Another What's Missing? puzzle

I think this one is pretty easy. What one card is missing from this list?

Ambassador
Potion
Thief

Honorable mention: Masquerade.

EDIT: And now, Squire! And I guess Band of Misfits?

Hehehehehe, I thought about making this exact puzzle myself but didn't because I didn't think it had enough cards! I won't spoil it for others, not even in a spoiler.

Ambassador/Thief/Masquerade seems obvious at first, but man, Potion?

I'll think about it :D

ed: Ambassador/Thief/Masquerade is actually the complete list for some other thing I have in mind. No other card I could add to it. And Potion doesn't remotely fit, of course.

Jester!

I've been really bad at thinking about these puzzles so I'm glad to finally figure one out ;D

edit: OK I'm back to being pretty certain this is right. I'll de-mention a bunch of cards that only seemed related because I had a much broader category in mind to begin with.

I agree it has to be Jester, but I don't get why Masquerade is merely "honorable mention" but Ambassador isn't.

I think op has in mind ways you can gain philosopher's stone and masquerade doesn't gain.

Upgrade, Remodel, Expand? Doesn't fit.

Right, gotcha.  I figured it was how to get Phil Stones but forgot about the word "gain".

Surely Potion doesn't do it by itself then. You need Potion + $3. Another way is with Remodel-type cards + other cards with Potion costs.

Jester is right, of course.

You're all more or less circling around the correct explanation of the unifying factor.

The only cards that can potentially add a Philosopher's Stone to your deck without losing any cards in the process. This includes Jester of course.

Vidicate: Not quite; you've forgotten about Mint. (And of course, as Jimmmmm points out, Potion alone won't get you a Philosopher's Stone.)

Now that we've confirmed the answer, here's the category: Cards that can enable someone who has never owned a Potion-cost card to gain their first Potion-cost card during the current turn. Masquerade is considered a mere honorable mention because it doesn't cause "gains". The word "never" is key here. If we relax it even to the point of saying the player didn't own a Potion-cost card at the start of the turn (but might have at some point in the past), then Upgrade, Remodel, Remake, and a host of others must be added to the list. Exercise for the reader or the OP: figure out why that's the case!

Guided: exactly right. (And your "exercise for the reader" followup question is exactly right as well. The answer involves shenanigans, of course.)

Some really gory Possession      interactions would accomplish that.

You'd have to have one already though, and Possessions cost Potions

It's still possible to make it work! Hint: Possession isn't a Duration card.

This was about dropping the "never", or? In this case:

You could play a throned Posession, with your opponents turn swindle/saboteur your own Posession to nothing cause of empty piles/no cheaper Potioncost-cards, and buy another Potion-cost card, which you gain. Then you forget about the TR, which was there for some other solution which didn't work out...

DStu: Not quite, since you still need a Potion in order to buy your new Potion-cost card. So the answer is: TR/Possession and then reshuffle; on opponent's turn 1 Saboteur your own Possession, which was your only potion-costing card, to nothing; on opponent's turn 2 Remodel an Apothecary into a Golem (or whatever). Thus a play of Remodel allowed you to gain a potion-costing card on a turn at the beginning of which you didn't have any potion-costers. Which is why the stipulation in Guided's solution.

Exactly ;D

I had Bishop in mind rather than Saboteur but the effect is the same.

...So, what do you think, does Haggler count here?

Argument for: Play Haggler, Silver, Potion. Buy a Golem. Use Haggler's power to gain an Apothecary. Since Haggler's power is on-buy, the Apothecary hits your discard pile before the Golem does, so strictly speaking it is Haggler that has just gained you your first potion-costing card.

Argument against: In order for Haggler to be able to gain you a potion-costing card, you have to play a Potion also on the same turn. In that sense it is Potion, not Haggler, that is actually enabling you to gain a potion-costing card. Consider this characterization of Ambassador, Jester, Potion, and Thief: "It is necessary for at least one of these to be played in order for someone to gain their first potion-costing card on the current turn." Haggler does not add to that list.
