Has there been any word from SirSlugma or zaubererer regarding the status of their match?  I'm supposed to play the winner and would like to get something scheduled for this week since I don't have a ton of free time.

zaubererer and I are playing this afternoon, we had difficulty getting our match together due to time zone difference, and I believe he requested for a time extension for our match.

Buggy vs Orange - being played tonight

Maybe.  We seem to keep missing each other.  I'm in Secret Chamber on Iso waiting, but need to go to sleep at 10 EST.  Not sure what to do if we don't finish up the match tonight.

buggy has been more than understanding but I've just been way too busy, and couldn't catch up to him in time yesterday.  We had five good games earlier in the week and he was up 3-2, so he is a worthy winner.  Call Game 6 a forfeit and advance him 4-2.  My apologies to buggy and all for not being able to get the last one/two games in.

Round 1 Results: scryordie (50) vs. Krachan

50 4 - 2 Krachan

Some interesting games in this round. Both Krachan and I acknowledged that we played sub optimally in many games, and thought it would be interesting to see some great engine builders play these sets.

Game 1: scryordie 33 - Krachan 31

The board seemed to have some engine potential, especially aided by the black market. We both try to go for the grandmarkets, which I feel was a trap in this game. Our decks end up fairly terminal heavy and the game lasts fairly long I manage to get the win aided by first seat advantage and a Horn of Plenty from the black market deck.

Game 2: scryordie 50 - Krachan 49

This being a Colony game, big money seems to be a pretty poor choice. Minion stands out as the natural engine component, but a Minion deck is hurt by the lack of villages and non terminal money. Still, we both go for Minions, but I use some early buys on Islands, which turns out to be a huge blunder. My opponent's Minion attacks and my terminal Islands clog up my deck and make it nearly impossible to pick up Minions. Krachan gets the split, I think for sure I am done for.

I pick up some Platinum and I am forced to break the PCR. Fortunately, the best my opponent can do the next turn is to Expand an Estate into a Duchy. I get a Colony the next turn and get a very lucky win.

Game 3: scryordie 31 - Krachan 50

Engine potential is lacking in this board, and we both try to go for some sort of big money. I am attracted to Tunnel, as I know that the 2VP that each ones gives can be hard to beat in a Province game. I use Courtyard and Harvest as my activators. Krachan goes for some standard Courtyard BM. My deck takes too long before it gets going and Krachan is able to grab a huge lead in Provinces, and he pretty cleanly closes this game out.

Game 4: scryordie 52 - Krachan 11

There are no villages on this board, but that doesn't stop it from being a big engine game (in retrospect Double Jack wouldn't have been back as well). Grand Markets, Conspirators, Horn of Plenty, and Minions!

Krachan goes for the Grand Market Conspirator deck (I feel he buys too few Minions, however). I am attracted to the Horn of Plenty megaturn (my favorite strategy in the game!) Spice Merchant is an amazing activator for HoP, and my deck gets rolling quickly.

I am able to get 5 Provinces on turn 16, which puts me in a command position. Krachan starts to green the next turn, but it is too late. I triple Province the turn after to seal the deal. This is one of the games I am most proud of

Game 5: scryordie 32 - Krachan 35

We both go for a Swindler opening and look to transition to some kind of money strategy. I aim to aide mine with Menagerie, Nobles, and Festivals, as does my opponent.

The midgame goes in my favor, as I am able to get some good swindles. I turn his Nobles into Harems, and I have a much bigger engine as I begin to green. Unfortunately, the piles begin to run very fast. I get some bad draws my last turns and am unable to grab the Provinces which would have put me soundly ahead.

Game 6: scryordie 34 - Krachan 13

We both open Silver/Black Market and aim to grab early Witches while picking up some power houses from the Black Market (Villages and Ambassador). Krachan gets unlucky and can't get a Witch on his first reshuffle. I squander this advantage by going for a somewhat schizophrenic Scrying Pool strategy. I think the Pool was a sound plan, but I got too many terminals too soon. The midgame turns into a slog of poorly optimized and heavily cursed decks. Three piles are obviously running, and I am able to pick up the essential Vineyards before closing out the game by buying the last Nobles.

Thanks for the good games, Krachan, I hope to see you around in the future.

Round 2 : adjourned at DG 3 : glengarry 3

DG 6  : 16 glengarry http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/10/game-20121210-121220-3972e27a.html
DG 40: 42 glengarry http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/10/game-20121210-123352-c85bb817.html
DG 60: 54 glengarry http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/10/game-20121210-124824-7f659617.html
DG 54: 29 glengarry http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/10/game-20121210-125935-955abce5.html
DG 17:  9  glengarry http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/10/game-20121210-131103-878db122.html
DG 25: 27 glengarry http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/10/game-20121210-133351-d81d4396.html

Game 1 - Hunting party, swindler and horn of plenty: I was planning to take immediate hunting parties then take a horn of plenty later if the deck was working, but cut my plan to a very simple treasure deck once nothing was working. Glengarry went straight for talisman based variety and he very quickly had more assets in the deck.
Game 2 - Familiar/masquerade start with king's courts coming in. I went for a tighter deck looking deck with some good things from vaults but it never really happened and in fact just fed Glengarry's bigger tribute based deck.
Game 3 - This is a peculiar game where there's a delicate balance between an expanding gardens deck and a tight ambassador deck with ventures. I thought that Glengarry was going for the gardens at the start but in fact he took a second ambassador with the bureaucrat and that persuaded me to regear for a bigger gardens deck. It was still a pretty even call but I think I would have lost clearly in a province war.
Game 4 - Wharf engine. I get nice draws that are hard to beat.
Game 5 - We both are looking to trim down, get grand markets through silver and remakes, and add shanty town/torturer for attacks. I get bad draws at the start and miss entirely out on the torturers but glengarry gets bad draws at the end and that lets me sneak a three pile win.
Game 6 - We play this fairly similarly with lots of good 5 cost cards here. Again I've got a tighter deck with less copper but glengarry is able to draw through it with warehouses. There's a tight endgame and he comes up with a stylish finish, trashing a feast for the last city and then using the new +1 coin from the cities to give exactly the coins to buy out the last two feasts.

Lost 4-3-2 to zaubererer. I think my isotropic inexperience got the better of me as I made a notable misclick, some stupid choices, and some novice mistakes throughout.  Though I somehow managed to get my best wins with alt VP, usually one of my weakest areas when I play in-person!

Game 1 (zaubererer 39 - SirSlugma 34): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/10/game-20121210-130442-f97c7398.html
Pretty similar strategies here, not sure if my Crossroads were ever worth it.  I think the lack of worthwhile cards at $5 made his early Talisman a good call.

Game 2 (SirSlugma 39 - zaubererer 39): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/10/game-20121210-131934-5b17f2d2.html
Wharf-FG mirror.  First player advantage helped me take the lead here, though the Bazaar was a poor choice.  Turn 7 could've been double Fool's Gold, but my inexperience with FG caused me to ignore that option until after I had already made the purchase.  Oops.

Game 3 (zaubererer 52 - SirSlugma 52): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/10/game-20121210-132952-14433dca.html
Hunting Party with Colonies.  Thought Chancellor worked better than his Crossroads, and allowed me to catch up to him despite his 5/2 start and more HPs.  I took the draw when I had the chance.

Game 4 (SirSlugma 59 - zaubererer 42): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/10/game-20121210-133732-a7abe519.html
DoubleJack game, thought I played this decently well though I'm not sure I should've ever trashed my last Estate turn 14.  I suppose it worked out for me anyway.

Game 5 (zaubererer 27 - SirSlugma 21): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/10/game-20121210-134844-d796b2cb.html
I stupidly went after Scrying Pool without even looking at the board.  I think I should've been crushed but somehow managed to hang around for a while.  I think I blew it turn 16, where I had a lead and went after the Ironworks to try to end the game rather than taking a Duchy for points.

Game 6 (SirSlugma 44 - zaubererer 42): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/10/game-20121210-135616-a2aad727.html
Gardens vs...Haggler-BM?  I think I got fairly fortunate with Swindler and I gambled a little bit going after the Gardens.  I probably hit them too hard and too soon, but winning the split 8-0 is pretty strong in any situation.

Game 7 (zaubererer 42 - SirSlugma 17): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/10/game-20121210-140618-cc31b3ef.html
Ambassador war, got creamed and had no chance to catch up.  I'm curious if there's something I could've done here to have not gotten stomped or if I was doomed by the luck of the game.  I feel like if I kept it simple with Envoy BM or something I would've gotten crushed by estates and curses by his slimmed deck.

Game 8 (SirSlugma 50 - zaubererer 38): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/10/game-20121210-141630-095daec5.html
Vineyards vs. IGG rush.  I feel like Mountebank and Familiar weakened the strength of the IGG rush, so I went for an early Familiar and hoped to transition into Ironworks/Vineyards, which worked quite well.  I didn't balance the Potions quite right, but I thought my strategy was sound.  This was a fun one.

Game 9 (zaubererer 38 - SirSlugma 24): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/10/game-20121210-142320-052f63af.html
Wharf-FG mirror. (again)  zaubererer had 5/2 and I was pretty much done there.  YW was probably a mistake but I felt like I needed to gamble to have any chance of catching up.

Not a long adjournment for glengarry and I. We played a final game which was sadly a university/city blowout where I get nice draws and power ahead.

DG 30 : 12 glengarry http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/10/game-20121210-144426-ab483d31.html

Shame about that last game as we had a good tight competitive series throughout with plenty of close finishes. Thanks for the series Lee and hope you get a nice holiday.

Round 2

() | (_) ^/     4 - 1     Mad Dog

=====================
Game 1:  (I didn't grab the log)
paddyodoors 1 - 9 Mad Dog

This was a Sea Hag - IGG - Colony game.  I never once saw $5.  Lost the curse split with Mad Dog going for IGG on $5.  Piles on Curses, Estates, and Hamlets.  Ugh.  Needless to say, no Colonies.

=====================
Game 2: (I didn't grab the log)
paddyodoors more - less Mad Dog

This was a fun one, a new opening for me: Fool's Gold/Horn of Plenty.  Mad Dog went for Fool's Gold/Contraband, eventually picking up University and Watchtower.  I figured I'd get a Merchant Ship or two after the FGs were gone, but there was no need -- I won the Fool's Gold, and gained Watchtowers for draw and top-decking of new treasure (or other Watchtowers).  Once I hit 44 points, he resigned (not enough points left on the board to catch up).

=====================
I'll comment on games 3-5 later.  Since I have the logs for them, I don't need to try to do a memory dump like I did for the first two.

Game 3: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/11/game-20121211-105310-b7eea1f3.html
=====================
Game 4: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/11/game-20121211-110901-9a733126.html
=====================
Game 5: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/11/game-20121211-112347-f2081049.html
=====================

All in all, Mad Dog was a solid opponent, flexible with scheduling, and courteous to boot.  10/10 would play again (even game 1!).

More to come later, I'll make a new post.

Round 2

Drab Emordnilap 4--1 luliin

First off, I want to thank luliin; I was tense the whole way through this match. All games were identical start/point counter/no veto. The games:

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/11/game-20121211-150833-c358f4e6.html
cards in supply: Bishop, Farming Village, Oracle, Pawn, Potion, Remake, Spy, Thief, Tunnel, University, and Warehouse

First weird thing: Nothing costs more than $4. I get to go first on a board dominated by Warehouse/Tunnel, but we both open Remake. I get to Remake two Estates on turn 4, where luliin is stuck trashing two Copper. I gain three Golds on turn 8, and four on turn 10, and I'm well off into buying Provinces. luliin tries to use Bishop to make up the spread, but it's not fast enough.

Drab Emordnilap 53--40 luliin

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/11/game-20121211-151031-5ecb8aa5.html
cards in supply: Adventurer, Council Room, Develop, Explorer, Jester, Mine, Minion, Philosopher's Stone, Pirate Ship, Potion, and Trading Post

We started without identical starting hands and point counter, and agree to redo the same board. This link is just for completeness.

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/11/game-20121211-151603-943db2f2.html
cards in supply: Adventurer, Council Room, Develop, Explorer, Jester, Mine, Minion, Philosopher's Stone, Pirate Ship, Potion, and Trading Post

I'm somewhat lost on this board. The opposite of the previous board; almost everything costs $5. I think about Minion but decide to do Trading Post into Council Room Big Money. luliin takes advantage and ends up with 8 of the Minions. We end up splitting the victory cards straight down the middle, and I end up with the loss because of the one Estate I trashed to Trading post.  :-[

Drab Emordnilap 42--43 luliin

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/11/game-20121211-152458-4ceddef4.html
cards in supply: Bureaucrat, Chapel, City, Familiar, Goons, Great Hall, Horse Traders, Library, Mine, Potion, and Shanty Town

The first real 'engine board'. I shudder because I fear Goons, and I fear Familiar luck. Sure enough, I draw Potion with three Estates on turn 3... but Chapel saves the day, trashing the Estates. luliin's Potion falls to turn 5, and I win the Curse split 6/4 (with the curses being trashed out shortly afterwards). That turns on my Cities, however, and I start drawing my (small) deck every turn. luliin buys the first Goons on turn 10, but doesn't play it until turn 12, and by that point I have enough Cities to draw out from under it. I start loading up on Cities and Goons, and end up 3 piling on turn 19.

Drab Emordnilap 138 -- 2 luliin

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/11/game-20121211-153936-98983eb9.html
cards in supply: Ambassador♦, Black Market, Golem, Horn of Plenty, Horse Traders, Inn, Possession, Potion, Stash, Swindler, Vault, and Witch

Note: No one bought Black Market this game.

We both open Ambassador x2, but mine stick together like glue the first few shuffles. luliin pulls ahead, and I don't get above $4 until turn 13. luliin buys a Province on turn 16 with a much richer deck than mine, and I figure the only way I can catch up at this point is Possession. I buy Potion on turns 15 and 17, and buy a Possession on turn 18. Between Possession, Golem into Possession, and Inn shuffling them back in, I manage to make luliin pass me a Gold, 3 Duchies, and 3 Provinces (as well as returning a 4th Province). After 40 turns, the game finally ends.

Drab Emordnilap 54--32 luliin

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/11/game-20121211-154715-cc112afe.html
cards in supply: Bank, Coppersmith, Hamlet, Haven, Hoard, Island, Loan, Swindler, Trading Post, and Walled Village

Another set without any real engine, Swindlers rule the day. Silvers become Loans, Islands become Coppersmiths, Trading Posts become Duchies, and even Golds become Hoards. Nothing is safe! I consider opening Swindler x2, but play it safe with Swindler/Silver, since I'm up in the match. I buy a Walled Village on turn 8, figuring I'd have too many terminals thanks to Swindler, but it rides the top of my deck until it lets me combo two Coppersmiths to hit $6 for a Duchy on turn 20. I hit a Duchy late with Swindler, which gives me some more wiggle room in terms of buying the last couple Provinces.

Drab Emordnilap 42--35 luliin

Again, thanks luliin for the tight games, and if games 3 and 4 weren't in a tournament, I would apologize for weeks. Best of luck to you in the other brackets!

UPDATE:
Round 2

() | (_) ^/     4 - 1     Mad Dog
...

I'll comment on games 3-5 later.  Since I have the logs for them, I don't need to try to do a memory dump like I did for the first two.

Game 3: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/11/game-20121211-105310-b7eea1f3.html

SUPER super quick game.

Kingdom: Bridge, City, Explorer, Fool's Gold, Lighthouse, Masquerade, Outpost, Quarry, Tunnel, and Walled Village
#1 Mad Dog opening: Bridge / Fool's Gold
#2 paddyodoors opening: Bridge / Masquerade

Now, of note is that we were just coming off of a game where I beat Mad Dog with tons of Fool's Gold.  He opened Bridge, which I think is the only/best Fool's Gold enabler on this board.  So, I'm thinking if there is going to be a run on FGs, I should go City which is a HUGE enabler for Bridge.  I take a risk, opening Bridge/Masq so that I have the ability to pick up FGs and trash at the same time, getting set for the City rush.  I luck out BIG time, buying two FGs and playing my Masq to full effect on Turns 3 and 4 respectively.

Mad Dog wins FGs 7/3, but loses Cities 3/7.  I pick up 3 more Bridges.

On Turn 10, I end the game by piledriving Estates along with 3 Province buys, winning 27-14.  Much of the credit is due to my luck coming off of my high-risk opening.

=============================

Game 4: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/11/game-20121211-110901-9a733126.html

Quickly turns into a bit of a slog.

Kingdom: Coppersmith, Ghost Ship, Grand Market, Island, Minion, Moat, Scheme, Scout, Stash, and Tunnel
#1 Mad Dog opening: Silver / Silver
#2 paddyodoors opening: Island / Silver

I look at this board, and see Minion/Grand Market.  Island is generally a bad opening because it can really hurt you from being able to hit $5, which is crucial here.  But I take the chance that the one Silver will get me to $5, and I opt for the very light pseudo-trashing of Island (along with the modest VP gain).  For the second game in a row, luck pays off and I get a $5 hand on T3 and a $4/Island/Estate hand on T4.

We each hit $5 on T3, but he goes for a Ghost Ship while I go for a Minion.

We end up splitting the Minions 5/5, and neither of us gains Grand Markets very quickly.  With Scheme, I'm able to topdeck a Moat every once in a while, blocking his attacks (unless it was Minion and I didn't like my hand that particular turn).  Scheme, however, is generally bad in Minion games.

5/5 Minion splits are hard since it really isn't enough money for one player to really have a Minion-only engine.  Eventually, I get some Tunnels and they start to generate Gold for me due to the discarding from both of our Minions.

With the Tunnels and Islands and then Provinces & Duchies in my deck, I decide to buy a couple of Scouts, which actually seemed to help a bunch (see turn 23 -- gaining two more Golds right before my last reshuffle).

We have a super close game, neither one of us able to end it with the last pile (Grand Markets) due to how close in score we were.  In the end, with the rewards of my Tunneling (Gold), I am able to get the last Grand Market and buy a Tunnel for a two-point victory (33-31).

=============================

Game 5: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/11/game-20121211-112347-f2081049.html

Crazy attack board.

Kingdom: Ambassador, Bank, Chapel, Embassy, Festival, Goons, Hunting Party, Jester, Margrave, and Smithy
#1 Mad Dog opening: Chapel / Silver
#2 paddyodoors opening: Silver / Ambassador

Oof.  Wow.  Ambassador or Chapel?  Goons/Jester/Margrave?  Festivals, as the only village, are going to be key.  But Hunting Party is just so strong at finding you that one card that would make this turn perfect, am I right?

I am worried about Ambassador -- if he gets some good Chapeling in and starts on the engine, my Ambassador isn't going to really hurt his deck.  If he gets an Ambassador and I don't get good Chapeling, then I'm going to have a terrible deck.  I think this situation is actually REALLY swingy, and the fact that all the components for some really nice attack-based engine are sitting right there at $5 makes me very nervous.

I open Silver to see what he pairs with his Chapel opening.  He pairs it with Silver, so I go for attack (Ambassador), hoping that by luck he won't be able to keep up with the trashing.  Turn 3 gets me a Hunting Party (so as to see Ambassador more).

At first I think I fail -- my T4 has no Ambassador, so that has missed the reshuffle.  I decide to "double down" on junking his deck, so I buy another Ambassador.  T5?  BOTH OF THEM.  WITH NO ESTATES IN HAND.  Oh my.  Meanwhile, across town, his deck has been doing this:

T1: buy Chapel
T2: buy Silver
T3: Trash 2 Estates, buy Silver.
T4: buy Smithy
T5: buy Festival
T6: buy Goons
T7: buy Hunting Party
T8: play Goons, buy Goons AND Hunting Party

After his T8, I'm pretty sure that I'm dead.  I've only Ambassadored 2 Coppers and 2 Estates.  I even type in the chat: "you're way ahead of me on this one!"  However, he's only trashed 2 Estates with his Chapel... so I've got some hope yet of junking his deck.

And, with plenty of luck, that's what happens.  I end the game on piles during Turn 20 after only one other multi-Goons turn (two were played on Turn 18).  I think I won this one through luck and a few sub-optimal plays from my opponent (like Silver buys after the engine components were in place).  The last turn was where I picked up most of the points for the 51-12 point win.

Round 2--shraeye beats Wingnut 4-2.

Game 1 (Wingnut-53 shraeye-56): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/12/game-20121212-202124-b5619cd8.html
Opening board has Colony but is full of attacks: Militia, Sea Hag, Swindler, Ambassador.  Somehow I don't think I've played with Ambassador on a cursy board before, it was interesting. I open Sea Hag/Swindler, and my first swindler hit his Ambassador right after he bought it.  This let's me get to Hunting Parties first, winning that split.  Wingnut's apothecary lets him line things up better though, and he might have come back, if not for my swindler hitting one of his hunting parties in the early greening stage.

Game 2 (Wingnut-35 shraeye-6): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/12/game-20121212-203202-63cffc04.html
I get beat down on a conspirator board.  My first 5 is a Festival, while Wingnut's first 5 is the smarter buy of a Margrave.  At the time I thought, "hey more collision for him." But the discard attack keeps me from hitting $5 very often, and Wingnut soon picks up more Festivals than me.  Conspirators/Wishing Wells empty, and Wingnut piles out Festivals for the win.

Game 3 (shraeye-46 Wingnut-36): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/12/game-20121212-204110-4d16efc1.html
This game features a really good decision by me, very exciting!  Another Hunting Party board, but with an early $5 I grab a Haggler instead so I can pick up Throne Rooms/Peddlers with future HP buys.  Once I'm in the province range, this is nice because there are Grand Markets to pick up as well.  Wingnut is behind but still in it, when he has a terrible Turn 12, which really kills all chances.

Game 4 (Wingnut-30 shraeye-2): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/12/game-20121212-205118-79900230.html
I open Develop/Cutpurse, and luck decides to compound the problems that I walked right into.  My first turn with more than $4 is turn 9, where I hit $8.  At this point, Wingnut has hit me with plenty ambassadoring, and once he gets his Apprentice machine up, I am done for.

Game 5 (shraeye-44 Wingnut-36): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/12/game-20121212-210525-c0630794.html
A very exciting board, I don't think I've opened Chapel/Tunnel before.  But Hamlet was on the board, so I figure I can pick that up even when I've trashed most my economy and quickly boost back to getting Golds.  I pick up a Council Room for more cards and +buy so I can win the tunnel split 6/2.  Near the end, I needed more card draw and should have had another Council Room.  Wingnut changes plans when he sees he's behind in getting Tunnels/Golds, and buys more Council Rooms.  We actually tie on all other victory cards and I win with the +8 advantage from Tunnels.

Game 6 (Wingnut-22 shraeye-64): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/12/game-20121212-211737-d1a0da38.html
A colony board which has Possession (a card I am verry inexperienced with) and Apothecary/Quarry which can really aid in picking these up.  I ultimately decide to avoid Potion, and open Tournament/Silver.  This board also has Caravan, Cutpurse, Mountebank.  My plan is to junk up my deck fast, and his deck as well, so that he makes minimal use of the Possessed turns.  Wingnut gets hit with plenty of bad luck, as his opening Potion comes on turn 5, and is just short of an early Possession.  His first possession comes right before the turn in which I win Followers, so I narrowly missed giving him that as well.  I hit plenty of $9 and grab platinums, eventually buying out Provinces instead of Colonies.

Match report for Darkmage2011 (Fading) (8th) vs. Tables (25th)
Match result: Darkmage 1-4 Tables (1 Draw)

Game 1: Fading 61-55 Tables
A colony Hunting Party game. I go for a pretty boring HP strat, with Festival as my +X, figuring that well it's the best I can do and extra buys could be useful. Fading goes for a more engine approach, using Envoy, Hunting Party and also using HP to discard Tunnels. His approach pays off, eventually giving him a double Colony megaturn. We end up sharing the Colonies and getting 2 Provinces each, but his 3 Tunnels give him the win.

Game 2: Tables 44-19 Fading
A slightly interesting board. Ambassador, but little in the way of engine, and also Hunting Party and Chapel. We both open with Ambassador, but I take a risk and grab Horse Traders, for it's reaction and psuedo-sifting. It pays off as they luckily don't collide, and I also get rid of two Estates turn 3 while his Ambassador misses the reshuffle, AND I have my Horse Trader in hand. The early luck causes my mostly money deck to accelerate away, and I take the win as a result.

Game 3: Fading 21-34 Tables
A strange game in that I think P2 had the advantage. The board was basically a BM board - no villages, Chapel, Embassy, Jack, and we opened 2/5. I think P2 has the advantage because grabbing Embassy seems so strong opening, but P1 doing so gives away a Silver on the 2nd shuffle. Well I go for Embassy/Chapel, get lucky AGAIN as they don't collide and the early trashing along with fast Embassy gets me to Gold and another Embassy quick, which manages to get away from Fading's Jack based deck.
In retrospect, I think neither of us should have opened Chapel here. I think I should have opened Pawn/Embassy, while player 1... I don't know how bad that Silver is, but I think maybe Cellar/Jack? I might actually ask about this in reports section...

Game 4: Fading 27-35 Tables
An engine board, with three ($4) villages, Margrave, Haggler and... Coppersmith? We both go for the engine, although we build it in very different ways. I grab Margrave with my first $5, Fading grabs Haggler. Not sure which is actually better - Haggler DOES let you get villages with your $5's, but Margrave offers a buy, cycling and attack. Fading also grabs mostly Farming Villages, I mix between those and Worker's Villages. Fading also opened with Coppersmith, but I grab one much later. Fading grabs two Provinces (with Haggler Gold) relatively early, I don't green for a much longer time. The end result is, despite building very similar decks, two very different strategies. In the end, my deck manages a mega turn, grabbing 3 Provinces and 3 Gold (Haggler), and that's enough to keep it ticking over until the end.

Game 5: Fading 27-27 Tables (tie)
Man, Masquerade+BM isn't supposed to get 4 Provinces and a Duchy in 12 turns. It's definitely not supposed to do so for two players. I think Fading's opening was actually a little suspect... I don't think two Masqs is that good, and especially, I was tempted by Possession (but never bothered going for it) as a result. Maybe it's better than I'm guessing, but sim says otherwise (of course, we weren't simming mid game though...)

Game 6: Fading 26-27 Tables
Ironworks, Silk Road, Island. This was quite the interesting one, in a way. Obviously IW/SR is part of the strategy, but do you grab Islands as well? When? How many Ironworks? I grabbed two Ironworks, then rammed SRs, while Fading went for Islands first, and also grabbed 3 IWs. Well, as you can see, it was extremely close. I actually won partially because Fading accidentally grabbed the penultimate Estate. But I don't know what was in his next had, so, who can tell?

Thanks to Fading for being a great sport, and for the fun games.

But not strictly better, because the spinoff can have a different cost than the expansion.

Code: [Select]
(Fading draws: an Ironworks, a Trader, a Silver, and 2 Coppers.)
He could have gotten a Duchy.

Man, that's two rounds now I've lucked my way through (it's not just that, I felt generally luckier throughout). How long can I keep going?

Thanks for those games!  All of them were very close, except for the second game where my masquerade/haggler/big money beat the scrying pool, and the fourth game where your mountebank beat my witches and you won cities 6/4.  They were all fun games!

gman314 4 - 3 RisingJaguar

Game 1: RisingJaguar
We both forgot to get the log, but this game had a straightforward set except for Black Market, which I didn't get and he did. He got some rather useful things from there, like Goons.

Game 2: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/13/game-20121213-173731-a6aed9c0.html  gman314 33 - 32 RisingJaguar
I passed on Conspirators because of the lack of extra buys. I don't think my strategy was by any means optimal, but it squeaked out the win on the 3-pile.

Game 3: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/13/game-20121213-174802-3136fcd0.html RisingJaguar 91 - 13 gman314
Scrying Pool and Vineyard dominated this set. I really don't know why I lost so badly here, but I did.

Game 4: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/13/game-20121213-175739-a1d92f78.html gman314 37 - 29 RisingJaguar
I went for a fairly straightforward Apprentice - Hoard approach with an early Ghost Ship to slow him down. He went for more of an engine which took a bit of time to get going.

Game 5: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/13/game-20121213-180750-adcda070.html gman314 59 - 43 RisingJaguar
This set was dominated by Mountebank and Goons with Trading Post and Caravan as counters for each. I think what did it for me here was being the first to Goons as well as an early lucky block of Mountebank.

Game 6: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/13/game-20121213-181523-a21a2d18.html RisingJaguar 36 - 18 gman314
On this set, I ignored Young Witch, thinking that I could use Baron to get an early Forge and then have some powerful Menageries in every hand. It did not work at all and in retrospect was probably a pretty terrible idea.

Game 7: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/13/game-20121213-182616-4f391621.html gman314 87 - 60 RisingJaguar
Another board where he went engine and I went with a bit less complicated approach. We both opened with Steward, but while I went into a big money deck with a bit of support from Swindler, Haggler and Warehouse, he went into an engine which again took a while to set up.

All in all, some good games, against I'm pretty sure the highest ranked opponent I've played. Our different approaches were very evident, with me almost always taking more of a BM approach.

It's been awhile since i've played serious games!

I just felt really compelled to build engines and a lot of them just didn't work, and I paid for it :( I don't really have much explanation for any of the games except for number 2, which I was pretty surprised he managed to get province + 2 ironworks in a turn.  Good luck in the rest of the games :)

Round 2 Results: scryordie (50) vs. bjmartin

50 4 - 1 bjmartin

To be honest, these games were not the most interesting. Luck played a pretty substantial factor, and many of the games were slogs with cursers in play.

Game 1: scryordie 32 - bjmartin 21

We both open into a Big Money supported by Jack of All Trades and Courtyard. I am able to get a Gold on Turn 3, which gives me a lead bjmartin can't overcome. By circumstance, I go Double Courtyard Jack, while my opponent went for Double Jack Courtyard. This game reminded how much I usually underrate Courtyard.

Game 2: scryordie 5 - bjmartin -3

We both go for a Universtiy supported Torturer rush. I don't know where this game went wrong for bjmartin. I imagine I just got the first big Torturer turn first, and from there I built up my deck more and more while bjmartin's was flooded with Curses. I end it in a pretty cute fashion by gaining the last couple Curses from my opponent's Torturer.

Game 3: scryordie 17 - bjmartin 36

To be honest, this game made me pretty frustrated. I open Potion/Warehouse and aim to run a University/Margrave/Throne Room/Trade Route in a game featuring many different Victory cards. My opponent opens Silver/Island and goes for a Big Money Margrave style game. The first time where I get a University and a Margrave in the same hand is Turn 16. I feel that was pretty unlucky.

Game 4: scryordie 41 - bjmartin 36

I am pretty frustrated because of the last game, and I make several play mistakes. Unfortunately for my opponent, luck is back on my side. I manage to get a Witch in my second shuffle, while my opponent stalls at $4. From here, I have a clear edge, and despite some Witch collisions I am able to get enough Provinces and Duchies to overcome bjmartin's aggressive Duchy/Duke.

Game 5: scryordie 58 - bjmartin 36

We both get the 5/2 and open with the Mountebank. The curse war starts and we both get a second Mountebank and a Gold. Our strategies diverge in the midgame. My opponent goes for Island for the deck thinning, whereas I opt for Farming Villages to counter his Ghost Ship and go through the Curses filling my deck. Aided by Golds and Farming Villages, my deck is able to survive the end game greening.

Thanks for the games bjmartin. Too bad that most of the games were pretty uninteresting, but you were certainly a fun opponent!
