This set I had more or less the same strategy as my opponent, but I bought two Potions while my opponent only bought one.  Other differences was my opponent getting 5 coins early for the Apprentice, while I kept getting stuck at 4.  I got totally killed.  What should I have done differently?

You only need 1 potion, I don't believe the second one helps you much if at all.

Perhaps the second potion makes sense eventually, but turn 4 seems early to get your second one. Maybe you don't want a lot of silver flying around but I'd prefer to get a bit of money and then potentially Forge/Apprentice it away later.
