What is your favorite village?

I'm not a village idiot, but I love villages. Chaining actions is a lot of fun. So, I thought I would make a thread asking what everyone's favorite village is.

My favorite is Fishing Village. It is a bit overpowered for a village, if you ask me, but there is no doubt it is the ultimate engine building card.

Bandit Camp and Wandering Minstrel get honorable mentions. I love the spoils gaining of Bandit Camp, and I love how in some games this can actually be detrimental. For Wandering Minstrel, it offers both shifting and plus action. If you have no form of trashing, Minstrel is a decent substitute.

So, what is everyone's favorite village?

Fishing village is the best, but it's not my favorite. Too easy to just spam them and be okay.

Bandit Camp I have a soft spot for. Also Native Village.

Probably Fishing, I love Durations and FV is just so powerful.

But that's the boring answer, so instead I'll talk about Festival which I don't think people think about often enough when they think of good villages.  It's expensive for a village but it's also the only one that gives +$2.  And the fact that it's a non-terminal that gives +Buy is not insignificant.  It's a great enabler for powerful strategies like multi-Tac, Library/Watchtower, and Scrying Pool engines.  It combos nicely with Menagerie and Minion.  It's a good card, one that I used to underrate because it doesn't draw.  But if the kingdom also has a card that offsets that disadvantage (like the six I listed, and plenty others too), Festival can be very strong.

Fishing Village definitely.

The best for me, yes boring, but fantastic little workhorse.

I wish I could say Walled Village or something else, but alas no.

Fishing Village and Hamlet, I love powerful cheap villages. Also Crossroads if you like to call that a village.

Border Village and Worker's Village get honorable mentions.

Then Hamlet and Crossroads.

I love Worker's Village, Border Village, Farming Village and Fortress, in that order.

I absolutely hate Mining Village because of its ridiculous insecurity: after every play it needs to hear "no sweetheart, I do not intend to trash you" (but if you keep bugging me I'll eventually get tempted).

Worker's Village. Just Fishing Village and a terminal draw doens't make an engine. Fishing Village, Wandering Minstrel, Hamlet and Border Village are also up there.

Probably hamlet. FV is more powerful but there's so many fun things you can do with hamlet, and it's so easy to get a bunch of the little buggers.

I also kind of like Ruined Village for being the nastiest ruin to give opponents :P

I can't decide between Inn and Shanty Town, both of which are nontraditional and are fun to try and play, especially as the only village on an engine board.

There's too many to choose from! The more I play with Squire (a sometimes village) the more I love it. But right now, my favorites are Border Village and Hamlet.

Mining Village. I love the option value it provides.

Second place would be Border Village, I think. I like that even after you've used it's on gain ability and it's in you deck, it's still usually better than a regular Village because it costs $6 (so it's better for TFB).

Worker's Village. FV is too easy to rush, and +Buy in a Village should never be overlooked.

Someone earlier said Festival doesn't get enough love. The problem with Festival is that it usually competes with the $5s you need to make your engine work. And, because Festival is your Village, your engine can't come together at all until you get enough Festivals in the deck, which really slows your tempo.

Worker's Village... It's your plus action and buy wrapped up in one neat little package.  What more could an engine builder ask for?

I think the reason I like it best is that it is useful in all situations and is always better than a vanilla village.  This isn't always the case with other $2/3/4 villages and $5+ villages start to get expensive.  Fishing Village is no doubt very strong but in some games it is nothing more than a nerfed Merchant Ship.

Honorable Mention: Hamlet, Wandering Minstrel

After looking through the list, it turns out that I'm really not in love with any of the village cards. Walled Village is probably my favorite just because it's the only village I think is worth buying outside of an engine deck.

There are so many good villages. Even vanilla Village and Shanty Town are cool just because it costs $3. For me though, my favourite is a toss up between Worker's Village and Bandit Camp. Worker's Village gives +buy so I don't have to buy Market or something over Gold, and Bandit camp is like +2action/+1card/+3coins in a total draw deck. I also like Festival. Having Festival and draw-to-x cards line up is such a satisfying feeling.

My favorite is definitely Wandering Minstrel.  I just love dropping all the non-engine parts off the top of my deck so my Torturer can draw another Wandering Minstrel and Torturer reliably.  It's also definitely worth spamming, even if you don't have enough terminal draw for your engine yet.

Border Village comes in second.  It's so great getting two engine parts at once, and it works extremely well with trash for benefit.

Fortress. Maybe it'll wear off, but trash-for-benefit shenanigans have always been my favorite part of Dominion, and Fortress turns those up to 11.

Before DA, it was Fishing Village by a mile.

I'm surprised someone mentioned Native Village. Every time I try to build a Native Village megaturn deck I end up wanting to tear my eyes out as the NVs repeatedly throw more NVs onto the mat.

I just used Wandering Minstrel for sifting in a no trashing, heavy junking game (Young Witch into Mountebank). Surprisingly, I was able to build a powerful engine with Rabble, Mountebanks for cash, and Pawn for +Buy.

After looking through the list, it turns out that I'm really not in love with any of the village cards. Walled Village is probably my favorite just because it's the only village I think is worth buying outside of an engine deck.

I... sincerely hope you're joking.  I've always found Walled to be the worst Village.

Fishing and Border and definitely great, and I also have gotten quite fond of Squire.  It's also nice to get Trusty Steed, once Followers has been taken, of course.

Ruined says hello.
More seriously, you often want Steed before followers.

Actually answering the question, my favorite card which can be classified as a village is probably squire - which is quickly becoming one of my favorite cards. But my favorite village qua village is either Native or Worker's.

I'm not joking. The topic is, "What is your favorite village?" Not, "What is the best village?"

A single Walled Village lets you pick up a few more terminals in an otherwise Treasure-based deck. It's the village that works best in a non-engine deck. That makes it interesting to me.

Hamlet and Festival are my favorites.  They give you +Buy, and introduce interesting tradeoffs (lack of card for Festival, hand management/discarding for Hamlet) that are sometimes drawbacks but work beautifully in "draw to X" and Menagerie engines, which I'm particularly fond of.

I still think Bazaar is mightily underrated, too; and I'm quite fond of Farming Village's defensive capabilities, even though I know it's not objectively the best Village out there.

Dame Molly.

No seriously though... Necropolis gets an honorable mention for just how mind-twisting it is, but I like Border Village because it's the one that has highest potential for Shenanigans. It's the one that most changes how you build and play your deck, especially if it's the only village around and you want to build an engine.

It may not be optimal, but it's FUN to KC a Bishop with Fortress in hand, or Death Cart a Fortress, or Rats a Fortress, or . . .

Pretty sure KC->Bishop is usually the optimal play when you have a Fortress in hand.

Often? Could you elaborate? There are obvious situations where you don't want Followers at all, but I can't think of any common spot where you eventually want Followers, yet pick Steed first.

Typically thin-deck situations where you can pick up both in a turn, but I'm with you on this. Steed is good but unspectacular (a workhorse, heh). Followers isn't always good, but when it is, it's powerful.

Steed is spectacular when it's the only Village, but still good otherwise as well - you can use it for +$2/+2 Cards in those circumstances, which is very nice.  I don't think I've ever actually used the Silver shuffle.

If you think you'll be able to get both, either because you can do it in one turn, or because your opponent isn't going Tournaments or something, Steed is better to have for improving your deck a lot of the time. And there are times it's the only village and/or there is a good counter to the attacks of Followers, so it's actually more valueable overall than Followers. But in terms of how often these occur, I think it's infrequent (or unimportant) enough that taking Followers first always is still a decent rule of thumb.

I just played an IRL game last night where my first use of Trusty Steed was +$2 and gain 4 Silvers. The second use was +2 Actions/+$2, but only because I had a Library in hand.

I'm the rare beast that really likes Farming Village. Being guaranteed you'll draw a non-useless card, AND still getting through the junk. A sort-of counter to some deck-messers (Rabble, Fortune Teller, Sea Hag) while still being useful in the general case.

Trusty Steed is a better prize than Followers in engine games where Followers might just ruin your own deck.

And because I'm a huge fan of engine building, I almost always picked up Trusty Steed first when I had the chance.

Mine is Native Village.

It is wonky and definitely relies a little on chance.
But i also feels like it is one of the cards were playing it well may have a huge impact on your game (instead of just knowing when to buy it).

I had a 3p IRL game where it was the best enabler for Feoda. It worked out pretty nicely, since they didn't contest the Feoda, which gave me enough time to play the Steed enough to make the Feoda meaningful. That, and scads of silvers go a long way to buying Provinces.

The problem is that if they pick up Followers, it ruins your deck too, so you don't really avoid that by getting Steed first, assuming a somewhat similar strategy from your opponent. Usually when I pick up Steed first, it's because I'm ahead and don't think my opponent can actually get Followers.

Steed can be better when villages are at a premium, when curses are already flying, and pretty much any time that decent trashing is around in an engine and, more importantly, the discard attack isn't doing anything for you.

Also any time the opponent has reliable moat-ing, or sometimes watchtower, usually via scheme.

Followers is terminal and Steed gives +2 actions. I would gladly give up Followers if that means that I can keep my engine going and double-Province or something.

Also, if your opponent grabs Followers after you had the opportunity to, then your deck doesn't go bad as quickly because the Followers is played later.

Fishing village exemplifies the best parts about dominion. To be good, you have to learn principles, e.g., don't buy a billion terminals. And then to get better, you have to throw your principles away, because omg fishing village.

An Inn in hand is roughly as useful as a warehouse (less sifting power, more actions), but with a very useful on-gain ability.

If that is a trap, other cards with on-gain abilities like Border Village (as useful as a Village), IGG (usually worse than a silver) will all be traps.

I think Border Village is pretty up front with itself; pay a bit extra for that $5 card and it comes with a Village.  If anything, you are pleasantly surprised when you realize that the $6 cost pairs nicely with tfb.

Inn, on the other hand, looks a lot like Village.  But your handsize is not maintained.  You say it's like Warehouse, but Warehouse is also a bit of a trap to non experts.  Just look at the Goko bots.

No, when you put your entire deck into your discard pile, you don't gain golds from tunnels because they are not discarded, they are just put into the discard pile. You don't normally reveal any cards you discard, except for the one that is visible because it's the top card.

I play golem and reveal a smithy and a village. I play the smithy first, and draw a dead village. Can it trigger or not?

Yes, if you have no actions. Not, if you do. Assuming Golem is your first action and you have no previous duration, you wouldn't have actions before playing the Village, and thus, you could use the reaction.

Wouldn't it be easier to design it as an Action/treasure then that avoid any need for a wording:

Dead Village 4$
+1 Card
+2 Actions

I don't think that works.  If you're out of actions, you can't play it as an action.  If you've played a treasure, you can't play any more action cards that round and it doesn't do anything (other than draw the card, I suppose).

I feel like that was the goal of the discussion right design a village that cannot be draw dead.

Easiest solution is it is also a copper so if it's draw dead you can still play it as treasure to produce 1$

Quick shot at DXVing it:

Dead Village - $4
Action/Reaction

+1 Card
+2 Actions

It should be discard this from your hand, because otherwise couldn't you reveal it while in play?

You're right, I inadvertently used the language from Beggar rather than from Market Square. Fixed.
