Fireworks currently outside what means we already have 2013 here.
Time for me to do some statistics  ;D

  • I got 55 lists, 11 less than last time.
  • But, what's a little bit disappointing, the average iso level went from ~29.5 to ~24.5.
  • The submission deadline is now over. But you can still submit your Favourite Cards List if you want as I didn't evaluated them yet.
  • And if you want to submit the Best Card Lists badly, I can bend the rules a little bit and you can submit in the next couple of hours, but only if you are higher than level 30 on isotropic, just to get a higher quality level.
  • Just a note: If you didn't rate Dark Ages cards, I also didn't took your Knights and Ruins rating into account.
  • I will post the first list soon

Maybe not that surprising given that a lot of players have probably lapsed on isotropic of late in order to play with Dark Ages on Goko and Androminion etc.

I pretty much haven't played on iso since September except for the tournament.

I didn't rank the DA cards but all I'm looking forward to is seeing how they perform
(does this deserve a Confession Bear/Scumbag Steve meme ?)
Because of course I have some spoilers about the non-DA cards : Chapel ===== is the best $2.
But who cares about which non-DA card is the best, beside the beginners who still might have a look on the previous rankings ? All we want to know is : what is the worst between scout and thief ? Explorer and saboteur ? Develop and Chancellor ?

More seriously, I believe that we make have a few surprises on the favourite cards, and I also look forward how performed the DA cards among the others. (And I hope Black market===== will be last...)

To generate some discussion until the deadline, I like to hear what list you look most forward to? Of course it'll be interesting to see where the Dark Ages cards will rank. But what list in general is the most interesting one for you? Is is the seemingly hardest category, the $5s? Or one of the new ones: Ruins, Knights, Prizes?

~20 hours left

I am most curious about the $5's and also to see people's thoughts on DA cards. I predict many to be overestimated and undersestimated. Also, what Grujah said about someone ranking Scout as #1.

I look forward to the huge underration of a few DA cards.  Namely Altar, Scavenger, and Hermit.

Well I've had very little experience with DA, so I'm personally expecting my ratings to be pretty far from actuality, but... Hermit seemed very strong at first glance, free trashing from your discard as well AND up to $3 gaining AND the potential to get a one shot Tactician? That sounds like Jack of all Trades on crack! But after playing I think it's good, but not THAT good. Scavenger I have pretty far down... maybe that's a mistake actually, I do feel Chancellor is a little underrated and well leaving one of your best cards on top of your deck is a really strong thing, I guess. Altar also feels like another card that looks really good, but doesn't quite seem to fulfil as much as it first looks like. Probably because it costs $6, meaning by the time you get it it's just that bit harder to match with junk. Definitely good in cursing/ruins games though.

So now you've mentioned these, I'm gonna be interested to see where they place as well.

Don't get me wrong, they aren't like the absolute best cards in the game.  I just expect them to be well below where they should be.

I've been waiting for the top 5 coin cards to be updated. When will this happen? I see the top 20 are still missing here. http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/List_of_Cards_by_Qvist_Rankings

As noted in the Guilds preview, I think it would be neat to see the lists according to general use:

Village types: has +2 (or more in the case of crossroads) actions
cantrips: has at least +1 card (so includes laboratory) but only +1 action
+1 actions: any card that has +1 action and doesn't fit above
Treasure: any treasure card
Reaction: any reaction card
Duration: any duration card
Alternate VP: any victory card that is a kingdom card
Trashing: any card that sends a card to the trash or supply
trash for benefit: any card that trashes a card, but receives SOMETHING in its place (if available)  so includes upgrade, bishop, salvage, and apprentice
smaller hand attack: any attack that forces other players to have smaller hands (including minion, bureaucrat, and cutpurse)
Curse/junk givers: any card that can give cards to other players, this could include governor, but the rating should be on the impact of giving junk, so governor probably would not be high on the list. If anything, while not an attack, masquerade SHOULD be on this list.
terminal draws: ANY card that has +cards, but is terminal
Free card: any action card that has  "gain" ability that applies to the person playing it but isn't trash for benefit
Trash attackers: cards that trash other people's stuff
Money equivalents: any card that gives +$ or can give +$
+buys: any card with the potential for a +buy
Deck preview: look at what is coming up in the deck (oracle, cartographer)
Treasure messer attack: any attack dealing with messing with other people's treasures: thief, taxman, pirate ship, etc…
discard for benefit: cards that you can discard cards in your hand for a benefit: stable, hamlet, etc...
miscellaneous: anything that doesn't REALLY match the above: golem, throne room, coppersmith, etc…

Also, I think it would be fun to have ones for specific deck TYPES like slog or rush.

If I knew how Qvist does his, I would host it out of curiosity.

If we ever do get a  single ranking of ALL cards, then you can filter by whatever types you like, which seems a lot easier than making individual lists for each of these categories. There's some talk in other threads about the best way to actually do that though since ranking 200+ cards can be cumbersome.

If you want to put it on the wiki, go ahead! I think Qvist has done those already, but nobody's put them on the wiki yet.

I agree, but I think filtering would not hold the same meaning for some categories.  For example, Governor can have trash for benefit, but as a trash for benefit would it compare the same as remake as a T4B as it does overall?  Probably not.

The reasoning for the categories is to break down utility and rank it based on the utility in question and side benefits it gives WHILE giving the utility.  For example, for village-types, the all give +2 actions, but what secondary benefit does it give WHILE giving +2 actions that makes it so great, and is that secondary benefit dependent upon the set, or is it always awesome/awful? Border village and walled village both give +1 card +2 actions, but the ability to get a free $5 card with border village makes it worth its cost of $6 in comparison to what you get for $4 with walled village.  For a category like this one, it would be ranking the utility of the secondary effect (in the context of having +2 actions).  Is +$2 and no +card for $5 better than a +card with a +buy for $4 when combined with +2 actions?

As a side note, I did some fun number crunching.

I took the current lists (sorry alchemy/guilds) and assigned a score to each card based on how high it was on its list and how long the list was

Because things can get "tight" they were in five card blocks.

For example, there are 20 $2 cards.  the first five cards got a score of 4, then next five got 3, etc...

the max for $3 was 6, $4-10, and $5-12.  This helped weight the importance/utility of $5 vs. $2 (will show in a sec).  For $6 and above, it was harder, so I just did the (15-the rank)/2.

To make a better comparison between sets, each score was normalized by how many cards there were of that amount.

For example, the base set has 3 $2 cards, and the total score was 9, so the $2 score for base was 3.

SOOO, what does that say?

The top three for each price category:

For $2 cards: (average: 2.27)
cornucopia: 4.00 (because of hamlet)
Base: 3.00 (because of chapel)
hinterlands/intrigue: 2.67

$3: (average: 3.08)
Seaside: 4.2 (ambassador and fishing village)
Dark Ages: 3.67 (mainly hermit)
Intrigue: 3.67 (steward and swindler)

$4: (average: 5.4)
Cornucopia: 8.4 (tournament, young witch, and remake in top 5)
Intrigue: 5.17
Hinterlands: 5.17

$5: (average:6.51)
hinterlands: 7.1 (ill-gotten gains and margrave)
cornucopia: 6.75
seaside: 6.88 (wharf, ghost ship, tactician)

$6+: (average: 1.77)
Prosperity: 4.63
hinterlands: 3.25
cornucopia: 3

overall

1 cornucopia: 25.65
2 hinterlands: 21.58
3 Intrigue: 20.96
4 prosperity: 18.85 (ONLY because of $6+ cards, otherwise drops to last)
5 seaside: 18.01
6 Dark Ages: 16.82
7 Base: 15.19

So this says cornucopia has the highest concentration of good cards.

The other analysis I did was look at how many cards each set has in the top 10 (5 for $2 and $6) and normalized it by the total number of cards in the set

1 Cornucopia: 6 (46%)
2 Prosperity: 8 (32%) but ONLY because of $6 cards, OTHERwise it drops to #4 with only 4 cards
3 seaside: 8 (30%)
4 intrigue: 7 (29%) because of all the nasty attacks mainly
5 hinterlands: 5 (19%)
6 base: 3 (12%)
7 Dark ages: 2 (6%)

I think this says a lot about cornucopia.  I know most people like other sets, but this has always been my favorite.

Forgot one thing.

If, instead of scoring as above, I score it based on the amount of cards in that category - the rank (i.e. 20-1 for chapel) and weight it by the number of cards from a set in a category:

(the category ranks are very close)

but overall

1 cornucopia: 111.1
2 Hinterlands: 90.7
3 seaside: 87.2
4 intrigue: 84.8
5 Dark ages: 79.4
6 prosperity: 75.7
7 base: 64.5

so ALSO, about the same.

So, I don't understand this - you block them together in groups of five presumably because a difference of 1 rank might not mean much... but this doesn't actually solve that problem, really - now it just depends on where things happen to land. So the difference between 1 and 5 is less than the difference between 5 and 6?

Using a log-scale should tackle the problem without running into the issue WW points out.

Or, you know, you could just use the weighted averages that Qvist posts.
