Is this broken?

Goop
Costs $3
Action - Attack
+$2, trash a card. each other player gains a goop

I suspect the +$2 is too strong. It might be more balanced at $1, but I don't know how to evaluate it, especially for 3 or 4 player games. Or maybe cost should go up to $4 to avoid double openings? Part of a custom set, but I'll spare posting every single card and just post the cards I think are especially tricky.

I programmed it into the simulator (I gave it a trash priority higher than Copper's, but lower than Estate's) and let 2 Goops + Money play against some other strategies:

Goop 41%  - BMU 53%
Goop 30% - BM Envoy 65%
Goop 57% - BM - Sea Hag 40%
Goop 57% - NGN - One Coppersmith to rule them all 40%
Goop 46% - COMBO - Watchtower Festival 50%

So Goop loses to the most basic of strategies, but wins against the mighty Sea Hag and gets a strong engine deck to its knees. The Chapel-started engines are a lot more resistant (though they slow down considerably).

Goop actually forces the game to dumb down which might not be a good feature for a card, but at least it's different!

Good clean design! I wouldn't change a thing.

Huh, wasn't expecting that at all. It makes sense it's strongest when you can capitalize on it (aka when you have few actions) but I wouldn't have predicted beating Sea Hag.

Any card that can mess with power strategies is worthwhile in my book.

Geronimoo - I'd be interested to see how Goop fares in 3 and 4 player games. I suspect it might exaggerate those results even more.

Out of curiosity, why is this defined as an attack? People are going to willingly purchase a Goop for $3, yet when it is handed out for free to the opponents, it is labeled as an attack? Imagine if it read the same, but instead of each opponent gaining a Goop, they gained a Silver instead. That doesn't feel too much like an attack.

There is no clear-cut definition of an attack, but it is worth noting that just because it affects other people doesn't mean it's an attack. Is the following card (that I made up in two seconds) an Action or Action-Attack?
Lender
Action (-Attack)
Cost: $3
+$2, Each opponent gains a copper.

I would say this is an attack, but why is receiving a copper necessarily a bad thing? I think I might define a given action as an attack if when the interaction (the part that could be seen as an attack) was removed, the card would not be worth buying for it's cost. That is not a very black-and-white definition, though. How would Goop fare if the "Each other player gains a Goop" was removed from the card? It is something that the sim could tell us, but I don't know for sure.

Tangent/rant over.

^It doesn't need to be a "bad thing" in order for it to be an attack. Thief trashing one of your coppers is actually quite helpful. I think the main thing the keyword "attack" does is allow the use of reactions that say "when an opponent plays an attack card". So if your opponent would potentially want to play a moat and doing so wouldn't make things too messy (like with possession) it should be called an attack.

Mountebank is also not much of an attack against a Gardens strategy because each attack gives this:

0.2VP * #Gardens - 1VP

So if the Gardener ends up with 6 Gardens, this means the Mountebank actually helped that player!

Same with Goop: against a lot of strategies this will feel like an attack, but it will actually help a few strategies...

I think the definition of an attack is a card that specifically says each other player does something that is mandatory. That's why Masquerade and Possession aren't attacks, Bishop isn't an attack, Vault isn't, but Theif and Pirate Ship are.

Strictly speaking the definition of an attack is a card that says "ATTACK" at the bottom.

...But for the most part, though, attacks are cards that, on average, weaken the opponents' decks or turns (in the the absence of strong counters), or at the discretion of the attacker. E.g., Torturer doesn't have a mandatory effect, but its effect will weaken the opponent's deck or turn in the absence of a strong counter to it. Meanwhile, Masquerade does have a mandatory effect.

Masquerade and Possession feel attacky, but they don't on average weaken the victim's deck or turn under ordinary circumstances—you can pass someone a bad card with Masquerade, but they can just as easily pass away a bad card at the same time; and Possession can't alter the composition of your opponent's deck barring corner cases with pseudo-trashing, and is just as likely to make them skip a bad hand as a good hand.

If I understand the simulator, the engine bots will never play Goop even if they have an action for it. They're treating it like a dead card.

I think Goop would rarely help against a human player, because they'd use it for its trashing ability and they'd know when to send it back at you to make your actions collide.

Since the bots only have buy rules and no play rules, the cards will dictate when they are played and not the bots. This means Goop will always be played if the player has an action left.

Here's a sample game log:

_Goop(Plr 2) wins this game!!

BM - Sea Hag(Plr 1) has 32 points and took 23 turns
