GOKODOM: Rules and Regulations

The following rules govern Season III of GokoDom.

I. Tournament Structure

A. The tournament consists of a Swiss-style qualifier (the Swiss portion) and a three-round elimination tournament among the top eight players of the Swiss portion (the elimination rounds).

B. The number of rounds in the Swiss portion will depend on the number of players signed up.  For N players, ceil(log2(N)) rounds will be played.  (This is 6 rounds for 33-64, 7 rounds for 65-128, etc.)

C. Each round of the Swiss portion except the first and last will have a duration of just under one week, lasting from Monday near 1500 EDT to Monday near 0600 EDT.  The first round will start on Monday 10 February and last until the following Monday, 17 February.  The final round of the Swiss portion will last no longer than two weeks.  The elimination rounds will each last one week.

D. During the round, paired opponents must determine a mutually agreeable time to play their match.  If such a time cannot be determined, the players must send the TO a private message to this effect by the end of the round.

E. A player who knows in advance that s/he will be unavailable for the following round may send a PM to the TO by the end of the previous round, and receive a Bye by Request.  This privilege may not be used during the final Swiss round or the elimination rounds.  This Bye is equivalent to a Draw, not a Win.

II. Ordering and Pairing Rules

A. Initial seedings for the tournament will be random.  Each player is assigned color Red or Blue depending on their ownership of sets on Goko.

B. At the end of each round, each player will receive one of the following results:

1. A player who played a match and won receives a Win (W).
2. A player who played a match and lost receives a Loss (L).
3. A player who played a match and drew receives a Draw (D).
4. If the match was unplayed, a player who sends a PM to the TO, and whose opponent does not send a PM, receives a Win by Default (WD).
5. If the match was unplayed, and both players sent a PM to the TO, both receive a Draw by Default (DD, or Handshake).  (This result is not available in the last round of the Swiss portion.)
6. If the match was unplayed, and the player did not send a PM to the TO, the player receives a Loss by Default (LD).  This player is removed from the tournament.
7. If the player was assigned a Bye, that player receives a Win by Bye (WB).
8. If the player requests a Bye, that player receives a Bye by Request (BR).  (This result is not available in the last round of the Swiss portion.)

C. Results of W, WD, and WB are worth 2 match points.  Results of D, DD, and BR are worth 1 match point.  A result of L is worth 0 match points.

D. A result of DD adds one Default to a player's record.

E. During the Swiss portion, the ordering of players is determined by the following criteria, in order of precedence:

1. Total match points
2. Solkoff score, the sum of all opponents' total match points
3. Cumulative score, the sum of a player's total match points at the end of each round
4. Random
5. Requested Byes last and unpaired this round.

F. Once players are ordered, each player will be paired with the highest player in the ranking who fits the following criteria:

1. Has not yet been played
2. Has a match point score at most +-1 (after rounds 1 and 2), +-2 (after rounds 3 and 4), or +-3 (all other rounds).
3. Has the opposite color

G. If no player meets all three criteria in F, the highest player who meets only criteria 1 and 2 will be paired; otherwise the highest player who has not yet been played.

H. If an odd number of players are participating in the round, the last unpaired player on the list will receive a Bye in that round.

I. For purposes of calculations, several different virtual players must be added to the list of players.

1. A player who recieves a pure Bye receives a Win (WB) against a virtual player.  That player will start the virtual match with the same record as the player, lose this match, then draw every future virtual match; this is important for calculating Solkoff scores.
2. A player who receives an LD result becomes a virtual player.  That virtual player has his/her original score, loses the unplayed match, then draws every future match.  The paired player who got the WD is considered to have played this player.

III. Elimination Rankings

A. The top eight players from the Swiss portion move on to the elimination rounds.  Rankings for the elimination round are based on the following tiebreakers, in order

1. Total match points
2. Fewest defaults
3. Solkoff score, the sum of all opponents' total match points
4. Cumulative score, the sum of a player's total match points at the end of each round
5. Cumulative opponents' scores, a fun sum of sums of sums that we likely won't get to
6. If the players met each other at any time in the Swiss portion, use that result to rank the players
7. Coin flip

If the coin flip affects the order of ranks 8 and 9 (and would cause an elimination), that order may instead be determined by a match between those two players, presuming it can be completed ASAP.  If order matters only for seeding, a coin flip will be used.

B. These players will be seeded into the elimination rounds by rank for a three-round single-elimination tournament.

IV. Match Structure

A. Each match will involve a minimum of three games and a maximum of 6 games.  In order to eliminate first-player advantage as much as possible, the following rules will be used:

1. Let Goko randomly determine who has the first seat in the first game.  That player will sit in the second seat in games two and three.  If more games are needed, that player will sit in the first seat in games four and five, then again in the second seat in game six.  This is more easily represented as A-B-B-A-A-B.

2. Because Goko randomly assigns starting players, you may be required to reset games to get the correct start order for each game.  It is recommended that you play unrated games for this reason.

3. Winning a game awards 1 game point; drawing a game awards 0.5 game points to both players.

4. A player wins the match if after 3 or 4 games, s/he has 3 game points; or after 5 or 6 games s/he has 3.5 game points.  A 3-3 tie on game points is a tie for the match.

V. Miscellany

A. Virtual opponents

1. Virtual opponents are created any time a player receives a bye, or when a player is removed from the tournament.

2. A virtual opponent for a bye match has the same match points as the player at the start of the round.  The virtual opponent then loses (for an assigned bye) or draws (for a requested bye), then draws every further match.  The virtual opponent is generated only for the purpose of calculating Solkoff scores.

B. Dropouts

1. If you fail to appear for a match and do not PM the TO, you will be removed from the tournament (and will be asked to sit out the following season).
