Any interest in Isotropic tournaments?
« on: September 15, 2011, 09:51:36 pm »

I am considering setting up a 16-man bracket style tourney.  I am also open to suggestion about the format, but initially my idea is best of five or nine matches, seeded by rank.  Each round the competing players would have a week to set up and play their matches, and a thread will be opened for the posting of game logs and discussion.

I feel that if there are to be real competitive Dominion tourneys it is going to have to start with us, using the great tools we have available.

Sounds like a good idea. I'll take part if we can get the numbers.

There's a problem that if you play 4 hours each week of Dominion online it might seem like a lot. Unfortunately there are 24x7 hours available and you're probably not going to be on at the same time as someone else who plays 4 hours a week. This is especially true if you're in the US and your opponent is in Latvia. Finding any opponent in a competition can be difficult but finding a specific opponent can be harder.

Surely after discussion, any two people can find a time when they can both make themselves available.

I would say that if you are unwilling or unable to make a commitment to find and play your opponent, then do not sign up.  I am not looking for reasons why this wouldn't work, but rather for some other people who are willing to make it work.

I'm interested. I'm not that good, but I'm interested. I would suggest each round is best of 3, to avoid freak victories.

Sure, I'd be happy to join. I don't expect to win, but maybe I can eke out a round or something :)

And it shouldn't be that hard to find a time when both people are available, given a whole week. It's not like you're going to be waiting for the two of you to just happen to be online at the same time, set it up in advance.

I'm in the US, on Pacific time.

How does best of 3 avoid freak victories better than the originally-suggested best of five or nine?

Online meet and play tournaments never work out.  Or, that's what someone said after a similar game failed to have a tournament in this format.  In my experience it's been true too.

I'm more interested in meet-and-play than "everyone come online at this day at this time no matter what time it is in your timezone and do nothing buy play on a computer for 4 hours so we can do a tournament".

Having said that, I'll wait until a few more details have been sorted before I fully commit to this.

Tournaments seem to work well on BSW. The current BSW Dominion Cup 2011 has 160 participants. The better community and messaging features and the fact that most BSW-players live in central Europe, makes it easier, but I don't see why an online tournament should not work on isotropic.

So count me in.
