Thematic cards

The cards spur our fantasy as to how the mechanic is related to the card's title. Gunpowder harks the end of fortifications as we knew them. But why does the fridge perish everyone else's stored food, and why is the stored food in hands once (refrigeration) and at other times in influence (canning)?

What's your favourite "why would a Smithy draw three cards" card metaphors?

I always assumed that the blacksmiths at the smithy were being productive, earning you more cards.  The theme is extra wonky in the early sets; originally base dominion took place in one castle.

The most ironic is Democracy, particularly if you don't share it  ;D

Well, not everyone is enfranchised, even in today's democracies.

In Innovation, all players are equal. But some players are more equal than others.

I like Metric System - first time around you set a standard (splay green cards), then after that you align everything else to that standard.

Metric System is fun to share if your opponent's green cards are splayed up :-)

I've never had the opportunity to do that.  Things are getting out of MS's league at that point..

It happened once before when I was two splays away from Wonder (Green and Purple (?) were unsplayed) and he was one splay away.  He had his green cards splayed right and crown advantage, so I certainly wasn't using Metric System.

Then he splayed his green cards up.  Now I can use Metric System: if he shares on the first one, I gain a card for sharing, cost him a upsplay, and don't use it again.  If he doesn't share, I use it again to steal Wonder.

I get it now: "splayed up" is "Imperial System"!

There seems to have been a similar discussion in BGO, and people have actually found an explanation to every card: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article/11197136

Chris Cieslik said that you can take the Agriculture card, fold it in half, and go dig in your garden out back.

That's flavor right there.

Clothing helps you score?  wat!

I am a sex with socks on kind of guy, but for the most part, less clothing -> more scoring.

Well, that's true for women, but for men, more clothing usually results in less clothing and more scoring later. I always wear just a tracksuit bottom and a t-shirt and my score pile's still empty.

When our long winter had a break last Sunday, my son and I sat down for a game on the balcony. Unfortunately the wind blew some cards over the railing into -- you guessed it -- our garden out back. We managed to recover all cards except banking. I blame Merkel.

I've aways found using Printing Press with Reformation as your top purple to be very historically accurate.

"Does the mathematics you do have any actual current real-world applications?"

"Well, no not really. In fact, it distracts us from other things we could be doing. But what we're doing now will have applications in the future! We're not quite sure what yet, but we'll know when we get there!"
