Slow-mo Tens10n (a x5 submission game--forming)
« on: December 05, 2012, 06:46:54 pm »

There are 10 boxes. Box 1 is worth 1 point, Box 2 is worth 2 points, and so on up to Box 10, worth 10 points.

There are 10 players. Each player has 10 chits, and places one per round in a Box.

To join the game, post here and then send me a PM assigning your 102 chits for the current round to the 10 boxes. At the end of the game, if you have put the most chits in a box, you win that box and its points! If there is a tie for the highest number of chits, no one gets the box. (Note: If you don't post here and send a PM, you will not be signed up - I will take the first 10 who do both and submit a valid round 1 assignment.)

Whoever gets the most total points wins. New tiebreaker rule: whoever wins the most boxes wins ties between players finishing with the same number of points. If players are still tied, they rejoice in their shared victory!

Some variants (not all are compatible with one another):

  • You are allowed to place more than one chit on your turn.  If it is your turn and you have no chits to place, you automatically pass.  If you have at least one chit, you must place it.
  • You may not select the same box twice (if you have already placed chits in a box, you cannot put more chits in that same box).
  • Turn order goes forward and back, like Settlers opening placement.
  • You have X Passes, such that you do not yet place a chit.
  • You have X chances to REMOVE chits that you have placed.

Some of these are interesting variants.  For this game, I'm going to focus on a 10-round, place 1 chit per round variant.  I'm interested in playing multiple variations on this interesting game.

I think it will be interesting to see other people's choices and react to them.  Maybe I'm wrong.  It's an experiment.

Or, instead of fully committing to turn order, it could be something like:

- There are multiple rounds that function like the original game (I suggest 3).
- Each round you get some number of chits to place.  Intermediate results shown between each round.
-- Possibly reward points after each round as well, with multipliers for the later rounds.
- Option to move chits from a box in a round, by paying a penalty.
- Option to withhold chits (not placing them) by paying a penalty.

This is what I'm trying to do, but with 10 rounds.

More variants...

Award the points to whoever has the highest non-tied chit placement.  For example, if Alice and Bob both bid 5 chits each for box 10 and Charlie bids 3 chits for box 10, Charlie wins the box and all 10 points.

Or, split the points among the tied winners.

Also, for tie-breaking, you could award the win to whoever put the most chits in Box 1 (or if necessary, Box 2, or Box 3, etc.).

Ahhh.

My original idea was actually going in turn order.  Like, you place some chits, then I place some chits, then Joe places some chits, then you again (for a 3p game).

That would be quite slow though.

Oh. Are you showing chits placed at the end of each round?

This one will be coming eventually (in the non-slow version) as "Classic Tens10n". (We've tried a couple more variants in the past, but this was the most popular.)

Not sure.

By the way, I think putting 2 per round would be better.

I've been thinking about that, and I agree.  Is everyone who is currently playing in agreement with this?  You may amend your original PMs as you will.

just so y'all know, i'm going to be putting all mine into box 10

This is sneaky.  In the one-per-round version, all you need to do is get two into box 10 without anyone joining you.  Then you can start  investing elsewhere and you can always defend if someone tries to steal 10 away from you.

In the 2-per version, you need 3 to secure... heh. :P
