****! (The Censorship Thread)

So, werothegreat and I were playing some Rebuild/Saboteur games just now, and I noticed that by censoring very mild 'swear' words, Goko makes me sound like a real foul-mouthed motherf****r.

During the game, it censored me when I cursed my mistakes by saying, "Crap!" That surprised me a bit, but it's understandable. But after our last game, by way of parting I said, "Well, I gotta ******. Hopefully we can continue this later." 10 points if you can guess which fairly innocuous word was censored. Wero, don't give away the answer!  :D

I wanted to ask someone else "age/sex/location", and it censored "sex."  It doesn't, however, censor "coitus."

Doesn't sound that bad to me.

I love their censor. I am always surprised by the words it blocks, and then I'm confused and it makes me look like I am saying worse things than I am. lol

Ha, nice. It was a six-letter word, though.

At first I thought it was censored because of its connection to bodily processes, but after consulting Urban Dictionary, I discovered it can also be used as a term for a certain ethnic demographic. I feel a bit like Randal in Clerks II, although I'm guessing my usage of the term is still perfectly acceptable in mixed company.

EDIT: Ah, I might as well give it away before people start guessing off-color things. The censored word was 'boogie'.

I'm pretty certain multiple meanings of that word are acceptable in mixed company.  For instance:

If given the option on a site, I always turn off censorship. Some of those things are silly.

I was on one site where I submitted short stories about a sci-fi RPG session. I got annoyed when it would block "cockpit."

I had never heard of a site blocking "boogie" though. That's pretty funny.

I guess they don't like listening to doowop either.

Of course, one of the biggest problems with such censorship is that there are so many dialects that perfectly innocuous words in one country may be verboten in another country. So, the censorship brush has to paint some pretty broad strokes to get them all.

Heh, the most funny censor was on MtG Gatherer site. It was very strict, and would censor even if a swear word is in another word. But the fun part was that there were actual MtG card names, that were censored, like "City of Brass" :D

Yeah, the Blizzard forums had that problem with the word "Drape" for quite a while, which was amusing given how many pieces of equipment were the "Drape of Foo."

The game I'm playing now, Guild Wars 2, filters out Sega.  Not sure if it's a Korean swear word or if they're just anxious about competition in the game industry.  Nintendo is fine.

My favorite censorship of all time... For those of you Big Lebowski fans (I know at least Davio is!), you should all know the line "This is what happens when you fuck a stranger in the ass!"

When I saw the movie on Comedy Central?

"This is what happens when you find a stranger in the alps!"

New one I found:

"Crap" is censored. Which kinda makes sense. Until you realise it's used quite happily as a swear word (as in "Oh crap, he's coming for you" is IIRC the exact wording) in one of the Adventure stories (DA Act 3 game 4).

Just... what?

New Rule: Words that aren't censored on television should not be censored in internet games.  Neither harassment nor cursing is a subset of the other.

Tricky.
Words banned in one country are allowed in another.
Completely different rules for each country could be tricky.

And in England we have a watershed time where more violence and bad words are allowed.

i played a game against Qvist recently, and chatted in german. there we notice that the word "jap" was censored. Yep, Yap, jep, jap,..... are terms to say "yes" in a more laid back fashion in german. So we were quite surprise to have this censored.

Is it possible that "jap" is considered explicit language in english. Maybe some sort of snidly denomination for Japanese. i really cant think of anything else

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=jap maybe?

But I agree that it will be incredible difficult to get some curse filter that also filters slang and works in multiple languages without knowing which language it is filtering at the moment.

Please note that some of the more... "obscure" terms on urban dictionary are completely invented, and not actually used by anyone other than the author..

I intended my rule to be as permissive as possible.  Word not banned on TV in the UK?  Don't censor it on the Internet.  Not banned in Norway, or Paraguay, or Azerbaijan?  Don't censor it on the Internet.

(Yes, this means cursing probably wouldn't be censored at all.  That's fine by me.)

Taboo word censorship is a tricky issue. The thing is, we have taboo words because it's good to have them. They have value. This is so true that they are wired differently in our brains - you can have a brain injury that leaves you unable to talk, but still able to swear.

But taboo words are only taboo... if you don't say them. Saying them makes them lose their value.

For Goko I would be surprised if they hand-picked what words to censor - I am betting they had some 3rd party list of words, or censorship option they just turned on.

I bet you're right. That would explain why "crap" shows up in their story while the forum censors it.

It reminds me of watching The Breakfast Club on Fox. The phrase "Eat my shorts" was changed to "Eat my socks." This is the same network that brought us Bart Simpson, who said, "Eat my shorts," many times. But then, I realized that Fox didn't censor the movie; it ordered the movie already censored by someone who thought that shorts was a tad too risqué.

Sometimes, censor filters will include variants of slurs and swear words.

Although, while one might be tempted to think that people who would use that slur would be attempting to circumvent the filter by omitting a G, I think the truth is that most people who would use that slur are of lower intelligence and can't even spell the slur correctly.

Although, it does make things awkward for that Nigerian prince. How am I to receive my 8 million dollars now?

It's the most common substitute if someone intends to get around language filters. Also an easy misspelling by stupid people, such as those who use the word "nigger" in a Dominion chat.

I don't think we're doing any good by trying to shield young impressionable minds from swear words. For one, they likely already know these words anyway.

And besides, I think intent is far more important than what word was actually used. Censoring the word itself does not stop someone from being insulting or derogatory. When being told the following two sentences…

  • That was a fucking awesome move you played.
  • Hurry up you slow idiot. I swear you're doing this on purpose, you jerk.

I would be more offended at the second one even though nothing would be censored (except by those with the most draconian settings that would render the board completely unreadable).

And besides, it's not like censoring will mask the intent. If I'm told, "You're such a #&%*," then I'm going to assume that the person just insulted me. It doesn't matter what word that was; it's been censored, so I'm going to assume the worst, even if it wasn't really an insult. If someone lovingly calls me a putananny, which is the greatest honor you can call someone in his country, I wouldn't know because "puta" got censored. So I'll respond to that person with hostility because it looks like he called me a bad name.

Sometimes people get way too sensitive about things they can't control anyway. Censorship won't stop jerks from spouting off vitriol. Moderators can help, because they can read the intent. The bad thing is moderators can only fix problems after they happen. That's life.[/li][/list]

Man, what the heck, guys. It's an internet game. It's not a forum.

The damage from somebody being unable to curse, or even being unable to say legit things that happen to seem like curse words, is far, far less than the damage from someone being driven away from the game due to offense or due to slurs.

I am all for entirely heavy-handed censorship in a medium such as that.

As an honest answer: they can censor it all they want, just allow me to turn off censorship and mute people.  (Do they give this option?)

I am totally a fan of opt-in (or even opt-out) language filters. Alternatively, language filters that change words to other words, like "fuck" to "hug" or "lovingly caress". Or "Shaq-Fu".

I was going to say this too.  Some years ago I hung around the shirt.woot.com forums a lot.  Woot does a lot of this word swapping, for great hilarity.  Word swapping is not necessarily limited to curses either.

As an April Fools' joke, a board that I used to frequent set up word filters for totally innocuous, common words and rendered everyone unintelligible for a day.
The xkcd forums have a "Mod Mental Health Month" where the mods are given free access to wordfilters and other such fun things. If there's a really good filter, it may not even be rolled back when the month is over.

I am totally a fan of opt-in (or even opt-out) language filters. Alternatively, language filters that change words to other words, like "fuck" to "hug" or "lovingly caress". Or "Shaq-Fu".

Change "nigger" to "member of everyone's favorite ethnicity."

I didn't realise it meant Aussies!

Change "nigger" to "member of everyone's favorite ethnicity."

Fark changes "nigger" and some other variants to "attractive and successful African-American."

The main problem with this type of censorship, though, is that it's disruptive to actual conversation if applied indiscriminately like it is here.  I mean, Niger is an actual country, as has been pointed out, and some German words end in "niger."  Meanwhile, I'm betting that "n1gg3r" isn't censored, despite the fact that someone typing that is most certainly not making a typo.

If you censor "rape" indiscriminately, you end up with "g^#$%fruit", "d^&%^ry", "the#$*^utic", "skysc$&#%r", and "t&*%$zoid."

So, speaking of ****, do any of you ever mistakenly transpose the last two letters of goko when typing the url?  I don't know that I want to visit that website.

Also guko dot com, if I remember correctly, is very NSFW.

I checked for you; gook.com is being domain-squatted.

I just see some Korean characters and a picture of someone writing something on a "Small Business" printout.

No, really.

I think it may have been goku.com that was the NSFW one.  A number of people still type the name that way for some reason.

I wonder how many people still do that? Over 9000?
