Here's a thought that popped into my head:

Unlike Loan, which can trash cards from your deck, how about setting them aside?
You know, saving them.

Savings - $5
Treasure

Worth $1 per card on your Savings mat
---------------
When you gain this, reveal the top three cards from your deck.
If you revealed any Treasure cards, set one of them aside on your Savings mat.
Discard the other revealed cards.
Return the set aside cards to your deck at the end of the game.

So the first time you buy it, it's a Copper, the second time it's a Silver and the third time a Gold etc.
The fifth time is a Platinum, pretty sweet!

What do you guys think? Should it cost $6? The "removing the treasure from your deck" part can be pretty good unless you reveal say a single Platinum or no Treasure cards at all.

It's like pirate shipping yourself, but for both money and a stronger attack.

Edit:  Oh, the "attack" is only on-gain.

Yeah, self Pirate Shipping was the idea, but I thought it would be too strong if you could do it when you play it. So I changed it to on-gain.

This card is waaaay to powerful. Thinking about it, it would dominate just about every other strategy besides a savings rush. When you buy one its like getting a copper, no big deal. But when you hit your fifth one, its like having 5 (5!) platinums in your deck. That's absurd. It also trashes out coppers from your deck!

Pirate ship is more balanced because it's an action, not a treasure. Meaning you can only play one a turn without support. This might be balanced at 7 or 8, but definitely not at 5. The card scales in power as you buy it exponentially, so priced at 7 it sort of looks like a bank in power.

On second thought, the paragraph below is not entirely true, as seen in the bottom paragraph.

This card simply does not work in non-colony games. As shown by destierro, a savings rush on a province board with overcome most other strategies. Now, you could price it at seven or eight, but if your going to buy 4-5 savings at that price, you could probably buy 4-5 provinces instead without too much difficulty.
It has the same problem as the perennial worth 1 vp per copy of this card in your deck fan card.

Actually, thinking it over, $6 might be a workable price, but even then, engines will nearly always prefer savings to gold, and big money would probably find gold better in most circumstances. It wouldn't be all that exciting, but it could probably work. Actually, wait, engines might draw no treasure; that makes it more interesting. Definitely $6.

What about "Worth $1 for each differently named card ..."? It would probably still be $6 since it would get close to Gold-with-a-benefit, much as I can see the appeal of having a small chance of opening with it.

What about changing it to put a treasure card in hand on the mat when you gain a Savings?

This would make it a bit harder to buy (it's essentially a $6 card then), but on the other hand you would be able to get rid of copper without the danger of losing a silver, gold or even other Savings.

The other possibility is, similar to CanMan's proposal, to count only differently named treasures, which would be a sort-of Forager treasure tracked only for yourself.

Yes, this is strong, but people are forgetting about the tempo that you are losing to get Savings to be worth 3 or more. After buying the first one, your deck hasn't improved at all and you are forgoing a $5 (or probably a $6 in the final version). The second one turns the first into a silver, etc. In comparison, Counterfiet is always awesome, making $2 and a buy immediately and eventually making $3 or $4.

This card is pretty strong for $5. A quick investment in this card can get you Platinums early, and its worth continues to increase. $6 seems balanced.

$5 with the treasure trashing from hand seems right. It's similar to a cost increase, makes the card less random and works thematically.

I like the treasure trashing from hand, it makes this a psuedo $6. Once it is worth at least +$3, you can buy it for $5 without increasing its value. Also, you can buy it for $7 to trash a silver if your hand don't have copper.
