The Dominion Cards Lists 2013 Edition
« on: December 19, 2012, 12:42:05 pm »
+18

One year passed since the first Dominion Card Lists were compiled, the skill level of all players raised and a lot of new knowledge is gained. Also Dark Ages came out. Many have few knowledge about the new cards, but others have already a lot of experience with them. That means it's time for the 2013 edition of the Dominion Card List(s). In my signature you'll find the links to the last year lists. The most important changes are in red.

What do you have to do?
If you like to contribute, send me a PM for one or the other list (or both) or fill in the respective online form.
Please be sure that you put each card in order and don't miss any. If you don't know a expansion (e.g. Dark Ages) very well you can choose to leave it out. But be sure that if you want to include a card of a specific expansion, you have ro rank all cards of the expansion. There are no restriction with Promo cards, so if you don't know Governor very well, you can leave it out. (As I see now, the interface has changed on the polls. You cannot leave out cards now. Just put them all on the bottom and leave a note in the comment.)
Cards are only counted if they are kingdom cards, so no Copper, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Potion, Estate, Duchy, Province, Colony, Curse, Prizes, Shelters, Ruins, Spoils, Madman, Mercenary or individual Knights are allowed.
If you want to look up the card texts and also the last year's lists, just go to our new wiki. http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com
If you submit your list, you also agree that I may give this to third party, like rrenaud. If you don't agree leave a comment or send me a PM.

If you've submitted last year, I will not take your last submission into account.
But if you didn't save your last year's submission and you need it, feel free to PM me and I will send it to you.

1.) The best cards of each price level

Best Cards
Just arrange the cards for your ranking with the best card going first and the worst on the last position.
I included extra lists for Prizes, individual Knights and Ruins. These are optional, you don't have to rank them if you don't want.
And like written above, you don't have to rank all cards, but if you leave cards out, you have to leave the whole expansion out.

If you want PM me, this list should be subdivided into several lists, containing:
20 $1-$2 cards, 32 $3 cards, 53 $4 cards, 61 $5 cards, 16 $6+ cards, 10 Potion cards = 192

Usual disclaimer: This list should cause discussion not hassle. Of course it's difficult to compare some of the cards because pretty much every card has some situations where it shines and situations where it doesn't. This isn't a scientific list, just a compiled list of the community's opinion of the best cards.

2.) The favourite cards

Favourite Cards (ordered version)
Favourite Cards (rating version)
You can rank the cards, based on whatever you like: strength/weakness, originality in design, fun and "no-fun" factor, whatever.
As ordering 192 cards can be very painful, I included a second option to rate the cards. I used the finest rating which was available (0-14) but you can also use 0-5 or 10-5 as long as the highest value means that you like it more. You can also send me a PM with a rating from 0-20 or any scale you like. Or just arrange the cards for your ranking with the favourite card going first and the least favourite on the last position. No matter what version you choose, all 192 cards need to be in the list. And like written above, you don't have to rank all cards, but if you leave cards out, you have to leave the whole expansion out.

What else?
Submission deadline is the 31st of December 11:59pm UTC.
Each card will get a percentage value based on the rank. So your favourite or best card gets 100% and your least favourite or worst gets 0%. This will result in a compiled list of all of your lists.
Then I will post the rankings in 10-15 card blocks from worst to best to raise the tension.
I will also include the ususal statistic data. And I will also update the comments to each card if necessary.

Let's see how many submissions we get this time. The more we get the better the rankings will be. I can't wait to get your submissions. If you see any errors or have any questions, ask them here.

Best Ruins
Best $1-$2 Cards Part I / Part II
Best $3 Cards Part I / Part II / Part III
Best $4 Cards Part I / Part II / Part III / Part IV / Part V
Best $5 Cards Part I / Part II / Part III / Part IV / Part V / Part VI
Best Knights
Best $6 Cards
Best Potion Cards
Best Prizes

Time to bust out the old lists and start randomly shoving Dark Ages cards in there! :)

Wow, Urchin looks strong, though I've never played with it. Uh, 13th best $3 card, right?

Oh man. Time to again try to decide how to consider multiplayer games, to figure out how to rank the reactions.

I actually ranked Scout above something.  Forget what.  I did rank Wishing Well lower than Chancellor this time.

I like to think I ranked the Dark Ages cards fairly.

Sweet! I just realized you can click and drag instead of selecting numbers from the dropdown menu. The interface doesn't suck after all.

Remember, Thief can be important in multiplayer! But Scout doesn't improve in multiplayer. This is my only basis for ranking Scout beneath Thief. If you consider the totality of Dominion 2p, 3p, 4p, Thief is better.

If you want to use the poll, just put all DA cards on the bottom and on the last page when you put your name in, just make a little note, just in case it wasn't obvious for me.

I ranked Scout above Rats.  That's something!

Random thoughts:

I think trashing is now more important than ever, so I've done some crazy stuff like put Remake above Sea Hag this time.

I also think Marauder is incredibly overrated (still good, mind).

Ranking those $5s was quite an endeavor.

Library probably saw my biggest jump in ratings.

I now consider Apprentice a key $5 card, but it's still no curser, I suppose.

Right guys here's the plan:

1) Everyone puts Scout on the top of their list
2) If Qvist accuses us of trolling, we ask if he missed the strategy revelations about it, and how it's pretty obviously the best $4 in enough situations to put it on top
3) If Qvist tries to read this post, we come up with some plan to avoid that happening
4) ? ? ?
5) PROFIT!!!
Logged
...spin-offs are still better for all of the previously cited reasons.
But not strictly better, because the spinoff can have a different cost than the expansion.
I hereby declare myself the best dominion player in the world. Obviously.

Except that 4p is an inferior game to 2p and 3p (mostly because of even stronger 1p bias and fewer Provinces per player), so I'm inclined to weight it much less.  (3p, OTOH, definitely is worth taking into account).  And Thief doesn't improve that much, the only thing I can really see is that Thief-Gardens becomes somewhat viable.

I'm debating whether even to submit a ranking; it wouldn't feel right to ignore Dark Ages but it also doesn't feel right to ignore them either.

Thief Gardens is already playable in 2p on some boards. Thief Gardens in 4p is crazy sauce.

I feel like one of those ignores is supposed to be rank or something; that or I just don't know what you're trying to say for some reason :P

Qvist, please ignore my Dark Ages rankings on the 2-6+ cards.  Having played a little with Knights and Ruinseseseses, I went ahead and ranked those, so feel free to include or exclude them as you see fit.

I'm going to woefully underrate Feodum. I just don't know how to use it, outside of the obvious "silver-gainer+Feodum" combo, which still gets beat by a reasonable Province engine.

While I hate to stifle discussions, wouldn't it be better if we didn't discuss what we were ranking where?  Otherwise we could end up with a kind of group-think which isn't really the idea.

Actually, I was going to post the same. I'm glad to see that discussion, but it might be better to see the discussion when the results are revealed.

And btw, yeah, this time I got stickied.

Agreed.  All conversation about why Scout should be ranked last needs to stop. <snicker>

Couldn't help it, sorry Piemaster.

I feel like if an experienced player looked at my rankings, they'd be like,
"Huh. They must like native village a lot."

and then..., upon reaching the $4-$5

"How on Earth did this person ever reach level 30?!"

Different people favor different cards, and can make different strategies work.  Like apparently WW hates Bishop, and I tend to win when I go after it like a fox after a chicken.

I wonder if it would be easier to set up a MaxDiff approach to ranking.  I know it is tiring to get through the $4's and $5's.

You stalk the Bishop, taking in every detail of its surroundings, waiting for the right moment to pouce so as to maximize your benefit and minimize your exposure to potential predators?

You, sir, are one intense Dominion player.  ;)

I'm planning to program a facemesh style little app for this, but had no time for it so far. I don't know MaxDiff but it seems like it has a similar approach although I don't know how much can be said about a ~60 card list if you only compare the best and worse card.

I'm not sure what you are referring to. The top card in the poll is the best one and it has a 1.

I'm debating whether even to submit a ranking; it wouldn't feel right to ignore Dark Ages but it also doesn't feel right to ignore them either.

I feel like one of those ignores is supposed to be rank or something; that or I just don't know what you're trying to say for some reason :P

Yeah, whoops.  That's what I meant.

Let's see how many submissions we get this time. The more we get the better the rankings will be.

In hopes of maximizing the number of rankings, I took the liberty of posting about this on BGG and reddit.

The usual way to do it is you ask people repeatedly about pairs of cards, then you use those pairwise comparisons to build a ranking. This is easy but costs lots of time because you need so many questions. Max diff is a way to do this and get more information per question: when you pick the best and worst of a b c d e you get a > b, a > c, a > d, a > e, b > e, c > e, and d > e all in one question.

For last time's Favorite Cards list, I wrote a program in Python that helps me sort the cards by doing 2-card comparisons. It works pretty fast even for the 157 cards for the whole list, and would definitely be reasonable for any price point lists. If anyone wants to use it, let me know and I can put it in a Gist.

didn't they do something like that in the facebook movie? rating women by comparing them against each other? we could always try setting up something similar for dominion cards. just have a page with category options by price point, and then display two cards, nothing else. user clicks to vote, and it refreshes a new random option. over time you could probably build a decent data set of comparisons. it would probably function well over time too, as new cards can be slotted in and it shouldn't affect previous head to head comparisons. this could also be easier/more fun than the slog of making a rank for the middle 80% of cards at a price point.

to clarify, it wouldnt have to replace these card lists at all, it could be done along side of them. i think that these lists are pretty sweet, even though im too lazy to contribute to them.

Yes, it's exactly that, but the idea is that if you have multiple options, you get significantly more data at not much extra cost.  Even just making it three options gives you tons of data.

Alright, here's my cleaned-up user-friendly Dominion Card Sorter. You can use it to sort any of the card lists, including all card, ruins, knights, and prizes. Just run "python DominionCardSorter.py" and everything else should be self-explanatory from there!

(It uses the built-in Python sorting algorithm, which sometimes asks you for the same comparison twice, so don't worry if that happens.)

For someone who knows something about web interfaces? Probably easy. For me? Hard. That code is way open source, so if anyone wants to give it a shot, be my guest.

I still don't really like the favourite cards system, even the rating version. Is it not possible to rank only a top 10 / top 20 next time ? With a system like 10 points for the 1st, 9 for the 2nd, etc.

I vastly preferred the rating to the ordered for the favorites.  192 cards is too much to try and put in an ordered list, especially since the whole thing lags.

For the $4s and $5s, I would only trust my top and bottom rankings.  Everything in the middle is just "whatever, I'll put it there, there are too many of these."

Use my Python sorter! It helps to think of comparing 2 cards, since that is often easier to do than placing a card into a partially completed list.

I updated my sorter to remove the expansion name from the cards.

I vastly preferred the rating to the ordered for the favorites.  192 cards is too much to try and put in an ordered list, especially since the whole thing lags.

I submitted mine yesterday but I'm already regretting some of my rankings of Dark Ages cards. Oh well.

Thanks for coming with that. I wish I knew about it ahead of time, but for next time, I am sure it will come in quite handy.

How hard would it be to make a web interface for that?

I don't really understand this Python thing, but the common way to do pairwise comparisons is to use simple tables (which, however, might become quite big): Something like this:

Don't really know if this would make things easier...

Just run "python DominionCardSorter.py" and everything else should be self-explanatory from there!
I have downloaded Python 3.3 and your file. I tried to run it the way described in http://mail.python.org/pipermail/tutor/2004-July/030634.html - when I hit Enter I see a black window appear for a moment and then nothing happens. I'm on Windows XP. What am I doing wrong?

The problem with this is that it requires about n^2 comparisons, where n is the number of cards. A good sorting algorithm runs in n*log(n) time, which is what the Python program does, which means you don't have to give it near as many comparisons.

The first problem is that I wrote it in Python 2.7, which isn't compatible with Python 3.3, so it's probably getting errors. I'd recommend downloading Python 2.7.

Next, instead of running on the command line in Windows (since it's a pain), I'd recommend opening IDLE, a Python interpreter GUI that comes with Python. Click Start -> Programs ->Python 2.7 -> IDLE (Python GUI). Then, click File -> New Window, paste in the program, save it somewhere, and then click Run -> Run Module. It will then run the program, and output your results so you can copy and paste them.

If you're on Mac or Linux, it's easy to just run it from command line by doing "python DominionCardSorter.py", as long as you have a Python 2.x.

I used a bucket sort method in Excel.

I put each card name to be ranked in a row, then gave it a number:

1 for good
2 for meh
3 for bad

had Excel sort it, then for each group (bucket), repeated the process. I usually just divided each bucket into two groups each time until it got down to six or less in a group, then I just ranked them in order.

Even for the $5 cards, it only took 4 iterations. For the Favorite cards it took 5 (I started with 4 buckets for the first iteration there).

For each cost category, I'd say my error was +/- 2 slots. For the favorites, maybe 5.

That's a good way too! Bucket sort is efficient if you can define good buckets.

While I hate to stifle discussions, wouldn't it be better if we didn't discuss what we were ranking where?  Otherwise we could end up with a kind of group-think which isn't really the idea.

Agreed.  All conversation about why Scout should be ranked last needs to stop. <snicker>

Couldn't help it, sorry Piemaster.

It does need to stop.  'Cause it's inaccurate.  :P

(Sorry, couldn't help myself.  Actually just yesterday I got good use out of Scout in a Scrying Pool-Baron deck, so there.)

Open your Terminal (click the magnifying glass in the top right corner and type "terminal"). Change directory to wherever the program is saved - for example, if you save it to your desktop, type "cd Desktop". Type "ls" to make sure you see the program. If so, type "python DominionCardSorter.py", and it should start right up!

Good luck, I haven't submitted yet :P. Mainly, I want to play a little more with DA on Goko, before I submit.

I ran into this problem when I just copy-pasted the code from the github page (rather than actually downloading/cloning it); here's code you can copy-paste with indentation that should work (works in IDLE on my Mac at least):

Just re-submit if you have the time. I'll take your new submission, if you do.

Can I resubmit if I desire. I am thinking of trying out Schneaus rating thing. Although, I think the list I sent you was pretty good considering I had well over 500 DA games under my belt when I submitted my list, but maybe I can make my rankings just slightly better.

EDIT: I hope it's okay. I have resubmitted my list.

I've just tried this. When running the module, I get error message: There's an error in your program: expected an indented block". In the code, word "set" in line 39 is highlighted in red.

I ran into this problem when I just copy-pasted the code from the github page (rather than actually downloading/cloning it); here's code you can copy-paste with indentation that should work (works in IDLE on my Mac at least):

Code: [Select]
import random

allCards = ['Cellar', 'Chapel', 'Moat', 'Courtyard', 'Pawn', 'Secret Chamber', 'Embargo', 'Haven', 'Lighthouse', 'Native Village', 'Pearl Diver', 'Herbalist', 'Hamlet', 'Crossroads', 'Duchess', "Fool's Gold", 'Beggar', 'Poor House', 'Squire', 'Vagrant', 'Chancellor', 'Village', 'Woodcutter', 'Workshop', 'Great Hall', 'Masquerade', 'Shanty Town', 'Steward', 'Swindler', 'Wishing Well', 'Ambassador', 'Fishing Village', 'Lookout', 'Smugglers', 'Warehouse', 'Loan', 'Trade Route', 'Watchtower', 'Fortune Teller', 'Menagerie', 'Develop', 'Oasis', 'Oracle', 'Scheme', 'Tunnel', 'Forager', 'Hermit/Madman', 'Market Square', 'Sage', 'Storeroom', 'Urchin/Mercenary', 'Black Market', 'Bureaucrat', 'Feast', 'Gardens', 'Militia', 'Moneylender', 'Remodel', 'Smithy', 'Spy', 'Thief', 'Throne Room', 'Baron', 'Bridge', 'Conspirator', 'Coppersmith', 'Ironworks', 'Mining Village', 'Scout', 'Caravan', 'Cutpurse', 'Island', 'Navigator', 'Pirate Ship', 'Salvager', 'Sea Hag', 'Treasure Map', 'Bishop', 'Monument', 'Quarry', 'Talisman', "Worker's Village", 'Farming Village', 'Horse Traders', 'Remake', 'Tournament', 'Young Witch', 'Jack of all Trades', 'Noble Brigand', 'Nomad Camp', 'Silk Road', 'Spice Merchant', 'Trader', 'Armory', 'Death Cart', 'Feodum', 'Fortress', 'Ironmonger', 'Marauder', 'Procession', 'Rats', 'Scavenger', 'Wandering Minstrel', 'Envoy', 'Walled Village', 'Council Room', 'Festival', 'Laboratory', 'Library', 'Market', 'Mine', 'Witch', 'Duke', 'Minion', 'Saboteur', 'Torturer', 'Trading Post', 'Tribute', 'Upgrade', 'Bazaar', 'Explorer', 'Ghost Ship', 'Merchant Ship', 'Outpost', 'Tactician', 'Treasury', 'Wharf', 'Apprentice', 'City', 'Contraband', 'Counting House', 'Mint', 'Mountebank', 'Rabble', 'Royal Seal', 'Vault', 'Venture', 'Harvest', 'Horn of Plenty', 'Hunting Party', 'Jester', 'Cache', 'Cartographer', 'Embassy', 'Haggler', 'Highway', 'Ill-Gotten Gains', 'Inn', 'Mandarin', 'Margrave', 'Stables', 'Bandit Camp', 'Band of Misfits', 'Catacombs', 'Counterfeit', 'Count', 'Cultist', 'Graverobber', 'Junk Dealer', 'Knights', 'Mystic', 'Pillage', 'Rebuild', 'Rogue', 'Governor', 'Stash', 'Adventurer', 'Harem', 'Nobles', 'Goons', 'Grand Market', 'Hoard', 'Bank', 'Expand', 'Forge', "King's Court", 'Peddler', 'Fairgrounds', 'Border Village', 'Farmland', 'Altar', 'Hunting Grounds', 'Transmute', 'Vineyard', 'Apothecary', 'Scrying Pool', 'University', 'Alchemist', 'Familiar', "Philosopher's Stone", 'Golem', 'Possession']

I should have waited... I submitted, and THEN went to play the DA adventures on goko, and then immediately regretted so many of my DA rankings.

Of course, it's okay.

I am curious to hear (maybe after the list has been revealed?) how people's non-Schneau-lists and Schneau-lists compare. To be fair, that should be MaxDiff and no MaxDiff. I did the $2, $3, $6, and P cards before his sorter. Anyone else notice significant shifts?

Personally (and using the sorter right now) I'm checking my lists after they're made, and making adjustments which don't look right. But on the whole it seems pretty good. The main issue is, what it's essentially doing is asking you to place a card among the ones you've already sorted, and if you place one wrong early and it ends up about 1/2, 1/4 or 3/4s of the way through your list, it can really screw things up, as those are basically the key points where comparisons are going to hit. For example I think I put one of my $3's slightly higher than I think it deserved (Market Square I think), and ended up putting more stuff above it, but it ended up with a bunch of slightly better cards below Market Square, and a bunch of slightly worse cards above it, which I fixed by hand.

36 have submitted the survey and then there are about 5 more which I got per PM. But there are still 19 uncompleted surveys. I don't know if there are not yet finished or if they resigned because the interface isn't that good or the task itself is too difficult. That means that we already have more than in the first edition, but still way less than last time. So, go submit.

For me, I felt Schneau's list was probably a bit more accurate. It showed me how I subconsciously viewed cards, and I felt that was a better way of rating cards.

I'm guessing not as many submitted as last time because not as many people have had an opportunity to play many DA games since some people are holding out on playing on Goko.

You can rate and leave out Dark Ages, so that shouldn't be a problem.

I do the same thing of sorting by hand afterward. I think it's important to fix small (and sometimes large) mistakes that occur because of the unintuitive system of sorting. But, I think the program gives you a great baseline to work with.

I have not read the entire thread. So it is possible that this point has been addressed elsewhere.

I love the lists. They are a big help to me in trying to better understand the game.

I would be happy to participate. But I do not have all the expansions and thus do not know all the cards (i only play in real life).

I am presuming that it is better for me not to participate. Is that right? If there is a way for people who do not know all the cards to offer their thoughts on the cards they do know, I would be happy to participate.

Based on what has been said, you can participate for sure.
Just rate the cards you feel comfortable rating, stick the rest at the bottom, and write in the message box at the end which expansions you did not rate.

It would probably be even easier if you sent him your rankings by PM.

You should definitely participate! Just rate the sets you know.

If you don't know a expansion (e.g. Dark Ages) very well you can choose to leave it out. But be sure that if you want to include a card of a specific expansion, you have to rank all cards of the expansion. There are no restriction with Promo cards, so if you don't know Governor very well, you can leave it out. (As I see now, the interface has changed on the polls. You cannot leave out cards now. Just put them all on the bottom and leave a note in the comment.)

No problem. It's also a ton of fun.

Edit: We should currently have 48 ratings. So let's try and get over 50 ratings.

To generate some discussion until the deadline, I like to hear what list you look most forward to? Of course it'll be interesting to see where the Dark Ages cards will rank. But what list in general is the most interesting one for you? Is is the seemingly hardest category, the $5s? Or one of the new ones: Ruins, Knights, Prizes?

I am most curious about the $5's and also to see people's thoughts on DA cards. I predict many to be overestimated and undersestimated. Also, what Grujah said about someone ranking Scout as #1.

I look forward to the huge underration of a few DA cards.  Namely Altar, Scavenger, and Hermit.

What about Rebuild

To generate some discussion until the deadline, I like to hear what list you look most forward to? Of course it'll be interesting to see where the Dark Ages cards will rank. But what list in general is the most interesting one for you? Is is the seemingly hardest category, the $5s? Or one of the new ones: Ruins, Knights, Prizes?

I want to see where       Rats ranks personally.

I also want to see if you all thought I would mention some other card due to the length of the spoiler  ;D

I analyzed about 40 of the 49 submissions so far. That a little bit less than last year, but that's not so surprising considering Holiday Season.
But I must say there's a big lack of high level player submissions this time what is a little bit disappointing if I'm honest. I hope that we still get a high quality list this time.

~15 hours left

So, there's still time to submit.

Well I've had very little experience with DA, so I'm personally expecting my ratings to be pretty far from actuality, but... Hermit seemed very strong at first glance, free trashing from your discard as well AND up to $3 gaining AND the potential to get a one shot Tactician? That sounds like Jack of all Trades on crack! But after playing I think it's good, but not THAT good. Scavenger I have pretty far down... maybe that's a mistake actually, I do feel Chancellor is a little underrated and well leaving one of your best cards on top of your deck is a really strong thing, I guess. Altar also feels like another card that looks really good, but doesn't quite seem to fulfil as much as it first looks like. Probably because it costs $6, meaning by the time you get it it's just that bit harder to match with junk. Definitely good in cursing/ruins games though.

So now you've mentioned these, I'm gonna be interested to see where they place as well.

But not strictly better, because the spinoff can have a different cost than the expansion.
I hereby declare myself the best dominion player in the world. Obviously.

Ok, no problem, I'll try to rank up ~10 levels to get to 40+ so there is more of high ranked ones.

I don't know if my submission is taken into accout, but if it is... I ranked this curser so high : it is Torturer.
And I lost my worst game for a while with this card today... it's obvious I shouldn't have gone alchemists === ! But I haven't the log.

Good. I was afraid after I ranked them because it got back on the same survey page without anything like "Your submission has been taken into account".

Now let's see. All I hope is that Scout goes better and leaves its places to other cards that deserve it better (like some action card with the VP symbol on the illustration...)

Phew got that done.
My method:
"Well I know the best 1 or 2, so that's easy.
That's pretty good: 3rd, that's pretty good: 3rd, that's pretty bad: last, that's pretty bad: last, that's pretty good: 3rd, okay that's all of them bit of mixing up yeah maybe hmm maybe that's good enough can't be bothered looking at this list any more - next."

Fireworks currently outside what means we already have 2013 here.
Time for me to do some statistics  ;D

  • I got 55 lists, 11 less than last time.
  • But, what's a little bit disappointing, the average iso level went from ~29.5 to ~24.5.
  • The submission deadline is now over. But you can still submit your Favourite Cards List if you want as I didn't evaluated them yet.
  • And if you want to submit the Best Card Lists badly, I can bend the rules a little bit and you can submit in the next couple of hours, but only if you are higher than level 30 on isotropic, just to get a higher quality level.
  • Just a note: If you didn't rate Dark Ages cards, I also didn't took your Knights and Ruins rating into account.
  • I will post the first list soon

Maybe not that surprising given that a lot of players have probably lapsed on isotropic of late in order to play with Dark Ages on Goko and Androminion etc.

I didn't rank the DA cards but all I'm looking forward to is seeing how they perform
(does this deserve a Confession Bear/Scumbag Steve meme ?)
Because of course I have some spoilers about the non-DA cards : Chapel ===== is the best $2.
But who cares about which non-DA card is the best, beside the beginners who still might have a look on the previous rankings ? All we want to know is : what is the worst between scout and thief ? Explorer and saboteur ? Develop and Chancellor ?

More seriously, I believe that we make have a few surprises on the favourite cards, and I also look forward how performed the DA cards among the others. (And I hope Black market===== will be last...)

As noted in the Guilds preview, I think it would be neat to see the lists according to general use:

Village types: has +2 (or more in the case of crossroads) actions
cantrips: has at least +1 card (so includes laboratory) but only +1 action
+1 actions: any card that has +1 action and doesn't fit above
Treasure: any treasure card
Reaction: any reaction card
Duration: any duration card
Alternate VP: any victory card that is a kingdom card
Trashing: any card that sends a card to the trash or supply
trash for benefit: any card that trashes a card, but receives SOMETHING in its place (if available)  so includes upgrade, bishop, salvage, and apprentice
smaller hand attack: any attack that forces other players to have smaller hands (including minion, bureaucrat, and cutpurse)
Curse/junk givers: any card that can give cards to other players, this could include governor, but the rating should be on the impact of giving junk, so governor probably would not be high on the list. If anything, while not an attack, masquerade SHOULD be on this list.
terminal draws: ANY card that has +cards, but is terminal
Free card: any action card that has  "gain" ability that applies to the person playing it but isn't trash for benefit
Trash attackers: cards that trash other people's stuff
Money equivalents: any card that gives +$ or can give +$
+buys: any card with the potential for a +buy
Deck preview: look at what is coming up in the deck (oracle, cartographer)
Treasure messer attack: any attack dealing with messing with other people's treasures: thief, taxman, pirate ship, etc…
discard for benefit: cards that you can discard cards in your hand for a benefit: stable, hamlet, etc...
miscellaneous: anything that doesn't REALLY match the above: golem, throne room, coppersmith, etc…

Also, I think it would be fun to have ones for specific deck TYPES like slog or rush.

If I knew how Qvist does his, I would host it out of curiosity.

If we ever do get a  single ranking of ALL cards, then you can filter by whatever types you like, which seems a lot easier than making individual lists for each of these categories. There's some talk in other threads about the best way to actually do that though since ranking 200+ cards can be cumbersome.

I agree, but I think filtering would not hold the same meaning for some categories.  For example, Governor can have trash for benefit, but as a trash for benefit would it compare the same as remake as a T4B as it does overall?  Probably not.

The reasoning for the categories is to break down utility and rank it based on the utility in question and side benefits it gives WHILE giving the utility.  For example, for village-types, the all give +2 actions, but what secondary benefit does it give WHILE giving +2 actions that makes it so great, and is that secondary benefit dependent upon the set, or is it always awesome/awful? Border village and walled village both give +1 card +2 actions, but the ability to get a free $5 card with border village makes it worth its cost of $6 in comparison to what you get for $4 with walled village.  For a category like this one, it would be ranking the utility of the secondary effect (in the context of having +2 actions).  Is +$2 and no +card for $5 better than a +card with a +buy for $4 when combined with +2 actions?

As a side note, I did some fun number crunching.

I took the current lists (sorry alchemy/guilds) and assigned a score to each card based on how high it was on its list and how long the list was

Because things can get "tight" they were in five card blocks.

For example, there are 20 $2 cards.  the first five cards got a score of 4, then next five got 3, etc...

the max for $3 was 6, $4-10, and $5-12.  This helped weight the importance/utility of $5 vs. $2 (will show in a sec).  For $6 and above, it was harder, so I just did the (15-the rank)/2.

To make a better comparison between sets, each score was normalized by how many cards there were of that amount.

For example, the base set has 3 $2 cards, and the total score was 9, so the $2 score for base was 3.

SOOO, what does that say?

The top three for each price category:

For $2 cards: (average: 2.27)
cornucopia: 4.00 (because of hamlet)
Base: 3.00 (because of chapel)
hinterlands/intrigue: 2.67

$3: (average: 3.08)
Seaside: 4.2 (ambassador and fishing village)
Dark Ages: 3.67 (mainly hermit)
Intrigue: 3.67 (steward and swindler)

$4: (average: 5.4)
Cornucopia: 8.4 (tournament, young witch, and remake in top 5)
Intrigue: 5.17
Hinterlands: 5.17

$5: (average:6.51)
hinterlands: 7.1 (ill-gotten gains and margrave)
cornucopia: 6.75
seaside: 6.88 (wharf, ghost ship, tactician)

$6+: (average: 1.77)
Prosperity: 4.63
hinterlands: 3.25
cornucopia: 3

overall

1 cornucopia: 25.65
2 hinterlands: 21.58
3 Intrigue: 20.96
4 prosperity: 18.85 (ONLY because of $6+ cards, otherwise drops to last)
5 seaside: 18.01
6 Dark Ages: 16.82
7 Base: 15.19

So this says cornucopia has the highest concentration of good cards.

The other analysis I did was look at how many cards each set has in the top 10 (5 for $2 and $6) and normalized it by the total number of cards in the set

1 Cornucopia: 6 (46%)
2 Prosperity: 8 (32%) but ONLY because of $6 cards, OTHERwise it drops to #4 with only 4 cards
3 seaside: 8 (30%)
4 intrigue: 7 (29%) because of all the nasty attacks mainly
5 hinterlands: 5 (19%)
6 base: 3 (12%)
7 Dark ages: 2 (6%)

I think this says a lot about cornucopia.  I know most people like other sets, but this has always been my favorite.

Forgot one thing.

If, instead of scoring as above, I score it based on the amount of cards in that category - the rank (i.e. 20-1 for chapel) and weight it by the number of cards from a set in a category:

(the category ranks are very close)

but overall

1 cornucopia: 111.1
2 Hinterlands: 90.7
3 seaside: 87.2
4 intrigue: 84.8
5 Dark ages: 79.4
6 prosperity: 75.7
7 base: 64.5

so ALSO, about the same.

So, I don't understand this - you block them together in groups of five presumably because a difference of 1 rank might not mean much... but this doesn't actually solve that problem, really - now it just depends on where things happen to land. So the difference between 1 and 5 is less than the difference between 5 and 6?

Using a log-scale should tackle the problem without running into the issue WW points out.

Or, you know, you could just use the weighted averages that Qvist posts.

I guess I was afraid certain cards would get too much weight for a set.  I am not looking at individual cards, but sets as a whole.  However, on the secondary list where it is weighted by number of cards - rank, the set list is very similar.

As for heron's comment, I haven't seen Qvists "weights".  I just took the lists from the wiki.

Soooo were these lists ever finished for this particular ranking? I mean Qvist was doing an amazing job but he has been suddenly absent from the forums for about four months.

Choking back tears I wonder if we'll ever see him again... OK maybe that's a touch dramatic, but I hope he's OK.

I really looked forward to these, though, and it would be really neat to at least have one ranking that included all of the Guilds cards. I wonder if the next couple of months would be an appropriate time for that?

...I would be willing to contribute to this, even lead it (in honor of my departed FDSBFF) but I don't know if that's something people would want. Do people want this? Should I start a new thread to see who all is willing to contribute? Thoughts?

Qvist revealed everything except the new Potion cards list, which I don't expect changed very much.

Did he reveal the favorite cards list? I was looking forward to those :-\

In any case, if there isn't an outcry of people telling me this is a bad idea by later today I'll start a new thread with an outline for what needs done, volunteers to help, etc.

...or if someone else wants to head it up that's fine with me too.

I'm all for this. We got 55 submissions last time, and it would be great to get more. I think one thing that would really increase the number of lists submitted is to have some sort of website that helps you rank the lists. Qvist did this last time using SurveyMonkey, but the interface was clunky and didn't make it much easier. A site that compares 2 cards at a time and uses those comparisons for sorting is much more user-friendly, and would probably result in more submissions. I wrote a Python script to do this for the programmers in the crowd, but for everyone else a website would be great. Maybe we can cajole ragingduckd (or someone else with web skillz) into doing this.

I don't know anything about programming, but I'm doing something similar in the german forums. It is about which card you like the last. I always give some pairs of cards and you have to say which card you like less.
It is by far not as cool as the lists of Qvist and it is with no website, but only writing which card you like less. But anyways, if you are interested in, I can expand it to the forums here.

I can probably throw together such a page pretty quickly. But explain in more detail how you see it working? It just keeps showing 2 cards and you pick which of the 2 is better?

Isn't the favourites list still missing? Anyway, thanks for all the work; I'm looking forward to the 2014 edition.

PS: Could you update your "signature" with the missing 2013 links? Otherwise I won't find the $6 list any more  ;)

The signature already had too many links in it. I changed it now completely. But if you click on the 2013 thread there are all threads linked.
I plan to start the 2014 edition this weekend. *fingers crossed*

So how long until we've all had enough time to rank Adventures somewhat fairly?

I actually PM'd Qvist asking this not that long ago. In short he said not yet since it isn't available online, which is where most of the Dominion play occurs, so people have had far less experience with it so far.

So it's pretty clear that, even if Adventures comes out online in 2015, it won't be out long enough for people to fairly rank the cards.

Is there any chance we could do a Dominion Cards Lists 2015 edition with just the cards currently available online? I know there was only one card released since the 2014 list came out, but it could be interesting to see how the perception of card power has changed with the metagame.

I'm down with this if Qvist is. I agree about not ranking Adventures. It would be more of a predictions list if we tried to rank them, well, except for the play testers, I guess.

I'm all for ranking Adventures even if it isn't available online. These lists are all for our own amusement anyway, it's not like anyone's life is going to get ruined if they aren't perfectly accurate.

If nothing else it gives us something to laugh at 1-2 years from now, and laughing is fun.

I feel like if Qvist doesn't have time for this (it does seem like quite a lot of work) it might be cool if a group of people took up some of the responsibility for him. I agree that it would be funny to see our Adventures rankings prior to everyone online playing with them.

What I'm somewhat fearful of, is that many people may not have played Adventures at all. I'm all for ranking the Adventures cards as well, as I'm really curious what everyone else thinks of them compared to the older cards, but not if it means that we lose a significant amount of votes.

What happened with Guilds (and I think Dark Ages) was that voters could opt out of expansions they hadn't had the chance to play with yet.  I think that should continue with this one.

In addition to what wero says, I am frankly not 'afraid' of the results being polluted. It's not like the 2013 list is 100% objective or accurate either.

The only cards I would feel good about ranking would be Magpie and Guide, especially Magpie. It's good, very good.

I would feel good about get all of them ranked. I actually want to see hilarious over/underestimations of the cards too see how the perception shifts over time. Especially because it is really hard to determine the cards with completely new mechanics (reserve cards, haunted woods, etc.).

What I actually like is for the new ranking is a clarification whether we vote on "favourite" or "best" cards. It seems that both these terms were used for these rankings altough my ranking would look vastly different depending on what the criteria is.

I'm especially fond of Haunted Woods. It's one of the strongest $5 cards imo, about on par with Wharf, maybe even slightly stronger. It provides no benefit on the current turn, but +3 cards on the next turn is HUGE, and it has a (somewhat mediocre) attack to boot. If you can play one each turn, it's almost a Double Tactician engine without the discard. And if you have Villages (Port is awesome with it because you get two of them, but any Village works), you can stack them and get megaturns with huge hands more easily than ever.

I dunno, the extra action and extra buy that Tactician gives is also important. Especially since the extra action is required to play something like Vault and then another Tactician. Haunted Woods requires you to have Villages, and a source of +buy.

True, for it to be an engine that rivals Double Tactician it does kinda need a Village and +Buy. But then again, don't most engines? Besides, I haven't tried it, but I assume it's also a pretty decent Big Money enabler, again, like Wharf.

It's true that terminal draw + BM is really good, and Haunted Woods is not an exception to that. On the other hand, I think the comparison to Rabble is much more appropriate. Rabble is a card that makes you not want to green early -- Big Money greens earlier than other strategies, so you have to be really careful about playing Big Money with Haunted Woods around. Sure, there are events to counter it, and you can always just pass your turn with Haunted Woods where once you're pinned with Rabble it's much harder to get out, but Haunted Woods is an attack card, and it hits BM harder than most other strategies.

So Qvist doesn't seem to return to this board anytime soon and we all want new Dominion card rank lists.

Would anyone object if I were to organize something sometime this weekend or next week? I mean, I'm not exactly a long-time member or a top player here, but I've done stuff like this before and I like doing it. And someone's got to do it.

Hey guys. Sorry, I haven't been active on the forums lately.

So, you want to list the cards now as it seems. I wanted to wait until 2016.
I mean I want to do it again. But I don't know if I have the time now to do it. So I'm kind of torn.

The problem I currently have is that I'm not at home. I'm posting from my phone now. I will return next week.
So it would be nice if you guys would let me give one week to think about it. I will post next Saturday here again, okay?

Why would we wait until 2016? Adventures isn't coming out online anytime soon. Maybe the only reason I could think of is to include Summon as well, if we're ranking Events... or, yeah, if you have the time then but not now. Then again, many people want to see new lists...

Anyway, I'll wait until next week, no problem. :) Thanks for replying!

Qvist, if you feel like putting in the work to do this in 2015, I think it would be great and appreciated.

If it's a thing where you're willing to do it either now or in 2016, but not both, I would wait, but I think there's value to getting a snapshot of the Dominion metagame before Adventures makes it online.

I think it would be best for people to rank Adventures cards alongside the rest, even without a simulator. If we want to see how people rank the non-Adventures cards, we can just remove the Adventures cards from the final results (right?) and get a decent approximation. Two sets of data for the price of one!

If there's anything I could do to help, let me know; I'm a huge data nerd and I love this stuff.

Alright this is starting soon. I'll open the specific thread sometime next week.

2 things I like to mention:

1.) I'd love to use the web application again if possible. It makes things easier for me. I'll update it soon with the new Adventures cards and events.
If someone doesn't want to use the application, no problem. Anyone can send me his list via PM in text or a spreadsheet. Just make sure you include every card in each list.
I also plan to reset all the data, so it's easier for me to know who has updated the whole list. If someone wants to receive his list from last time, I have a backup copy and I can send him his list via PM, no problem.

2.) I plan to include the events with the cards because the reasoning behind the order in these lists is often "What do you buy if you have $x available?" It doesn't matter to you if you buy a event or a card. The only difference is that an event is a one-shot while a card can be used over and over again. The categories will basically stay the same, this means: $0-$2, $3, $4, $5, $6+, Potion cards, Prices, Knights, Ruins.

If anyone has a problem with one of those two things, let me know.

Sounds good!  But I think there was some interest in ranking the Events as a category on their own, as well as including them at their relevant price points?

I'm in favour of rating the events seperately. I find the mechanic different enough to warrant a different list.

Also, "what would you buy at this cost" doesn't really make sense  considering we're comparing P to 6P aswell.

That's awesome! I would have loved to do it as well, but what matters most is that it happens. I'm looking forward to voting! Thanks Qvist!

One thing though: frankly I disagree with ranking Events as kingdom cards, because, well, they're not kingdom cards. They just play a completely different role and playing with them at all is optional. I would just make a separate list ranking all Events.

Playing with any card is optional. Even playing Dominion at all is optional. I therefore conclude that no list is needed.

EDIT: Or, if you must have lists, every card should be put on its own list. I could be persuaded to put basic treasures and victory cards on the same list.

I feel that Events should be ranked with Kingdom cards because you are making a choice to spend your money on that event over a card for the effect of that event. Sometimes, cards such as Mandarin or Mint are bought solely for their on-buy effect.

I feel that maybe there should be an Event list, but I also want them ranked with the regular kingdom cards. From the games I played, if I spend $6 on Lost Arts over buying a Nobles, I still spent $6, so how does Lost Arts overall compare to a card like Nobles or Goons. I feel placing Events with Kingdom cards at their costs gives a better idea of the overall power level of said events in relations to cards of their costs. Sure we could rank Events on their own, but that does not give a good picture of how strong an Event truly is.

As an aside, if people want a list without events and just kingdom cards, we can still rank the events alongside the kingdom cards and just have two lists, one with events and kingdom cards and another list of just the kingdom cards without the events.

How about ranking all cards on a single list, but then posting the results with the cards sorted into multiple lists, possibly with overlap?  So, for example, you could have results for all the $3 cards including Events (which can be ignored by the people who want to ignore them), plus you could take the same data to compile a list of all the events whatever their cost.
