Are Familiars just too slow on this board?

I've never seen a board where Familiars worked as badly as this one.  It was close, up until my opponent got a bunch of Grand Markets and Goons in his hand at once.  Is Familiar the right strategy?  What should I have done?

I don't know if you can skip Familiar, but I think the Quarry is a much better opener. Lab + Cellar is a soft counter to the junking aspect of Curses, and Goon's points give a counter to the negative VP aspect.

I think the turn 5 Silver might have been a mistake. Cellar will allow you to press your Familiar advantage and get to your Quarry faster. Quarry is much better than Silver in this set, so cycling to the Quarry is probably superior than Silver.
