Ozle Google Maps Challenge 4
« on: March 26, 2013, 09:58:31 am »

It used to take a detective to find this country’s prime
Though not to discover the sweet spot to begin searching
Keeping the theme, find the nearby Queen who stored a lot of cake.
The picture awaits on the 12th

I think I get the end of this one...not sure about where to start though.

detective to find this country's prime...
sweet spot to begin searching

seem like the important bits for that.

Okay, I'm pretty sure I've figured out the last bit, but I'm trying to figure out the first half.

Wild guess here: Considering the latter clues strongly suggest a golf course near the palace of Versailles in France (More than likely the 12th hole of the Golf Des Yvelines, which was the first golf course in France), I'm guessing the "country's prime" refers to a king, probably King Louis the XIII, since 13 is a prime number. Additionally, Louis the XIII was the king in Alexander Dumas book "The Three Musketeers". The "detective" line could refer to the book's sequel "Man in the Iron Mask", wherein the titular man is a son of Louis the XIII, hidden in a prison.

"Sweet Spot" refers to a manner hitting a golf ball in just the perfect manner.

Anyway, my guesses.

"Sweet Spot" refers to a manner hitting a golf ball in just the perfect manner.

Anyway, my guesses.

Although cool, I think you might have the same misunderstanding as ashersky had.  The goal is not to solve the riddle and guess where the image is, the goal is to find the image in google maps.  Looking over the Golf Des Yvelines, I cannot find this image...thus it isn't the correct answer (or I just didn't find it, which is possible)

However, this is a golf course, and likely the 12th is intended to guide us to that.  (I don't know how golf courses are laid out, maybe 12th will direct us to the very image for someone who knows it).

It appears to me that gold courses look the same the world over, so I think we really need to solve the first bit to get anywhere.

It used to take a detective to find this country's prime.

My wife suggested that it could be the prime minister.
A google search for Prime Minister Watson turned up Australia.  But I don't see any "sweet spot"s there.  And a search for antionette didn't turn up anything useful.  Any other ideas?

I assume the "queen who stored a lot of cake" is Marie Antoinette, and so likely we're looking for something named after her.  i.e. antoinette street or some such thing...but probably something less specific.  i.e. in the right area maybe a maryborough, or some such would get us close enough (although it doesn't appear to be the maryborough golf course in Australia).

I think you might be onto something with fictional detectives, but I don't think it's Sherlock. However, there is a Poirot story called "The Kidnapped Prime Minister" wherein Poirot has to find the British Prime Minister, who has been kidnapped on his way to a secret conference in Versailles. So, we have Poirot=Belgian. Prime Minister=British. Versailles=French. Judging by the wording of the first line, I'm going with Britain.

So, assuming Britain is the country, we have to figure out the sweet spot associated with it...maybe something related to Cadbury? There's a Cadbury world in Birmingham...

There's also York, home of Nestle and historical home of Rowntrees, Cravens and Terry's. Also Kendal, famous for it's mint cakes. I've had a brief look in all three places and can't find it, but might be worth checking out. What other "sweet spots" are there in GB?

I think once we know what the sweet spot is the solution will be much easier.
The question is if this a literal sweet spot like the factory of famous candies (Charlie's Chocolate Factory) or if this is something else.
Maybe the sweet spot is a direct reference to the Prime.

The only Primes I found which could make sense in connection with a detective are:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geoffrey_Prime
and the term "Prime Suspect"

The detective is what sent me in the right direction in combination with "prime".

Yay!

A hint for you guys: Don't take the "prime" part literally, take it figuratively.

This one got solved quickly!

Davio is right, prime is not a prime number, or a person. It is linked to a place...

Well, the trick with all of these challenges is to start from the right location and then it all falls into place pretty well.
Of course you only know it's right when you actually find it.

What I'm trying to say is: You can get stuck pretty easily and never find it if you start with a wrong idea. This is because there's so much info on the internet that one thing will lead to another and you might think you're on the right track, but it's actually a dead end. Like many cryptographic puzzles you'll either get it instantly or not at all.

If you're stuck, don't keep spending time on dead ends, come back another time with a fresh look.

Well, what kind of city or town would be considered a country's prime?
But also the used to part is important. Like how certain places were something before and now they're not anymore.

I got the prime part, but it's the "used to take a detective" that's throwing me.

This country's previous prime is the same as a famous (tv) detective.

ahhhhh, that's the problem; my detective knowledge was too limited.  Now I'm on the right path at least.
