Combo: Courtyard/Tournament

This combo works well on three levels.  To begin with, a dedicated CY/BMU early game generally can produce an early Province or two, which is all-important in a Tournament match.  Secondly, once the Province has been added and a Tournament bought, it becomes easier to match them up because of the return one card rule of CY.  The third reason these cards work really well together is that you can chain Provinces over turns to keep your opponent from being able to use his tournaments.  This can utterly destroy their tempo in the end game.

Note that with any CY strategy it is okay, sometimes much better, to add multiple CYs.  They stack pretty well because if two are drawn in a hand one can be saved for the next turn.  You can actually set up a cheap and fast engine this way.  It is inferior to Masquerade and will get beat on some boards but it really isn't a bad way to rush.

I can see exactly what you mean with your combination and how it could work. Seeing how courtyards can plant provinces to block tournaments though, doesn't it suggest using courtyards with quick income cards and skipping tournaments entirely?

Well, if you've gone Courtyard and are 1 or 2 Provinces up on your opponent, why not get a Tournament with a less-than-$6 hand?  Prizes are good, right?  You can go Followers, and solidify your lead.  Or just get some Duchies in case your opponent catches up a little.

If your opponent is also pursuing a Courtyard/BM strategy, and is either even with you or close behind, I agree, no Tournaments, because they can probably make your Tournaments not-very-useful.

Yes, this is a strategy that should take into account the opponent's buys.  When I played this setup this morning my opponent over-committed to Tournament, and despite his gaining all the good prizes it really wasn't a contest.  On the other hand, in a mirror match it would surely be folly to buy Tournament as your opponent can certainly contain you as easily as you can him; these kinds of decisions are the kind that separate good players from bad.  We all deal with shuffle luck and position disadvantages.  The way to circumvent them is to play a tighter game by making good decisions about which cards to buy and how to play them.
