I guess this means we're searching for an older word than cop. Copper?

Edit: I'm looking at Copper Mountain, Colorado but I don't think this is correct because "Coast" doesn't really make sense there.

But thats missing the importance of the 'a'....

'a cop went' around

2 questions:

1) can we not get spoiler tagged solutions once solved?  It's killing my enthusiasm to try when we work on this as a team but only one person gets to revel in the knowledge.

2) am I wrong in assuming all of these are solvable without using Google/Google Maps?  I've been assuming these are solvable riddles...

They are Google Map challenges...

Right, the picture comes from Google Maps.  But that's all, I thought.  Like, it's a picture of something we should be able to figure out without zooming in on a random spot on the Earth, right?  That's what I meant.  We should be able to know the location of the picture without going to the place on the map.

Like, start at the Empire State Building, go inland until you hid X River, south to the second state line, then east until the place of kings, and end up at Throneroom, Virginia.

If you have satellite images of the whole Earth stored in your memory, sure. Otherwise, it's a challenge that you solve by finding a specific place on Google Maps using a few cryptic clues.

Its like a treasure hunt, usually the first few clues give you the right area of the world, middle lines narrow it down
and then last line tells you exactly where to look for the picture.

sometimes you can skip a step and possibly brute force an answer though.

I can give you the solutions to anyone who wants them, no need to put them in threads.

I'm fine with the posting of spoilered solutions once solved...I'm not sure everyone is?

Of course, now that you know how this works, you might feel differently?  I dunno.
Maybe if no one has any objections we could post a spoiler of more and more specific hints leading to a solution.

Id rather its not spelt out for anyone directly in the thread, spoiler or not, and really it would be nice if all hints and clues were in spoilers, but meh...i just make these in my lunchbreak on a whim and they will only last as long as I can keep thinking up interesting ones!

Also, not sure what more clues I could give to this one without deliberately SPELLING it out.

You have 'a cop went' around, once you work out what that means the rest is pretty simples. And to give any more clues on that one would be just akin to telling the answer. its not as complicated as it sounds.

Since you've been going on about it, I think I've figured out that clue.  But I am too lazy/busy to actually walk up the coast and all that. :P

By specific "hints" I just meant solutions to the various parts.  i.e. what the first line means, second line, etc.

Yes, it's essentially the same as giving the full answer, but it lets people work out the later bits instead of just receiving a map location and trying to reverse understand the clue.

OK.... I like doing these things co-operatively but I'm going to post the progress I've made as a spoiler in case anyone wants to do it all by themselves.

Ozle says it is easy once you've worked out the first part but I've worked out the first two bits and I still haven't found the actual location.

The answer to the first line is an anagram of "a cop went"

Which is to say Capetown

I assume the first part of the line is some reference to Table Mountain but I don't really understand what.

Following up the coast we come to Grotto Bay

That is as far as I've got so far....

There is a Wellington if you go straight inland.

Well, I was right about the twist. Thanks for working out the hard bits, guys. (At least I knew we were looking for a Wellington).

Oh yeah. Wellington is blindingly obvious now you point it out to me. I somehow still haven't managed to find the actual spot on the map though....

Oh, and who knew South Africa grew so much wine? Not me, obviously.
