First time trying Herbalist + Philosopher's Stone

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201211/20/game-20121120-172540-0ddafaf5.html
So I was playing some level 0 guy (who played a lot better than I'd expect a level 0 to play). I know I won the game, but 4 provinces, 4 duchies and 2 estates in 21 turns with very little attacking (that actually only benefited me) seems awfully slow and this was supposed to be a very good combo on it's own. What did I do wrong, apart from not drawing my potion with my herbalists in the early game?

No idea. Perhaps a few more Herbalists early? T8 could have both been a double-herbalist turn, that duchy might have been just one tad too early.

Could just be shuffle luck. Shuffle luck can always be a factor in thick decks...

Herbalist/P.Stone is more susceptible to shuffle luck than most.

Couple of notes: Turn 8 needs to be double herbalist. Really theres no reason to favor Duchy until much later. As for the shuffle luck, turns 10 and 11 were horrible for you. Two P.Stones and no herbalist in sight. Then a string of herbalists with no stones. So thats no good.

I think you should have steered clear of PStone/Herbalist here. Virtually every other card fits in to a fairly straightforward, decent-enough draw engine.

I have been forced to accept that lackluster play is a town tell for you.

Herbalist/PStone is a fun combo, but it's not unbeatable.

It's a bit like Apothecary/Native Village in that it works, for sure, but don't expect miracles, especially with bad shuffling.

I've put together a script in the simulator for stone+herbalist and it wins against big money 66/33 and is about 50/50 with merchant ships but loses to margarve+treasure. My final script wasn't too far from your play; one potion, all herbalists, immediate duchies, so maybe Geronimoo had a better play method. For your game as played I don't think there's much you could have done since any single purchase, such as a market, would have made very little difference to the draws of such a large deck.
