I used to be a 3.5-4.0 player back in high school/college, but now I haven't played in five or so years.  But it's still my favorite sport, especially when spectating in person.

To kick things off, Tennis Warehouse's Best of 2012: http://blog.tenniswarehouse.com/miscellaneous/4th-annual-t-dubbies-year-end-tennis-awards/  That Federer drop shot was a thing of beauty.

Yay, I'm a huge tennis fan.  I currently play at 4.0 level, after having not played for about 6 years due to shoulder troubles.  Love watching all the majors, early round play too.  I'm excited for another Aussie Open, and days on end of staying up to 5am!

I am very disappointed to learn that this scale is totally subjective.

The rating scale?  For league play you can self-rate in the beginning, but your record will dictate whether your rating should move up or down.  It will normalize as one plays more.

How does it go up or down?

The scale is mostly a way for people to find like hitting partners.  There's not much benefit to overstating your rating since that just means you get matched with people too good for you.

It's also not very precise (i.e., when I was at my 4.0 peak, it would have taken at least a year or two of training to get to 5.0).  So it's not like you can bluff your way into a higher rating.

For tournaments and such, you get assigned an NTRP rating by an "official NTRP verifier" and can appeal to get it upgraded or downgraded by another "official verifier".

I read the thread title and thought it's something about Ambassador. But, oh well...

It doesn't handle ragequits in tennis very well.  "Hang on, come back here!  I need to enter your mu and sigma into my spreadsheet before you leave!"

Oh hey! I just saw this thread, since I don't check non-dominion-related-general-discussion much. I'm a tennis player! Probably 4.5ish, I played in a 4.0 league in Illinois and was better than everyone there, but maybe here in SoCal I'm more like a standard 4.0, not sure.

Looking forward to the Australian open!

So Aussie Open has started.

I'm intrigued to find out what non-British people think of Andy Murray in general?

I think he will lose a lot of sympathy support now.  Man, you've got your Grand Slam now.

How can you ever root against The Fed?  Till the day he retires I don't think I could ever root for anyone but him.  Pre-2012 US Open, maybe you feel real bad for Andy Murray.  And I admit, I wanted Roddick to win the 2009 Wimbledon final.  But now I don't think there's anyone I'd choose over Fed.

He's been my one of my favorite player for years (also Gael Monfils).  I love his playing style, and I love watching him.

Super excited to watch them, and also Kei Nishikori, Tomic, and Dolgopolov.  Yay, tennis.

Looks like Djokovich is in trouble!

That will boost Federer and Murray a bit!
