I recall all such cards explicitly stating the attacked person trashes the card himself.

And even if they didn't, Market Squares says "when one of your cards is trashed".

I recall all such cards explicitly stating the attacked person trashes the card himself.

Oddly enough though, Knights seem to think they do the trashing, even though they just told the opponents to do the trashing:

Quote from: Knights
If a Knight is trashed by this, trash this card.

What would be a better, more technically correct wording? "If one of the trashed cards is a Knight, trash this card." Not too much longer, but then a few of them are already out of room for text.

I think the "this" doesn't refer to the Knights card, but the effect it has.

Bomb, Cannon, and many of the Gunpowder cards can strongly effect gameplay, particularly in a destructive way

Right. The word "this" in 'If a Knight is trashed by this" is a pronoun standing in for "Each other player reveals the top 2 cards of his deck, trashes one of them costing from $3 to $6, and discards the rest." If this (that whole process that just happened) caused a Knight to be trashed, trash this card.
