Should Silver be included in the next Card Ranking List?
« on: December 02, 2012, 09:58:47 pm »

I think we should include Silver in the 3's, just because of the dreaded "silver test"

Maybe we ought to include Silver in the 4's as well then.

Maybe we ought to.  Just maybe.

I figured this was easy enough to put to a vote.

edit: I should note that I'm not in charge of the ranking list at all, I can't guarantee this poll will have any outcome on how it's done, ultimately that's up to Qvist.

Poor Gold feels left out.

If we're going there, should Platinum also have a chance to be included? And Potion? And what about Victory cards?

I voted No. I could probably be persuaded to go either way, though.

I voted no too. I think the list should be just kingdom cards. It might be worth making a note of the silver test as part of the overall $3 card rankings, but it shouldn't make the list. Being in every game, silver is the ultimate "depends on the kingdom" card.

This seems like a strange thing to say given how often you buy silver in Dominion, but isn't silver almost by definition the worst $3 card? My understanding of the Silver Test is that every card should, at least in theory, sometimes pass it, and that you only buy silver when you literally have no better options. So many cards are so situational that this happens a lot of the time, but I feel like silver can't be ranked against kingdom cards because it's whole purpose is to be a "safe" option to spend $3-$5 on.

I don't think that's the right lesson to take away at all.  The Silver test, to me, is about opportunity cost.  A lot of times there is a card that would make a pretty nice addition to your deck.  But not as nice a contribution as Silver at the time!  The Silver test is about how Silver is often over looked, probably because it is so simple looking and always available.

Saying that you buy something when there is no better option is equivalent to saying that you buy something when it is the best option.  And so you should.  It's true of all cards, not just Silver. :P

So, I'm not sure if I understood this poll right!? This is a joke right, to put Silver in the $5 list?
Anyway, I asked this already in this thread.
The consensus was not to include Silver and Gold. And that's what I'm planning to do.

Are you guys nuts?!

I can sort of see the idea ranking Silver in the $3, but I disagree.  The idea of ranking it in the $4/$5 is asinine.

Well I just thew up the 4 and 5 options because the original "silver test" applied to cards costing 3-5 and the silver test was the reason including silver in the rankings was brought up at all. Did not expect 5 to get any votes though.

If you're going to include Silver on the $4 and $5 lists why not other $3s, or anything under the $n of the list? Maybe we should have a list of $5/2 buys that includes things like Village/Moat or Hamlet/Watchtower.

This is not a horrible idea, other than the fact that you get really long lists. But if it just amounts to merging your lists, it might be kind of interesting for not that much extra work. You'll get discussions about what's better between the power cards at a wider range of pricepoints.

I still disagree with putting Silver in any list because the fact that it's included in every game causes it to potentially require a different criteria for rating how good it is.

I don't see any reason not to include it on the list...if you want the ranking without silver, you can easily remove that data and run the analysis that way, whereas the reverse is not true.

Sure, and Nate Silver will get the top spot for each of $3, $4 and $5.

No.  No.  No.  No.  No.

Haven't we already had this discussion?  Kingdom cards only.  No base cards, no asterix cards, no Shelters, no Ruins.

...you only buy silver when you literally have no better options.

Isn't that true of every card? For any given card, you buy it when there are no better options (because that means the card you're buying is the best option)?

The strongest argument I can see for including Silver is that it provides something of a baseline for comparing other $3 cards.  It seems particularly useful for new players because Silver provides a frame of reference for discussions about $3 cards and a number of fundamental concepts in Dominion (e.g., opportunity cost).
