Pools, Tools and Fools
« on: November 21, 2012, 07:03:57 pm »

The following set is the set Pools, Tools and Fools from the Alchemy rulebook.
Apothecary, Apprentice, Golem, Scrying Pool, Baron, Coppersmith, Ironworks, Nobles, Trading Post, Wishing Well

The challenge set here is a slight modification of that set.
Apothecary, Apprentice, Throne Room, Scrying Pool, Festival, Coppersmith, Library, Nobles, Moneylender, Wishing Well

Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to run out the Province pile in as few turns as possible. Whoever takes the least turns wins. Score is a tie-breaker.

Please PM game logs to me by Monday the 26th at midnight EST.

Go ahead. It may speed you up, but it may hurt your tiebreaker score.

Can we re-submit if we beat a previous attempt?

So, here are the results. I'm surprised that Rabid didn't end up submitting and that Zahlman didn't resubmit, but here are the four entries I did get.

In fourth place, Archetype made use of the synergy between Apothecary and Wishing Well to draw cards, with an Apprentice added for good measure. His engine had just enough to buy a single Province each turn and ended in 16 turns with 30 points.

In third place came Zahlman, who used Apprentice to draw piles of cards and subsequently use Festivals to play multiple Coppersmiths and get the extra buys to take advantage of them, also ending in 16 turns but this time with 37 points.

In second place we have Geronimoo's engine Apothecary, Coppersmith and Wishing Well, with extra drawing from Apprentice and buys from a Festival to buy 2 Provinces per turn and end in 13 turns with 24 points.

Finally, in first place, -Stef- bought a bit of just about everything, also taking only 13 turns, but not relying on Apprenticing Provinces for draw and so had 43 points at game end.

Thanks to all who participated!

I am apparently super bad with Apothecary, because I couldn't do better than 20 turns when I tried dipping into Alchemy here. (And presumably there's no way SP will be good here without Apothecary support since you need the starting coppers for Coppersmith) Ah, but it synergizes with WW (and it's not hard to make guesses with it earlier on), I see.

As for not resubmitting, I skipped an earlier submission of only 35 points in 16 turns (it highlighted the megaturn idea better, but was highly non-reproducible) and never really got a better idea for an approach than what I submitted.

Really? I won here?  8)

I was quite certain 12 turns is possible. If you look at my entry, the start is actually quite bad. I'm even forced to trash a Festival later on. And even then with a bit of luck on turn 12 I could have succeeded for 12 turns.

Something must be good about this run though, because I tried several more, and never beat it. I always opened potion/Wishing well (that just feels good) and I did get the 'lucky start' of $2P/$5 on turns 3/4 from time to time. Even drew the apothecary on turn 5 some times, which feels really good. But ended up with >13 turns every time.

I really don't see it. Anyone? Where do I have enough shuffle luck later on to compensate for this start?

I think I managed a 15 turn, but was expecting 12 turns to win so didn't submit sorry.
Especially on potion / wishing well boards it always feels like you could do better if you tried more games.

I actually couldn't even get 13 turns because every time I'm in a position to end the game on turn 13, I draw a dead hand.
