Gardens Division: Bracket and Results

Results for the Gardens Division bracket are to be posted in this thread.

For each series post the overall winner and the number of games each player won. Please try to grab each game log from isotropic before moving on. Discussion of the results is not necessary but it is encouraged.

Here is the bracket for the Witch Division of the 2012 DominionStrategy.com championships: http://dominionstrategy.challonge.com/2012gardens

Full rules can be found here: http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=5686.0

Each round, you are responsible for finding your opponent and scheduling a game by the end of the week. You may mutually agree to any rules you wish to play by. If you cannot agree you must play with the default rules as follows: veto mode off, identical starting hands on, official point counter on, fully random sets, point counter extension allowed.

The first player in the first game is decided by whichever player is 'higher' in the Challonge bracket. For round one, this means the higher seed will play first. To accomplish this, begin a game in the tournament lobby and select the player who is to play first. After that game, you may both move to the Secret Chamber lobby (but don't exit Isotropic!) and the player to play first will be the loser of the previous game.

If you have trouble scheduling, please message me and I will attempt to work it out.

Have fun and good luck!

This makes me think: It would be sweet do do some March Madness style bracket prediction for this Championship. Its obviously too late to start for round 1, but there's probably too many players in round 1 anyway. Maybe we could do something like this for the round of 64 or 32? We could pause the tournament for 3 or 4 days to let people create their brackets, and have the winner get something cool! I don't know if it's feasible, but it would be fun!

2) Hardly any difference with regard to betting then.

In Tuvalu we bet with Coconuts though, and the only sport we have is Coconut throwing. Which makes it tricky to play because you can lose your coconut to a bet and have nothing to throw!

Obi Wan Bonogi 4-0 over pianoboy21

I requested to play without possession and tournament which he agreed to.

Game 1
Game 2

Lost log for Game 3.  It was a degenerate IGG duchy rush.  We agree to prohibit IGG going forward.

Game 4

Just for confusion DG 4  : 0 -dg-.

DG 41 : 28 -dg- http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/03/game-20121203-114247-92da7da3.html
DG 28 : 21 -dg- http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/03/game-20121203-115648-37e7bd6c.html
DG 40 : 10 -dg- http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/03/game-20121203-121347-e4711fd0.html
DG 38 : 34 -dg- http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/03/game-20121203-122320-acf90db4.html

The first three games were pretty rough attack games with multiple attacks and ill gotten gains. The second game is the most interesting of those and it might have been worth seeing what a second torturer would have done for my opponent. The fourth game was a fool's gold rush and I probably was a bit lucky to squeeze it out, possibly due to having less terminals.

Thanks to -dg- for some nice friendly Dominion games with some pleasant chat along the way.

eliegel34 4-0 over kaboom30000 (sillle14)

eliegel34 54 : 53  kaboom30000 http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/03/game-20121203-181029-6cd9a550.html

Thanks to kaboom30000 for some fun games of dominion in my first every tournament.

I went for the golden deck in game 1 with Chapel/Bishop, and was quite slow at building it.  I was able to just squeak out a win with a more reliable deck in the end.  I know I didn't play optimally, but I'm not sure how i'd play that shuffle luck.  Game 2 was a Sea Hag slog, that i was able to transition out of just a little faster with some Apprentice play.  Game 3 was a Colony game with a crazy Black Market and a very slow to set up King's Court/Torturer deck.  He got 3 Colonies before i could lock his deck with Torturer, and the game was much closer than the score would suggest.  Game 4 was Hunting Party/Swindler vs. Minion.  I was able to trash faster with Forge, and attack him enough slow him down from there.

RichardMNixon 4-1 Atariman486

We both forgot to grab the first 3 gamecaps, surely you can trust Nixon though.

Wharf, Bazaar, and Crossroads showed up often. I vetoed IGG in one of them because, man, forget that card.

As I recall:

Game 1: I don't remember very well. I think I got a relatively early forge while Atariman went stables. Forged gold silver and copper into a deck of mostly platinum.
Game 2: We both went chapel/silver I think with mining village, rabble, and bazaar out. Atariman worked the better balance during a green slugfest at the end.
Game 3: Atariman started greening early while I started with bishop and built up a pile of wharves and bazaars to steal it at the end.
Game 4: I open silver/silver rather than silver/monument to take advantage of bank and avoid collision with wharf. Noticed a little later that crossroads and harem could be fun too but never got into it too deeply.
Game 5: We both open moneylender into BM I luck into an earlier gold and add a haven, then the first roll of his thief hits double green. Tense moment was turn 15 - playing haven to get a hand of gold, copper, and green while I was down by 5 with one province left. If I havened the copper I could buy an estate and be safe the next turn since I'd win the tie. If I had havened the gold, he'd have had a chance to win by one, but if he didn't then the next province would have been mine (with the havened copper I got to $7). I played it safe, not sure if that was correct.

Thanks atariman for a great series of games!

bjmartin 4-2 qmech

Game 1:
qmech 52
bjmartin 47
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/04/game-20121204-121534-84c4c119.html
Interesting game where I go Tournament, and he goes University/Vineyards. In the end the game lasted long enough for him to make his vineyards worth 7 each and he won.

Game 2:
bjmartin 22
qmech 18
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/04/game-20121204-123115-13afe7c3.html
Game with Swindler and Young Witch on the board. He built an engine, I took a slight early lead in points, and I was able to 3-pile with the help of Swindler before he was able to catch up

Game 3:
bjmartin 22
qmech 15
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/04/game-20121204-123705-27ca0351.html
IGG rush where I was able to win going from the 2nd spot probably mostly through luck

Game 4:
bjmartin 47
qmech 27
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/04/game-20121204-124957-b384bf32.html
Tournament game with Mountebank on the board too. I lined my tournament up first.

Game 5:
qmech 49
bjmartin 23
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/04/game-20121204-125702-fa993cf9.html
He went Oracle/BM which was too fast for the Conspirator deck I was trying to put together

Game 6:
bjmartin 33
qmech 28
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/04/game-20121204-130949-f3fb057d.html
Another Swindler game where I was trying to go Minions, but they kept getting swindled. I think expand and going first won this game for me, but it was another close one.

Thanks qmech for the great games!

Game 1: I don't think I deserved to win it.  The Province might have been a mistake as it almost cost me the game; I also missed a chance at Remodel University -> Vineyard.

Game 2: "Built" is over-generous: 7 Native Villages and a Margrave is not an engine.  I had no good plan for buying the draw I needed.

Game 3: I'm not sure luck had much to do with it: I placed my bet on Hoard rather than IGG.  That's still going to be too slow to pick up more Provinces than a straight IGG rush, as you showed.

Game 4: If you're putting that one down to luck I won't protest.

Game 5: At 3-1 down I had to start playing accurately.  I think I did here, and it's the game I'm happiest with.

Game 6: I thought I lost this early on due to my dubious Moneylender/Swindler opening.  I fall way behind on Minions, then fluke into Swindling several in quick succession, which raises my hopes for a while.  But I'm playing catch up all the way, and don't make it in the end.

A well-deserved 4-2 to bjmartin.  As is customary, I must also thank you for freeing me from arranging any more matches.  :P
