Amusing Cracked article about bad board games.

http://www.cracked.com/blog/6-board-games-that-ruined-it-everyone/

Naturally, Monopoly shows up at #1. I suspect it's not because it's the worst game (I'd argue for Chutes and Ladders or Candyland) but because it's the most popular of not-good games. Though, the author is off base by saying that it's based entirely on luck. Negotiating is a major skill in it.

Though, I can't argue with the suggested alternative for Monopoly, except that it's not exactly a light game for most families.

Bonus points for this quote, though: Risk is worse for family game night than incest.

Wasn't Smallworld better suggestion for Risk?

Connect four is actually OK. I don't know what The Game of Life is.

Connect Four has been solved by computers, though. It's a win for Player 1 starting in column 4, or a draw if Player 1 starts anywhere else.

Just don't play it against a computer. I think the solution is complicated enough so humans can't implement it.

Here's the report of the guy who wrote the program showing that Connect Four is solved; it's an interesting read.

I stopped reading at "The Game is Solved: White Wins". Everybody knows there is no white in Connect 4.

I don't know what The Game of Life is.

Life has slightly more options than Candyland (never actually played Candyland, but I understand it's pretty linear).

As the article says, you start off with the illusion of choice when you choose your career path. Basically, the space you land on during your career choice sets your salary so that every payday you pass by, you get your salary. It uses a spinner to move you 1 to 10 spaces. If you go into debt, you can take loans. There's another choice you can make: whether you pay off the loans. There are spaces along the way that trigger interest payments. If I recall, the path periodically splits so that you have some choice, but then the paths merge, and you're back to the railroad.

It really was just a matter of, "Something happens. Gain money or lose money."

I like the unofficial Game of Real Life. You roll a d6 to move. If your first roll is a 1, then you're aborted and have to start again next turn. The rest of the spaces were pretty much just as non-PC.

Yeah, I feel like a lot of the urban professionals I know around here (I live in Cambridge, Mass., so it's not representative of the U.S. really) have all rediscovered games due to Settlers -- and it's true, I never thought of them when I was 20, 21, because ever game I knew about was either Monopoly, Risk, or some insanely complicated war gamer deal.

What's with Snakes and Ladders?

When I was a kid, I had Chutes and Ladders.  Is that the same thing?

Yes, except Snakes and Ladders is the proper name before the 'oooohh lets not scare children with snakes' police came in!

Chutes and Ladders is its name only in America I believe.

You don't really need to be older than 10 to exert a lot of advantage using first player advantage in Connect Four.  You might not actually be checkmating per se, but decent Connect Four players either win or draw going first, never losing.  That's kinda dull.
