Ozle Google Maps Challenge 1
« on: March 19, 2013, 07:00:35 pm »

I was going to post this over in the Treasure Hunt Forum, but then I figured it would be good here, and then if people want more they can join the Hunt forum.

The trick is simple.
Find the picture below in google maps and PM me where you think it is.

There is a cryptic clue to help you on your way.

Find the river where two countries almost form a line
Dance your way to the end
When there, lend a hand to a small childrens bear
who is all confused due to missing his hot beverage

Okay, so for two countries forming a line I've got http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durand_Line. Can't make sense of anything else though I can't find the answer based on just that. It's probably wrong. Anyone got anything else?

Okay, on deciphering the cryptic clue:

A small childrens bear may refer to teddy (bear).
Missing his hot beverage would mean missing his t(ea), so eddy
And confused may mean an anagram, but an anagram of eddy or "lend a -hand-" + eddy?

And here I was looking through http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fictional_bears for a character who's stories revolved around hot drinks...

(and finding nothing)

I was about to jump in then with AHA! Panda's are not actually bears!

Then I realised I was thinking of Koala's...

Line is an anagram of Nile. I don't know why but I feel more confident about this than any of my other ideas. Also, the photo does look a bit desert-y, so I wouldn't be surprised if it were in Egypt. Haven't found it yet though.

Hopefully you will need all of the clues to work it out, none of the 4 lines have any words in them by chance

I've invested enough time in searching random airports already. There can't be too many left. Right?

My idea was that the river was the Niger, because it crosses the border from maLI to NIger. Neither bear nor that airport at it's end though :(

we seem to be ignoring "Dance your way to the end"...I think that's probably important.  Why dance?

One possibility (though I can't think what it might mean, or if it's in any way reasonable) is that if you ignore the line break you get:
Find the river where two countries almost form a line dance

In case it helps, that was the bit that got th "slight update". Previously the second line said something like "Go down to the end". It definitely didn't say "dance" before, and I'm 90% confident the word "down" was in there.

That means it's probably not a line dance.
It might just refer to the river not going in a straight line
