Also need some terminology help
« on: February 15, 2013, 08:33:07 pm »

Saw Ozle's thread and inspired me to make my own.

Game is called 'Witches of Salem'. Almost complete with the game, but to touch it up I need other names for Witches (Necromancer, Warlock, Mage, etc) and names for Weapons (Dagger, Torch, etc.). The catch with the weapons is, they A) Have to be relevant to the time period and B) Have to be varying levels of apparent strength (Ex: Dagger > Spear). Witches just have to be a Witch in some way (as you can see below, some are loosely based on Witches)

Current names for Witches (though I guess technically they aren't all 'Witches' specifically) :

Apprentice
Necromancer
Potion Maker
Wizard
Warlock
Sorcerer
Mage
Spellcaster
Druid
Magician

Current names for Weapons:

Weaker:
Torch

Weak:
Spear
Scimitar (I know, pushing the flavor a bit. That's why I need new names!)

Decent:
Dagger
Cleaver

Strong:
Axe
Sword (...pushing flavor)

Stronger:
Mace

--

Thanks!

Pitchfork is really good, can't believe I forgot about that one.

Hag and Enchantress sound good too. I'll probably swap out Mage for one of the 2. Possibly Druid too. Neither of those are really on-theme.

For weapons, think about the old household items...hammers, knives, chains, whips, rope/noose...

Dagger is stronger than Spear?  I'd expect Spear to be better.

Witches:

sorceress
illusionist
medium
seer
enchanter
shaman
thaumaturge
adept

Weapons:

bow and arrow?
specific types of swords...
pike
poison
club
stave

It's stronger for mechanics reason. Just picture a blunt spear instead.

Club sounds good. I'll probably swap it out for Torch. Not Bow and Arrow, I failed to mention that all the weapons are for hand-to-hand combat.

You could add adjectives. Dull Blade, Poisoned Dagger, Rusty Sword, Chopped Axe. And I liked the earlier suggestion of using household items. Butcher Knife, Frying Pan, Rolling Pin.

Err, that was "Chipped Axe".  Auto-correct!

Anything from Diablo II will do and I've seen some already.

Others: Halberd, Scythe, Morning Star?
Ranged weapons? Bow and Crossbow?

Are the witches carrying weapons? Otherwise it's rather odd to see a witch going at it with an axe.
In that case you should introduce the Shillelagh, just because it's such a beautiful word. :)

I was going to suggest shillelagh. I was beaten to the punch.

Someone also beat me to the punch for scythe, but at least I can suggest sickle. In fact, I would say that sickle is more likely to be used, because a scythe is a huge freaking weapon. But it is a terrifying weapon and belongs high on the list, while sickle would be more along the lines of a dagger.

And I would say that blunt spear is a staff, because most gamers won't abide by a spear being weaker than a dagger.

+1 for cudgel, though. That did not cross my mind, but it's a fitting word to use.

Did anyone say axe?  Because, axe.

Also, hatchet.  Tomahawk could work around Salem times.
