Years ago, I remember playing a game online that, for some reason, filtered the word mountain as explicit text.

The game I'm playing now, Guild Wars 2, filters out Sega.  Not sure if it's a Korean swear word or if they're just anxious about competition in the game industry.  Nintendo is fine.

My favorite censorship of all time... For those of you Big Lebowski fans (I know at least Davio is!), you should all know the line "This is what happens when you fuck a stranger in the ass!"

When I saw the movie on Comedy Central?

"This is what happens when you find a stranger in the alps!"

I think that's a lot of people's favorite censorship of all time.

"I have had it with these monkey-fighting snakes on this Monday-to-Friday plane!" -Samuel Jackson

This was the actual TV version of the line.

I'm surprised Samuel L didn't grab Tarantino, go to the studio, and just f**k every foley editor's s**t up over that one.

A clbuttic mistake.  Also known as the Scunthorpe problem.  My favorite are news articles about buttbuttination.

To be fair, have you ever seen Scunthorpe? It really should be blocked
Heh. (I was born there, you know.)

New one I found:

"Crap" is censored. Which kinda makes sense. Until you realise it's used quite happily as a swear word (as in "Oh crap, he's coming for you" is IIRC the exact wording) in one of the Adventure stories (DA Act 3 game 4).

Just... what?

But not strictly better, because the spinoff can have a different cost than the expansion.

New Rule: Words that aren't censored on television should not be censored in internet games.  Neither harassment nor cursing is a subset of the other.

Tricky.
Words banned in one country are allowed in another.
Completely different rules for each country could be tricky.

And in England we have a watershed time where more violence and bad words are allowed.

i played a game against Qvist recently, and chatted in german. there we notice that the word "jap" was censored. Yep, Yap, jep, jap,..... are terms to say "yes" in a more laid back fashion in german. So we were quite surprise to have this censored.

Is it possible that "jap" is considered explicit language in english. Maybe some sort of snidly denomination for Japanese. i really cant think of anything else

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=jap maybe?

But I agree that it will be incredible difficult to get some curse filter that also filters slang and works in multiple languages without knowing which language it is filtering at the moment.

Please note that some of the more... "obscure" terms on urban dictionary are completely invented, and not actually used by anyone other than the author..

I intended my rule to be as permissive as possible.  Word not banned on TV in the UK?  Don't censor it on the Internet.  Not banned in Norway, or Paraguay, or Azerbaijan?  Don't censor it on the Internet.

(Yes, this means cursing probably wouldn't be censored at all.  That's fine by me.)

Taboo word censorship is a tricky issue. The thing is, we have taboo words because it's good to have them. They have value. This is so true that they are wired differently in our brains - you can have a brain injury that leaves you unable to talk, but still able to swear.

But taboo words are only taboo... if you don't say them. Saying them makes them lose their value.

For Goko I would be surprised if they hand-picked what words to censor - I am betting they had some 3rd party list of words, or censorship option they just turned on.
