request: Expand Understanding

Hi all. I frequently play Dominion on isotropic but I also play IRL with my family/friends. They range from beginning-intermediate players. They understand all of the basics, the difference between an engine and big money, etc. I would like to be able to clearly explain to them some of the more intermediate-advanced strategies such as the importance of trashing, the understanding of when to go green, how to analyze the kingdom for possible strategies, the importance of attacks and how they change the game, and the steps to building a strong deck so they can advance to a higher playing level. If there are any articles or discussions out there on teaching more advanced foundations you could let me know of that would be very helpful, or if anyone would be willing to write an article on explaining the importance of these techniques that would be great. Thanks a bunch!

First thing to do is to make sure they want that information. A lot of people either want to figure that out for themselves or simply don't really care if they ever figure it out.

If it turns out they do,

http://dominionstrategy.com/new-to-dominion/

has a lot of good articles about stuff like engine building.

So does

http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Strategy

Something like the importance of trashing can be explained clearly as explaining that every time that estate comes up in your hand, it could be a silver, or an important action card, or something you really need. If you have 6 money and an estate, and the estate could have been a silver instead, you would be able to get a province instead of a duchy. The estate is worth only one point and if getting rid of it allows you to buy even one more duchy or province, trashing it has already paid off. This is how I have explained it to my friends and it seems to have worked well.

Also, if they show a high level of interest at all the deeper strategy stuff, be sure to show them iso/this forum =)

I like to just play with my family without telling them any strategy:

Me (on turn 2): "I play 4 coppers and buy a Chapel."

Everyone else: "?? What's so good about the Chapel?"

Me (on turn 3): "I play my Chapel, trashing 3 Coppers and 1 Estate."

Everyone else: "??"

Ten turns later:

Everyone else: "I buy a Chapel."

And it's great whenever there is someone new, because then the whole thing goes all over again.

I thought this was going to be a request for an article about how to gain understanding of the card, Expand.

Oh that brings back painful memories of when I thought Thief was the best card in the game and Chapel, the worst.
