copy of it from the Supply.

Rulebook:  Anything the Treasure card would have done when played does not happen. Multiple Fortuna reactions are resolved in turn order starting from the person who played the Treasure. Only the first Fortuna to resolve will take the treasure card. Additional Fortunas will still go to the Treasure player's hand, but they miss the Treasure because it is not where Fortuna is looking.
Using the reaction of a Reaction-Attack card is considered "playing an attack card" that can trigger things such as Moat.

Rulebook: If an Action or Reaction card is Noxed, people can still play this (re)action but it has no effect. If a Treasure card is Noxed, people can still play this Treasure but it has no value. If a Victory card is Noxed, nothing special happens. When the game ends, trash Noxed cards (if any) before counting your points.

Return this card to the supply. If you do, gain an Osiris token. At the end of the game, if you have the most Osiris tokens, all your Estates are worth 3 VP.

If you discarded a Victory card, gain a Victory card with a cost less than that of the discarded card and put it on top of your deck.
If you discarded an Action card, gain a Treasure card with a cost less than or equal to that of the discarded card and put it in your hand.
If you discarded a Treasure card, all other players gain a Curse.
If you discarded a Curse, +1 card and all other players gain a Copper.


Sol - $3
Victory

At the end of the game, count the total number of Sols in all players' decks. If the total is an odd number, multiply each players' Victory Point total by negative one. If the total is an even number, nothing happens.


Terra - $5
Action

Choose one: Draw until you have 6 cards in hand; or +$1 and discard 1 or more cards from your hand.

You are allowed to give your point of view on the contest as a whole or just post some random banter.

Please be kind of enough to submit your votes. The card designers did their best in creating their beloved cards, it's only fair you'll spend 10 minutes of your time to submit your votes.

A message to our designers: Voting for your own card is not allowed, but you are allowed to vote for other cards. Do not "swap" votes with other designers!

I guess an argument could be made for either choice. I just decided to do it this way.
I don't think it matters too much in the end; some of the names of the official Dominion cards seem arbitrary as well.
You could create a card named "Castle" and it could do a plethora of different things.

I just didn't want to draw attention away from the card's actual effects and wanted the voting to focus on that, but you could say that the name is an integral part of the card (and the designer's idea) and I understand if you do. I simply chose this way of doing it.

Masked names is the more professional choice and a pretty sound call.  It does have real implications of course, but what can you do eh. (Would you consider Hinterland's Jack-of-all-Trades the same without its name?  I don't think I would.)

There's some other questions to consider as well.  If we had never heard of Chapel, and it was on this list, would we correctly identify its value to the game?  Half of us would probably veto it for being useless without curse attacks, and the other half would veto it as grossly undercost. 

What about Gardens?  Watchtower?  Monument?  Outpost?  Fool's Gold, Crossroads, Trader, Tunnel?  I personally enjoy Possession, but if I saw it on this list I'd probably give it last place without a second thought.  If someone tried submitting Tournament, we'd probably laugh them out of town.

All of these cards are of course fantastic, some even the best of what Dominion has to offer.  However, we have only become familiar with the gameplay, variety, and strategy they add to the game through experience.

It's just something to ponder.  Don't let me rain on any parades.

Well CENSORED is clearly the superior card. The ability for it to REDACTED all of your DELETED would be key in any game of Dominion. And the +X BLANK is just icing on the cake!

I know it's hard to judge cards at face value without any real world play.
That being said, I think good players are able to judge more or less correctly how good a card can be.
Then again, even good players can swing and miss with new cards and discovering how to put them to good use is part of the fun!

You could pick the cards you see as the most promising, most challenging or the most fun!

Edit: I fixed two typos, Iris should be marked as an Attack and Minerva's line for Estates now correctly reads +1 Card .... instead of +C Cards.

Still, I'd like some more votes so the results are more justified.
