How does this beat me? What else can I sensibly do on such a weak board?

steward+ trash down to exactly 9$ left (probably steward,1 silver, 5 copper), and buy a tactician = early platinum.  Then buy up platinum as you trash your copper. But his strategy might seem weird it is basically a modified "double-tact" which is pretty good, as you can see it nets him early palitum at which point he transitions out double tact.

This board doesn't look all that weak to me, although whether the Vineyards strategy only works better in theory than it does in practice is a good question: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201303/13/game-20130313-153722-b3b9984e.html

I definitely could have done this better; I suspect that one would need to get more villages so that it's possible to transition from Watchtower for draw early to mid-game to Steward for draw late-game. If Mining Village were a vanilla Village (or FV or even ST) instead, this strategy would be much more powerful.
