GOKODOM I: Round 4 Results and Discussion
« on: May 06, 2013, 08:39:03 am »

Round 4 of GokoDom I is here.

How to Play Your Match

1. Go to the spreadsheet and find your name.  Your opponent for this round is right next to your name.  PM that person and work out an agreeable time to play, and choose a room to meet in--I suggest something unlikely to be crowded. Match Results are due no later than Monday 13 May 2013 at 1200 GMT -- 0800 EDT -- 0500 PDT.

2. The player with the most sets will host each game using random cards in Unrated mode.  That player should also take responsibility for saving game logs.

3. The first player for the first game will be decided randomly by Goko.

4. The player who lost the previous game will be the first player for the next game.  This may require you to resign/restart a game.  In Unrated mode, it doesn't matter who resigns.

5. If a game was tied, the player who was the second player in the tie game will be the first player in the next game.

6. Play a minimum of three games, and a maximum of six games, based on the next section.  If any game was a tie, the sixth game will be played.

How to Score Your Match

1. The following situations automatically settle the match:

A. Player A has three wins after 3 or 4 games.  Player A wins.
B. After six games, neither player has won three games.  The match is a draw.

2. If, after 5 games, the match is 3-2, then:

A. If the leader played the first game, win or loss, as the second player, the match is over, and that player wins.
B. If the leader played the first game, win or loss, as the first player, play a sixth game, with the leader as the second player.  If the leader wins or ties that game, he wins the match; otherwise the match ends in a draw.

How to Post Your Match

In this thread, make a post that includes links to your game logs, the final score, and the winner and loser of the match.

You must post your results by the deadline listed above.

What If We Can't Figure Out a Time?

There are two situations here:

If you have sent a PM to your opponent, but they have not responded to two separate PMs, send me a PM.  If they do not respond, you will be awarded a win by default.
If both players are in contact but are unable to find a mutually agreeable time, both players should send me PMs; both players will receive a draw by default.

What does "bye" mean?

I currently imagine mail-mi wearing a dark trenchcoat and a bowler hat, hunched over a bit, toothpick in his mouth, holding a gun in his pocket.  One bead of sweat trickling down his nose.

Since we have an odd number of players, one player gets a free win every round. Tha's called a bye.

Kirian, I already mentioned this but I think you didn't see: I now have all the sets.

It means we have an odd number of players, and you receive a bye for the round; you won't play a match this round.  Alas, this is always true for an odd number.

I will. I love a good challenge.
(This is why I vastly prefer Swiss to straight elimination... you don't feel horribly unlucky when you draw high-level opponents before the quarterfinals.)

Makes complete sense to me. This is actually a good reason for Goko to have the ability to view other match-ups. As the better players start to have their matchups, I bet there are some really good series going on where others might be interested in watching them, assuming the players were okay with the games being viewed by others. Clearly should not be a priority for them considering all of the other issues of course...and I'm not even sure if it's something they plan to implement. But I remember reading some conversation about this topic at some point!

I think there may be an error in the spreadsheet; the person listed as my opponent has someone else listed as their opponent, and there's someone else that has me listed as their's. In fact it looks like there's a loop that goes me -> Joseph2302 -> MrHaas -> zaubererer -> me.

You guys are obviously supposed to play a 4-player game.

I see what I did; I switched two of the positions to fix a point where two people would have played each other twice... then forgot to fix the other two positions.

I have to find some way to automate this!  Alas, Challonge was not up to the challenge.

Geronimoo wins 3 - 1 vs Qvist

This game was the most interesting. My opponent goes for something enginy with Ironmongers and Monuments while I stick to Monuments and money. He gets $7 a lot this game so I win, but his strategy might have been a little better. Not sure.

Tdog Defeats Yed 3-0-2.

Game 1: http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130506/log.51102b6ee4b06719e45eef9d.1367867903240.txt Tdog 20- Yed 20

A sea hag game where we both transition into a juicy engine powered by cities, wharves, and bridges. We both build up after the curses are depleted then on turn 19 for him and 20 for me we grab province and 3 estates. He ends it thereafter with a city and 2x estate buy to deplete 3 piles. A very even game here, I get the tie due to a victory in the cursing war.

Game 2: http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130506/log.51102b6ee4b06719e45eef9d.1367868701165.txt Tdog 26- Yed 26

Yeah, that's right, 2 ties in a row! The name of this game was rebuild. Our decks end up looking very similar, I grab a few more rebuilds, he gets a ghost ship and more silvers. An interesting decision popped up in the middle here, with the duchies gone. Do you name estate, risking province-province, or province risking estate into estate/feodum. On the last turn I name estate, turn province back into itself, leading to the tie.

Game 3: http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130506/log.51102b6ee4b06719e45eef9d.1367869416662.txt Tdog 84- Yed 77

A game with 161 points without colony! He goes for a trashed down bishop into stables plan, while I go for silk roads. Silk roads had a a decent amount of support, with island providing a disappearing green card. He trashes almost everything in his deck, causing him to get a lot of vp chips but a limp into the finish. I grab 25 VP cards, good for 6 point Silk Roads and the win. Cool to see a game with ambassador and chapel left behind.

Game 4: http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130506/log.51102b6ee4b06719e45eef9d.1367870057161.txt Tdog 25- Yed 25 (Tdog on turns).

Yeah, yet another tie score here! This one was very interesting, with 4 curses and 4 "counters" (Masq, menagerie as bane, moat, junk dealer). I grab the 5-2 split, and elect to avoid curses to go for heavy trashing/defense with junk dealer and moat. He just grabs the single sea hag, in the end only 2 curses are distributed, and I trash them both. We both kept our decks very simple, with death cart here for mid game momentum. I break PPR on the second to last turn, and then he picks up the last province, ending it with a tie, and giving me the win on turns.

Game 5: http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130506/log.51102b6ee4b06719e45eef9d.1367870702958.txt Tdog 30- Yed 27

This was most likely the least interesting of the bunch. Not much going on, with knights the only okayish card. I get sir michael vs natalie, which gives me a nice advantage there. Otherwise, I grab a few mystics, and pull out the win.

Thanks for the games yed! I think all were very very close, and a bunch of interesting boards. Good luck with the rest of the way!

With Bishop/Chapel here you could've gone for the golden deck. I feel like that could've outraced the silk road slog, although with ambassador I guess you could always pick that up and try to throw some extra crap at the other player to mess it up. Pretty interesting different approaches there!

Yes, I didn't even think about Golden Deck but it very well may have been the best option.

I'd like to thank Green Opal for waiting tonight when I was struggling to find time for our match. It finished 3-1 in my favour with a lot of fast games with bias for first player or strong draws. I've only got logs for the last two. For the last one I think Green Opal had lost count of the score and I'd missed a 3 pile ending so it could have gone wrong either way.

http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130506/log.505da8ce51c359e6597efefa.1367870760123.txt Geronimoo 31 - Qvist 22

Bad luck strikes again. Well, I probably would have lost with good luck too, so yeah. Here's the video:

Comments:

Game 1: Geronimoo is a pretty good BM player and I told to myself that if any possible I won't play a BM mirror match. I kinda expected that he will go straight Monument BM, so I chose the engine which will play many Monuments a turn. It worked out pretty good and got to a small lead after being behind pretty fast. And then I made a couple of errors which I saw on the rewatch. I wanted the Apprentice because it's the only source of draw, but picke up a second Merchant Ship instead. That was an error. On terminal collisions, I think I chose Monument too often over Merchant Ship and I probably shouldn't have contested the Duchies. I rather play more Monuments each turn. So after getting bad hands he broke PPR and managed to hit me on a bad hand while he got another good hand and win the game.

Game 2: Man, this game was horrible. Unfortunately no engine here. Mountebank BM it was. He got only Mountebanks and money while I trashed with Lookout and Moneylender. Maybe not a good idea, but I was unfortunate to not hit $5 (I know that Lookout won't help me to get there, but I thought Moneylender helps me enough). My Lookout found Coppers instead of Estates and after 2 Mountebanks I rather picked up an Embassy for basically a guaranteed Province after each play. After like 5 $7 hands there was no chance for me anymore (I really like to know the number of $7s I got here, but I just couldn't rewatch it, please leave a comment). But I tried it and after Moneylenders with no Coppers and more unlucky Lookouts the Duchies were gone and I trashed some more Curses I bought the Province for a tie and loss on turns. One of the most depressing games ever.

Game 3: Border Village/Vault/Tunnel game where I won because of first player and because I chose Duchy over Tunnel close before the end. Not really much to say here besides of Bishop would have been pretty good here to trash the Golds we were getting. Not sure how to incorporate this tough. But I won, no need to worry about that now.

Game 4: 5/2 on a board with weak $2s and where Forager/JaoT opening is obvious. Another money based game and I got screwed by the opening. Geronimoo played this one pretty good. Here he took a more enginey approach with Forager, JaoT, Shanty Town and Library while I focussed on cycling with Stables, gaining silvers with Jack and trashing and buy of Forager. I was 1 point ahead (because I still had another Estate in my deck) close to the end, with 2 Provinces left. He could buy Province/Estate which means that I could tie with another Province. And guess what? Another time $7

Good luck Geronimoo for the rest of the tournament and I can now already practice for GokoDom2.

I thought about Golden Deck, but decided not to go for it because of Ambassador.

michaeljb 3-1 ftl

Game 1 - http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130506/log.50612a9b51c36e573294bfd0.1367896662902.txt
michaeljb 77-57 ftl

I picked up some Golems, only realizing a few turns after my Potion buy that they were likely to colide with Ruins. I got a lucky turn 6 Platinum, and won the Ruins split 6-4. I think the early Platinum was the main reason I won, not sure if there's more to say.

Game 2 - http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130506/log.50612a9b51c36e573294bfd0.1367896926438.txt
ftl 15-15 michaeljb (won on turns)

Workshop/Gardens rush mirror; I only grabbed 3 Workshops, ftl got the rest, and was unlucky to end the game with 29 cards in his deck (I had 27).

Game 3 - http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130506/log.50612a9b51c36e573294bfd0.1367897521775.txt
ftl 36-28 michaeljb

I was looking to trash down with Steward to improve Ventures, and picked up a Squire on a $2 hand, figuring its Silver-gaining would also help Ventures. I was only able to trash 3 of my Coppers. ftl got 2 Squires to gain more Silvers, and stole one of Silvers via Rogue, and came out ahead.

Game 4 - http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130506/log.50612a9b51c36e573294bfd0.1367898440773.txt
michaeljb 41-39 ftl

I got some Treasuries, a couple Oases, Militias, and an Oracle; ftl went for the Scrying Pool engine that could play Possession and some Noble Brigands that made it almost impossible for me to hit $8 again. I did luckily hit $8 to get the last Province and win by 2 Estates.

Overall, I was definitely lucky to win the series, especially by 2 whole games. Thanks to ftl for the good games, and good luck in the rest of the tourney.

I watched your videos and I don't understand why you outright dismissed Mystic. I think it's alot better here than Merchant Ship, because of Ironmonger (which lets you see the card, so if it's a card you actually want you'll guess correctly) and because it's non-terminal, so that you never have to make the choice between Mystic and Monument. It's also really good in super trim decks. To that end I'd have gotten two foragers. If you're going engine you want those starting cards out of the way asap. You also didn't forage a Silver until very late in the game. Had you done that at the first possible opportunity, each subsequent Copper trash would have given you $2. Yes, you also help your opponent, but you help yourself more because you cycle faster and ideally you have two foragers vs. his one.

Faster trashing also ensures that your action density increases, which means that 1) your post-ironmonger Mystic guesses will be right more often as you want to keep your actions and 2) ironmonger starts giving you a +action most of the time, so that you can play two Monuments per turn more often and perhaps even buy a third one.
