I've played it a bit, I didn't like it but I'm almost certain that it was because I'm not good at it.  If I tried harder I'm sure I would like it.

I used to play it a lot, and I was taught it at my public library. I still have my old Go set. :)

I love Go.  And I'm terrible at it.

I mean, I'm better than people that played twice with their friends in college or whatever, but old men that sit around playing with it have to give me a pretty substantial handicap.  Fortunately, Go is easy to handicap!

I played a lot of Go for a couple years, although I'm pretty rusty now. I think it's like the best game ever.

Maybe we could play online if anyone's interested?

I won! The British Go Association is hosting the game record as an SGF. The next game will be this Saturday at the same time.

I'm no expert at game play, but I was a bit of a Go nerd for awhile.  I think the sheer "meh" ness of Morgrim's post, from receiving such an honored game as a random Christmas present and then calling it "not so bad" as opposed to "the most amazing game every created" or "so difficult I hate it" seemed really funny.

When you think about Kawabata's novel or even Hikaru no go, the seriousness with which Go players and enthusiasts take themselves is apparent.  So Morgrim's shrug post was funny to me.

It's like getting a chess set as a present and saying "Meh, I guess it's kind of interesting."

I have played Go, but I'm not that good at it. It's interesting in it's simplicity, which I like. The more you get with the least rules is the ideal.

The self-seriousness does not translate to self-aggravation though. Most Go players have a humble opinion of their playing strength and are aware that they are far from hitting the ceiling. There is some condescending behaviour towards other games, namely Chess. But overall I have found the Go player an accomodating bunch, more than Chess players.
