Countering early scoring?

Disclaimer: I only started playing 3 days ago.

To my newbie-self, it seems like the "easiest" wins happen when one player starts scoring and gets early achievements, while the other player is focused on building up the board for end-game. If that second, build-up player, doesn't get at least one or two early achievements to block the first player, they're probably going to lose.

Metalworking and Clothing in particular enable the score-early strategy, as they cannot be ignored and forces the other player to either react or lose.

Some example games:

As a new player, what should I look out for if I want to try to execute a "build-up" strategy but don't want to get passed by early-scoring?

The easy answer is, you gotta score as well.

Against Clothing, block with leaves and/or building out to 5 colors.  Notice against PrincessYukon you keep letting her score two cards.  That's just too easy to win with.

Against Metalworking, match in castles, or draw out the piles quickly (e.g., shared Wheel).

It's OK if you let them get one or two; the real problem is if you let them keep scoring.  Metalworking/Clothing shouldn't get them to more than {1} or maybe {2}; Pottery or an unblocked Clothing can take them farther to {3} and {4}.  Then you start getting in trouble.

You made a big mistake on turn 11 in the first game.  You should have melded optics to stop huh from gunpowdering your reds.  Gunpowder is a very important card, especially when lower piles are run out and it scores 4's from the second part.

I didn't get that far.  I was upset by the early Code of Laws usage.

Sometimes you get games with you draw the same 2 colors for the first couple turns against a clothing player. But even then there are options (e.g. Map Making) to go after those scored 1's

Here is an example of some early scoring I did that I should have never been allowed to do. At minimum my opponent should have melded Masonry to prevent me from using Clothing to achieve Monument. I think my opponent was too focused on using Tools.
