What Went Wrong?

I just played this game.

My opponent opened with a TR. My god.

I opened Loan/Masquerade. Despite this, I ended the game with 4 Coppers and an Estate after 20 turns. I want to say bad shuffle luck. I only hit Copper with 1/5 Loan plays.

Was this the issue, shuffle luck, or is there a different cause I am missing.

I don't think you want a Loan in this kind of game. You also maybe should have bought an Embassy after your first Gold. You basically want to get to Platinum as fast as possible.

Loan is a much stronger trasher when you don't want any treasure in your deck (or very very little). As soon as you start putting better treasures into your deck, Loan is much more likely to act as a Copper which cycles your deck and discards one of your better treasures.

True, I knew I needed Embassy. I felt like killing 3-4 Coppers would make it a worthwhile investment, though.

I see where you're coming from. Sometimes getting Loan is a judgment call, but in general, in addition to the circumstances that Mic stated, Loan is a better investment in engines where even thinning out a few Coppers greatly aids consistency. In a BM game, especially when a powerful enabler such as Embassy is involved, the starting Coppers aren't bad at all when you're hunting for few valuable Treasures (such as Platinum or Gold) and using a bunch of not-so-valuable Treasures (such as Silver and Copper) to tide your hands over to $8/$9/$11.

You need to step up to 5 coin hands and buy a jester or embassy on turns 3 or 4. With the loan you couldn't do that, took silver/silver, and the loan subsequently drew silvers. If you create a potential problem like that in your deck then you sometimes get away with it and sometimes get punished, like this time.

Thanks for the feedback, peeps. Oddly enough, it makes me feel better knowing I played suboptimally and it wasn't all due to luck of the draw. Having said that, it's hard to tell in the log, but Masquerade wasn't my BFF, either.

Man, I still overbuy Loan. When Prosperity first came out, I may or may not have had a tendency to open Loan/Loan. ::)
