Mafia Lingo/Dictionary
« on: November 06, 2012, 02:19:30 pm »

People have wanted this for a while so I'll just start with the ones I know and I'll keep this post updated as people comment more of them

Commonly Used Acronyms
RVS - Random Voting Stage
LyLo - Lynch Or Lose (Correctly [Lynch Scum Or Lose])
MyLo - Mislynch And Lose
FoS - Finger of suspicion
OMGUS - Oh my god you suck
VT - Vanilla Townie
PR - Power Role
WIFOM - Wine in front of me (this is what this causes me to think but the mafia might want me to think this)
Quickhammer - Voting for someone at L-1 who you were not voting for, to end the day for some reason (often to win as scum, or to stop discussion)
SK - Serial Killer
NK - Night Kill (Rarely No Kill based on context)
QH - Quickhammer
WW - Werewolf (on f.DS these are common only if there is multiple factions)

Commonly Used Terms
Bus -Building a case on your teammates and often voting for your teammates as scum
Sheep - to vote or argue without adding content of your own. (in reference to sheeplike (unoriginal) thinking.)
Tunnel: to develop tunnel vision on a player and see anything they do as scummy
ObvX - obviously X (e.g. obvtown = obviously town)
Breadcrumb - Leaving a hint at what your role is (or to set up a fakeclaim) in a post
Claim - to announce all of or parts of ones role
Massclaim - Everyone claiming their role in an order, normally to try and catch scum in a lie

F.DS Specific
Derphammer - Quickhammering as town, on town in a situation that doesn't benefit town
PINL - Promise I'm Not Lying
Twinclaim - the fact that you know another player in real life; and also deriving information from that fact. - First instance is Jo/Glooble in MIV
Pulling/Doing an eHunt - drunk posting often in a hilarious way. See MVI
DAMA - Drunk ask me anything, see Pulling/Doing an eHunt.
Pulling a Bozzball - Lurking oneself out of a game, from either faction. Generally caused by an apathetic attitude towards the game rather than a planned (or even unplanned!) strategy
Kickball - See Pulling/Doing an eHunt
No Lunch - Started as a phone typo by Axxle in BM3, turned into a joke by the mod and players of that game, means no lynch but tends to result in hungry mafia players.
S.H.D - Stop Halt Desist.

The "Morgrim Defense" - In his first game here (M2) Morgrim self hammered, since then he has raised his meta as someone who is always just a bit crazy and always seems super scummy. The Morgrim defense is that crazy Morgrim is town Morgrim. This forum has not yet seen scum Morgrim.

Pulling an Insomniac - Depending on context either, having the right lynch and talking yourself out of it and into a town lynch, or as an IC voting for someone you think as town in an attempt to catch the hammer...in a game where mafia have day chat.

Mom Salon - Refers to player Mcmcsalot, comes from a phone autocorrect in ZMIX.

Fuzzy - Refers to Eevee

Isn't lylo rather lynch or lose, referring to situation where town needs to lynch someone to avoid getting endgamed?

Derphammering is a term specific to this forum. I'ts hard to describe (should probably ask O, the master), but cutting the discussion short by quickhammering someone would be my attempt.

I'd say PINL ("promise I'm not lying") is specific to this forum.

Maybe include links to relevant mafiascum wiki entries?  E.g.:

RVS - Random Voting Stage
LyLo - Lynch Or Lose
MyLo - Mislynch And Lose
FoS - Finger of suspicion
OMGUS - Oh my god you suck
VT - Vanilla Townie
PR - Power Role
WIFOM - Wine in front of me (this is what this causes me to think but the mafia might want me to think this)

SK - Serial Killer

On LyLo - you might want to mention that players have to Lynch correctly.

-to bus: attacking your team mates as scum to make it look like you're not on their team
-to sheep: to vote or argue without adding content of your own. (in reference to sheeplike (unoriginal) thinking.)
-to tunnel: to develop tunnel vision on a player and see anything they do as scummy

I guess I should point out that some of the later entries under Acronyms aren't acronyms (bus, sheep, tunnel, etc)

Breadcrumb is to intentionally plant something erlier in the day or in days before, so that it can be picked up later in the game to reinforce a claim of a role or an action.

Werewolf is a flavour mafia, often used when there are two mafia factions. One "regular" and one "werewolf" faction.

Massclaim is when all or most of the players in a set up claims their role.

Which reminds me. Claim - To announce one's role or parts of it.

Pulling a Bozzball - Lurking oneself out of a game, from either faction. Generally caused by an apathetic attitude towards the game rather than a planned (or even unplanned!) strategy.

perhaps something about card name or card role in the fds portion. We have a lot of games that are dominion flavored and as such many games have roles that are styled after a dominion card and given the name of the card.

ITT is common internet slang for "In This Thread" - does ours mean town?

Insomniac is drunk with power.

This is why IC is a good role for him - which brings us back to our original point before he started editing everybodies post: "Pulling an Insomniac" - being drunk with the power of IC, and voting a"known" townie to entice scum into trying a quickhammer - just to forget that scum has daychat and can coordinate the lynch, preventing you from "catching" them.

In all seriousness, it'd be funny to slip one of those into a Mafia Game, and see how many people call you out on it... Maybe a nice bastard one. Like one run by Morgrim.

I totally missed the post-editing shenanigans here the first time around. It's a brilliant demonstration for why Google Wave failed miserably.

Aww, c'mon. He's adorable in a completely and utterly cheesy way. Nobody has ever taken him seriously (I hope) but that doesn't make him bad.

And he WAS spectacular in The Princess Bride - although his role was rather small.

Ugh, slapstick

Honestly though, I'll sit down and watch almost anything from 1905 - 1940 in a heartbeat. Very little that I don't just absolutely love from those years - and that spans all genres of movies.

By the 50's to 60's I start to get a little more selective in my tastes. While there are certainly good movies from the 70's, it just wasn't my era. 80's (when I was born) movies are as varied as they are today, but there was a lot that I enjoy from there. Early 90's were good too. By the time you reach the last 18ish years there hasn't been what I've felt are spectacular story telling movies.

Great actors are secondary to me, and I think the industry cares too much about the cinematic spectacular these days. A good, solid, well told story is just so much harder to find (not impossible. They DO still make good films, but story as an art in movies seems to be slipping).

Obviously that's all VERY generic and unfair to break up or categorize movies by year of release, but it's -generally- how I feel. (That is, "year" is never a determining factor in my choice to watch a movie or feel any level of enjoyment towards it.)

When Harry Met Sally is a fantastic movie.

No rom com of the last 20 years can touch Nora Ephron's 90s stuff.

"Boxed Lunch" box lynch, meaning a lynch for the player BoxOfDOG. Comes from an autocorrect error in NewMafiaIII.

Time to add "AtE" to the lingo.

Coined by Eevee, means "Appeal to Emotion" and is applied to a specific type of defense.

It's on the commonly used abbreviations that's linked on many mafia games. http://wiki.mafiascum.net/index.php?title=Commonly_Used_Abbreviations

Huh.  Oh well, Eevee attribution retracted.  We can still add it to this page.

What does /tag mean in signup threads? Context seems to imply it's different from /in? Or is it just some sort of running joke?

/tag to watch the thread so the thread appears in your "new replies to your posts", but you aren't actually in the game.

I do it a lot for games that I can't play in, but want to keep track of for stat purposes or for general entertainment.

I wish for the term "Boxed Lunch" to be added to the list, referring to a BoxOfDOG Lynch.

*cough*
Yep. xD

"Boxed Lunch" box lynch, meaning a lynch for the player BoxOfDOG. Comes from an autocorrect error in NewMafiaIII.
This is what I am referring to.

So, is this ever going to be updated?  Or will someone else have to start a new thread if we want an updated one?

Can we add "Pulling a WW" to be when a player is town once and then rolls scum over, and over, and over, and over again?  Like "Wasn't soandso just scum last game?"  "Yeah, he must be pulling a WW".

I've been gone a long time, so I have to ask.  Current references to WW meant to invoke which potential WW, WanderingWinder or Witherweaver?

Witherweaver.

If we were referring to WanderingWinder, we'd all be referring to everyone, right?

Somebody should make a new thread in general discussion: "a primer on F.DS lingo and in-jokes"

Somebody should make a new thread in general discussion: "a primer on F.DS lingo and in-jokes"

The opening entry in the primer should be an exposition explaining why we're writing said primer.

It must feel pretty strange to take a break from the forums and then come back just to find out that you've been Wandering Winder all along.

Not as strange as taking that break and coming back just to find that online Dominion still has serious issues.
