I liked the show.

The show was cute when I was kid.  Now it's goddamn annoying and Ash needs to die in a fire.  The games are pure awesome though.  Black & White may have produced the trash bag Pokemon, but it also produced Scolipede.  That'll do, Nintendo.  That'll do.

+1 for reference to Babe.  Nostalgia'd hard.

...I've actually never seen Babe.  At some point I probably should.

Oh, okay, well if you haven't played Majora's Mask, Wind Waker, or Skyward Sword, you are entitled to that opinion about Zelda. The character development is heartrending.

I didn't play XI. I gave XII a good long shot, and didn't like it. I gave XIII 3 hours of my life that I will never get back, and was pretty disappointed.

Really liked VII, IX, and X though.

I loved some of the Zeldas: Link to the Past for the SNES and Skyward Sword especially.
I mean, I loved them as the games they were and the gameplay they offered, I didn't care much about the story, in fact I try to skip as much dialogue as I can.

Final Fantasy just isn't for me. I hate running around and then *BOOM* surprise! Fight this enemy. Didn't quite bother me in Lufia though, but then you had dungeons where you could actually see the monsters.

Cyndaquil is just a little confused and facing the wrong way.

Also, the Bulbasaur and Piplup are shiny.

They aren't actually my favourite pokemon.  Well, Cyndaquil and its line is one of my favourites for aesthetics.  Bulbasaur is my favourite gen I starter and Piplup is my favourite gen IV starter, though it's close between all of them.  Empoleon is awesome for its typing.  Turtwig is adorable and Torterra is an amazing design -- he is a freaking continent.  Look at this.  Chimchar and its line is cool too.  My least favourite of the three, but still awesome.

I didn't actually play through gen III originally (I have a copy of Emerald now; still unfinished) and I actually don't much like any of the gen V starters.

It's hard for me to nail down my favourite overall pokemon though.  Chandelure and Flygon are high up on my list.  I love my paraflinch Togekiss in SoulSilver.  I am a big fan of Ferrothorn just because I'd always thought that Grass/Steel would be a great typing (for gen VI, I am hoping for Ghost/Steel).  I could go on.

I remember really liking Pokemon Stadium, maybe on GameCube?  Is that even canon?  I liked the show, too.

As for Zelda vs. FF, Secret of Mana is the best.  I did love Ocarina of Time, though.

Then I would probably put in a few Zelda games in the rankings before going back to FF games.

I have not played the last couple of Zelda either though, but unless they have stopped doing the annoying 'hit the enemy this way three times' combat system and making them so easy to finish (in that its just 'time' not skill level as to how well you do)

Althoguh thats true of all new games these days. Too easy to complete.

Well, Diablo III hardcore wasn't any fun with all the server crashes in the early days.

I did play DII hardcore once, but when I died pretty early, I knew it wasn't for me.
I mean, I like a challenge sure, but I don't want to spend hours for nothing.

Yeah, server crashes are bad. But perma death makes most single player games more fun, IMO.

Where's the challenge if death has no outcome? The challenge then is repetitive learning......yay for school!
(Obviously waaay over simplified there)

And you have raised another problem with the game industry today, releasing games before they are fully operational because of the pressure and hype and the need to claw money back

If you haven't played the last few, you should withhold judgment! The combat system is just one factor that has improved by leaps and bounds in the last few games.

FF-III was better than VII, but only because of how it stood out against the games of it's time. Much like Chrono Trigger or the afore mentioned Secret of Mana.

Likewise, Xenogears is quite possibly better than anything mentioned in this topic yet. It's graphics weren't leagues above the competition, but the story... Oh man. It took the entire RSP sub-forum and made a coherent, phenomenal, heart rending story that actually took the time to delve into the subconscious of human nature at all levels. It sought to explain the beliefs and desires of humanity to not only become rich or powerful, but to become legends - godlike figures. It explored Social constructs, how the rich look down on the poor. It explored insanity, and what that really is and means...

Absolutely hands down the best game of it's genre I've ever played. The sequels (technically prequels) that came out years later held nothing on the original however - largely because the original left no stone unturned.

I quite liked the original Suikoden game I think it was, with the 108 characters to recruit.

But seriously, if we are talaking RPGs, then Ultima 5 is the greatest game ever.

Proper real world exploration, hundreds of characters to talk too. No set quest objectives and a totally immersive world.

It's really hard to compare the two series, but in my opinion the best of Zelda beats the best of FF. Lately, FF has been getting worse at a much faster pace than Zelda has been getting worse. And this is coming from someone who didn't think FF13 was a total disaster. My biggest problem with Zelda lately is how safe the series has been playing it. I want another radical game like Majora's Mask. You can't fault Square Enix for trying to make FFs different, even if some of the games fall flat on their faces.
