A triple duration attempt: Musketeers
« on: December 02, 2012, 10:00:55 am »
+2

Musketeers:
Action/Duration/Reaction - $3
+$1
At the start of your next turn, +1 action
---
When you discard this from play, draw an extra card at the end of this turn's clean-up phase.

A duration card the gives 3 different effects over 3 turns. Buy lots of these and you'll be able to play lots of them in sync with each other to do well.

It's a terminal Copper, that's followed by a Fishing Village (without the $1), followed by a Caravan (that's vulnerable to attacks).

(Yes, I know there were actually 4 musketeers)

Edit: Removed the bottom decking. The intention is to have a followable: +$1, at the start of your next turn, +1 action, the turn after, +1 card
Edit 2: Found a happy version.

The idea is that Now/Start of your next turn/Start of the turn after is too hard to follow, even though that's probably what this card would end up feeling like.

The other idea is a sort of self synergising card, but you need to "pace" it correctly

A similar idea would be
Fleet
Action/Duration - $4
+2 Cards
---
At the start of your next turn, +2 Actions

Musketeers is delightfully bizarre: a Peddler with the benefits split over three turns!  It seems like that must make it weak, but it's still enormous fun.  What's the thinking behind the ordering of the +$1 and +1 Action?  It seems like the Action first turn might be more useful so that they can't clash with other actions.  And could the other benefits be boosted a little?  Perhaps +$2 instead?

Fleet looks much more playable, and I think I quite like it. I'd guess it's stronger than Fishing Village, with occasional hard falls when they bunch together in odd ways.

Why not just say:

Musketeers:
Action/Duration - $3
+$1
At the start of your next turn, +1 action
At the start of your following turn, +1 card

This way you get the full effect when you use TR, KC, Procession, or Band of Misfits

Musketeers:
Action/Duration - $3
+1 action
At the start of your next turn, +1 card.
At the end of your next turn's Buy phase, gain a Silver, placing it on top of your deck.

or

Musketeers:
Action/Duration - $3
+1 action
At the start of your next turn, +1 card, then gain a Silver, placing it on top of your deck.

Steal the wording from Outpost.

Musketeers:
Action/Duration - $3
+$1
At the start of your next turn, +1 action.
If you discard this from play next turn, draw up to 6 cards (instead of 5) in that turn's Clean-up phase.

Not bad, but the benefit doesn't stack

Maybe:

Musketeers:
Action/Duration - $3
+$1
At the start of your next turn, +1 action
---
When you discard this from play, draw an extra card at the end of that turn's clean up phase.

Of course, there's a reason the official durations draw at the start of the next turn -- all sorts of things can happen in between your turns. (Outpost is obviously an exception to this.)

How about cribbing from Haven/NV?

Musketeers:
Action/Duration - $3
+$1
At the start of your next turn, +1 Action, set aside the top card of your deck face down.
At the start of your following turn, put the card set aside into your hand.

I found a version that seems as simple as possible while preserving the original spirit of the card; it's in the OP now.

There were only 3 musketeers at first, d'Artagnan only becomes the 4th at the end of the story.  ;D

Maybe I could give it a 4th effect that only comes in at the end of the game.
A victory point perhaps?

That would be highly thematic. :D
Maybe if you have at least 4?  :P

At the bottom of the Musketeers Pile, the randomiser card will instead be:

All for One!
Victory - $4
2VP for every 3 Musketeers in your deck
---
Use this as the placeholder card for musketeers. Place it at the bottom of the pile.

It's a great deal if you piledrive musketeers, but it's not an Alt VP strategy

I'm going to do a fan expansion with a lot of these "special" Randomisers.

Well actually there were lots of musketeers; 3 of them were just more prominent in the story. ;D
