Average Joe (Double Submission Game) 6/10
« on: December 26, 2012, 02:35:49 am »

Here's another simple DSG (Double Submission Game).

You can submit any integer value you want, ranging from -Infinity to +Infinity (exclusive of course).
Whoever submits a value that is closest to the average of all submitted values, wins the first round.

After the first round all submissions and the players who submitted them are revealed and round 2 starts with that information. So we have a "blind" first round and the second round where you can see what everyone was going for.

Points per round:
#1: 16
#2: 12
#3: 9
#4: 7
#5: 5
#6: 4
#7: 3
#8: 2
#9: 1
#10: 0

Ties will result in the tied players getting the higher number of points with the player below that skipping a spot. So if 2 players are #1 they each get 16 points with number #2 getting #3's points, which is 9.

Most number of points at the end of round 2 wins.

There are 10 spots, just post "/in" to participate and send me a PM with your number.

Important: "Trash" talking and bluffing is specifically allowed and encouraged. You are allowed to say: "I'm going to submit 0" and of course this isn't binding in any way and you could submit something else or still 0.

Everybody submit 0, so we all win.
If somebody deviates from plan, he will only screw himself, as average will still be closer to 0.

Go.

...spin-offs are still better for all of the previously cited reasons.
But not strictly better, because the spinoff can have a different cost than the expansion.

Ah, but if I submit a ridiculously large number, then the player who submits just slightly above 0 would win, right? :P

unless somebody submits a bit more ridiculously large negative number.

But why would you that, when 0 is the way to win?

I submitted 64^4,603,280. I don't know why, but it seemed like the right thing to do.

If I submit a very large number and he submits a very large number that is still smaller than my very large number, then he could win.

No, because if I declare that I'm submitting a number sufficiently high enough to skew the results in some undefined manner towards one extreme, then it behooves each individual player to try to increase their individual bid to get as close to theoretical new average as possible. If I submit 10,000 in a 10 player game, then there's a good chance that the "average" will be closer to "1,000" than to "0". Of course, this doesn't account for the combination of negative numbers, but I if I propose to go sufficiently high enough that those are irrelevant then it no longer matters. The best bet to "win" at that point for any other player is to try and meet my newly created theoretical average. And the more people I can get to increase their submission, the higher that average will go. Until, taken to the extreme, my eventual submission becomse the very average everybody is trying to achieve!

......
