Favorite Disney Animated Movie

Admit it, you all have one.  What's your favorite Disney animated movie, and why?

Personally, I love Hunchback of Notre Dame, for the music, the visuals, and Frollo is such a great villain.  I also have a soft spot for The Black Cauldron.

Disney gets a bad rap sometimes, but I still love their animated movies.

On the whole, Beauty and the Beast is my favorite.  Gaston is a great villain, the songs are wonderful, Belle is one of the best Disney leads.  I love the contrasting that goes on between Gaston and Beast; it gives the film more depth than Disney was usually known for.  Also, it's just a really entertaining movie and it's short enough that it doesn't drag.

Hunchback is my choice for second place, for reasons you mentioned.  I would say it's number one, but the Gargoyles drag it down a lot (I know it's a cliche reason, but they just do: they exist only for marketing purposes and completely distract from the film's tone).  The "Hellfire" sequence is perhaps the greatest moment in a Disney film?  Well, maybe not, but it's close.

Third place is a little sketchier.  Lady and the Tramp?  Yeah, I'll just go with it.

As far as "fun" Disney movies go, I like Aladdin, Tangled, and Wreck-It Ralph about equally.  I don't think they reach the heights of the above two.  I'm not a huge fan of Disney movies pre-90s, but they are for the most part at least above average quality.

Sleeping Beauty.

The music, the animation style, and the villain are all favorites among my Disney collection. I am a pretty avid Disney fan, so there is quite a bit of competition.

Honorable mentions go to: Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Lion King, and Tangled.

Other notables: Fantasia, Rescuers, Lady and the Tramp, and Robin Hood.

(I'm sure I've forgotten a few... it's late and I don't feel like getting up and checking to see what else I own. :p )

The Lion King

I loved it so much that when I was a little kid I watched it so many times that the VCR tape broke! We also watched the funny sequels at least 20 times each. :p

Emperor's New Groove. Because it is the anti-thesis of Disney, yet still produced by Disney.

I love Kronk's (patrick warburton) voice. Yzma (Eartha Kitt) is a wonderful villan. And John Goodman and David Spade play off each other really well as the Pacha and the Emperor.

I can stand behind this. That and Lion King can fight for first place.

I liked them all as a kid, I haven't seen Dumbo and Hunchback since, that might boost it's rating.
Nobody mentioned Peter Pan yet? I like it pretty much, too.

@wero - I also have a soft spot for Black Cauldron.

#1 has to be The Little Mermaid. It has everything you want in a Disney movie: Lots of GREAT musical numbers, lovable characters, good comic relief, a scary villain, lots of bright colors...
#2 for me is Lion King, and it's really close. The comedy is even better, and the score is right up there.
#3 is Aladdin, but the drop off is bigger.
Then probably Cinderella and Hunchback.

Unfortunately, Nightmare Before Christmas is not considered animated for the purposes of Disney Animation Studios.

And I feel sad that I forgot about Little Mermaid. That was my dad's favorite.

Dumbo does get away with a lot of "questionable" race portrayals, especially with the crows.

When I was a kid, Robin Hood and The Lion King were probably my favorites. Now I'd say Beauty and the Beast--the fact that I was part of my high school's production of it probably helps :P

My high school decided to do Beauty and the Beast the year after I left, SO DISAPPOINTING!

IMO, Bell is the best female protagonist Disney has created.

1.)  She loves to read
2.)  She cares about her family very much
3.)  She looks past outward appearance to the person within
4.)  She attractive

Or if it's traditional animation only, probably Lion King.

1941, man.

The kid torn from his Mom?  Heart wrenching.  The mouse trying to do what he can to help?

Everyone here seems to be into the expensive Elton Johnish stuff.  The Lion King is Disney's animated Titanic.  I prefer the old, imperfect films.  Lady and the Tramp is another great one.  Pinocchio!

I think The Sword in the Stone is my fav to re-watch.

As a kid, my favourite was the Lion King, by a wide margin.

Although for me, the villain made the movie, so I also really enjoyed Hunchback of Notre Dame (fantastic music by the way), Aladdin and Hercules (Hades was and still is my favourite villain, though now Dr. Facilier comes close).

Favorites in order:

1. Beauty and the Beast
2. Pinocchio
3. Lilo and Stitch
4. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
5. The Little Mermaid

Beauty and the Beast has it all: good songs, an appealing heroine, a nasty but understandable villain. Pinocchio is the best of the classic period, including some of Disney's best songs. Lilo and Stitch is an underrated modern treasure. Snow White gets props as the one that started it all, and The Little Mermaid rounds out my selection.

I'm only considering traditional drawn animation here, so The Nightmare Before Christmas and anything by Pixar is disqualified. Favorite Pixar movie would be a great thread.

My friend's daughter (2 years old or so) is obsessed with The Aristocrats. Probably one of those kid obsessions that lasts a month and vanishes.

I don't think I even liked it when I was a kid.

Emperor's New Groove is up there for me. If they count, then virtually everything Pixar's ever made is a favorite. Mulan and Aladdin are terrific, Tarzan, Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid. Hercules is awesome and maybe one of their more underrated movies. I loved 101 Dalmations and Pinocchio as a kid but I haven't seen them in forever. I'm a total heathen though because I haven't seen Lion King since I was really really young and I don't really remember it, I am going to right this wrong very soon though.

Interestingly, a couple of my (grown-up) friends actually like Aristocats a lot. And I definitely need to watch Wreck-It Ralph!

We could do a poll if it were limited.  How about - for the next 24 hours, you can nominate one Disney animated movie.  At the end of 24 hours, I put the nominees up in a poll.  Savvy?

Wreck-It Ralph was released today.

I am sad that the DVDs no longer come with bonus features.  I guess the studios really want us to switch to Blu-Ray...

Having only done a quick search through the thread, it doesn't appear as if there's an official answer as to whether or not Pixar movies count.

If they do: Can't decide between Up, Toy Story 3, and Aladdin.

If they don't: You should be able to figure this out based on my previous answer.

I feel like any and all Pixar movies would just win. I know I'd vote for them over just about anything. *listens to Finding Nemo soundtrack*

Pixar doesn't count.

Although, a separate poll asking about favorite Pixar movies would be pretty great too. In fact, I'm gonna go set that up...

Also, I'm nominating Hunchback of Notre Dame.

As a child, it was hands down The Little Mermaid. I begged my parents to buy me sheets for my bed with LM designs. (I was quite young at the time).

I also loved Lady and the Tramp, as well as The Rescuers (not so much Down Under).

When I was a little older, my favorite was Mulan (still is quite high).

These days, well, I love the songs from Beauty and the Beast more than any other. The character development is more multi-dimensional there than almost any other story.

I did not like Hunchback at all, nor any of the Aladdin movies, I couldn't stand Hercules, nor The Emporer's new Groove. And I especially despised Lilo and Stitch.

Wreck-it-Ralph was surprisingly good, and one that I'm sure I'll watch again... But as a movie and as a story... It doesn't really hold up to some of the earlier Disney pieces.

Mulan is good.  Have you seen the more recent live action Chinese film?

There's a more recent one?  I watched parts of a live action Mulan series many years ago when I was a kid, before Disney ever got a hold of it.

I put up a poll just including all the movies mentioned so far.  You can choose up to 3.

Finally watched Wreck-It Ralph. I'm sad I missed it in theaters around my birthday. Maybe I'll take it to work this week and watch it after closing. It was very good. :)
