I got my 5 Goons faster, and I won the Apprentices (I think?) and protected better with Lighthouse, but somehow he was able to fire off the megaturn before I could. Is it just the trashing he's getting early from Salvager?

Well, you also opened with an Apprentice, so that can't possibly be it.

It's pretty hard to pinpoint exactly what went wrong given all of the cards flying around, but 1) Lighthouses don't draw you cards, and 2) I think trashing Apprentice with Apprentice early on was a misstep. You had sufficient economy to buy Goons (or just use Smugglers), so I'm pretty sure that the better play there would be to trash your Silver and then trash something else, preferably a Copper, with your other.

I noticed your opponent bought a Treasury. Maybe having a single Treasury helped him consistently buy pieces for his deck, in addition to being a 5-cost that could be fed to Apprentices later.
