I just started playing Letterpress for iOS, which is pretty incredible.  https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/letterpress-word-game/id526619424?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D4

I highly recommend all of these games. But, in order of importance, I would say:

1. Trainyard
Extremely addictive puzzle game. the difficulty raises from very easy to absurdly difficult at the later stages, and there's unlimited replayability because the online database has millions of user-made maps.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWtIb7NEYgM

2. Battleheart
Worth at least one play through; Several more if you love gearing up and levelling up different parties.

3. Where's my Water?
Very fun and addictive. It can be challenging at times, especially the achievements, but overall not too hard. They're always adding new levels too.

4. Geodefense
This tower defense game rocks, as does its sequel GD: Swarm. Unfortunately there's some Openfeint crap that the game nags you about trying to sign you up for. Just make sure you turn off hardcore mode on your first play through.

5. Cut the Rope
This one's almost exactly like where's my water in terms of layout. Very quick and significantly easier than the above puzzle games.

6. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
This is a port of the nintendo game. The characters are great and the crime solving puzzles are pretty challenging. However, the dialogue takes a significant amount of time (as it probably should because you have to remember what people say), the game is quite long, and occasionally you will get stuck if you miss something important. It's absolutely worth it if you have the time, and a trilogy package of this game and the next 2 sequels is supposed to be coming out in a few months.

Released today, there's a free lite version and the paid version is only a dollar for just today.  All the reviewers compare it to Star Fox.

Side Note: loved Cut the Rope.  I haven't tried any of the others you mentioned but I'll check them out if they're on Android.

First world problems: I have too many things on my phone/Kindle designed to take up idle time, and too short a commute / too long a workday to enjoy them all.

For Android, Word Hero is a pretty neat game.  It is basically Boggle, but the hook is that games are played simultaneously with hundreds of other players in the world.  You can't just start a new game any time -- you have to wait up to 2 minutes for the next game to start or jump into the one that is on-going, and after each game you get to see how you rank among all the other players.

I cannot recommend Hero Academy highly enough. It is easily my favorite iOS game and probably one of my favorite video games of all time. Rarely has a day gone by since its launch that I haven't played it.

The iOS version is free to download and comes with one team (of five, soon to be six). The Steam version is $5 and comes with two teams (including a team based on Team Fortress 2!) (yes, it's Valve-approved, that's how good this game is).

Hit me up in game (I'm stevezissou) and I'll show you the ropes.

I am really enjoying PunchQuest. It's free, and it is summarised pretty well in the title of the game. Fun enough to download and play, nothing to be too serious about.

In addition, Brainss is a nice variant for an RTS. You get to control zombies!

I see mostly iOs games listed here. I don't game often on my phone but I can recommend Great Big War Game for iOS or Android which has a great campaign mode and then endless online multiplayer RTS.

To remedy this...

The current Humble Bundle is for Android (also Windows, OS X and Linux).  I have heard good things about Machinarium and the other games look good too.  I have never actually purchased a Humble Bundle so I don't know how it will work out, but I plan to try it out later today.

If you've never heard of Humble Bundle, it is a really cool project.  I found out about it shortly after the previous Android Bundle offering was over.  That was sad. :P

I have downloaded it, and I am loving it! This really is a great game. If you like TBS and boardgames, you are likely to enjoy this a lot. I am playing under the username weni2009 (thanks for being nice in the chat, limpy aka. stevezissou), I am still figuring things out, but if you're looking for an opponent who is less than a complete stranger, invite me to a match! I will say beforehand that my time is quite limited (and I'm playing on a wifi-only ipad, so I have to be at home, not doing laundry, cleaning, cooking, eating, quality time with the wife, etc.), so I'll usually make just a few moves, and then take a day or so to make the next move, but that's the nice thing of asynchronous play!

Now I just have to decide which team purchase in order just to get rid of the mildly annoying ads...:)

I just got an iDevice for the first time ever; what games are like, must haves? I'm sure there's games that have been out for years now I've never heard of that everyone assumes everyone's already played.

Except Angry Birds. I've played that.

I'm mad at us for not having yet developed ARC for me either.  I'm not entirely sure if we're still trying to port to android, as I'm not really involved with that anymore.

We might get on steam though if we get approved for greenlight

I'm hoping that Auditorium comes to Android sometime in the future.  It is on iOS though.

If you've never played this game, you should give the demo a shot right now.  It's gorgeous.

I think the "classic" iOS games would probably include Flow, Spelltower, and Trainyard.  I have also got Ra, Tigris & Euphrates, Medici, Le Havre, and Ticket to Ride.

I've been trying to figure out how you move above platinum league. I routinely score top 10 in platinum league and occasionally top 3.

Granted I can also hit below 100 so maybe it is a moving average?

My average ranges from 525 to 600, depending on how sluggish I've felt over a set. The problem is, when I'm playing well, I hit 650-700 on a regular basis. But when I play when I'm tired, I end up between 350-450. Thus my average doesn't climb as high as I would like.

Also, I never experienced leagues lower than Platinum, since my first 50 game average outranked those divisions. :'( I've read wonderful stories about the lower leagues in taglines though... Sounds like a magical place where people can actually feel smart. On a good day I'm landing in the ~85th percentile in Platinum. I average ~60th percentile. Sigh.

Sigh.

Edit: I mean Diamond League (just checked)

I've been trying to figure out how you move above platinum league. I routinely score top 10 in platinum league and occasionally top 3.

Granted I can also hit below 100 so maybe it is a moving average?

Your ranking is your average score over your most current 50 games. Diamond League starts at 425+ average.

Also, when calculating your "last 50 games" to get your average score, it only counts "official" games. An official game is one in which you score at least 40% of your average. So if you leave the program running and go through a whole bunch of games scoring 0, you will not be penalized.

Karisofts Dungeon Village is 69p at the moment, pretty good little timewaster with an RPG element to it.

Is anyone else still playing Word Hero?
It has been my go to game when commuting for a really long time now, and I recently got above 1000 points for the first time (which is obviously why I'm posting)

I loved it, and got close to the end playing it on my phone, but…it's effectively two full-length Final Fantasy games put together. Meaning it's about twice as long as it should be. It outstayed its welcome a bit.

If you have an iPad or even an iPhone, Ghost Trick is an amazing game. You can get the first part of it for free, then pay for the rest if you like it. One piece of advice: play it with the sound on.

I've still been playing the Spectral Souls line (I mentioned it in another thread).  Very long, tactical RPG.

Spectral Souls
Blazing Souls Accelate
Record of Agarest War

Good games if you like building up characters.

I picked up Final Fantasy IV: The After Years from the Play store and started it.  Basically more FFIV, so seems fun.  I also had to buy Secret of Mana because nostalgia.  They've released quite a bit of FF games, all of I-VI so far, plus some peripherals (a new Final Fantasy Dimensions, which I haven't tried yet).  They're also putting out Dragon Quest games.  Looks like they have I-IV + VIII.  I never really spent any time playing the originals; not sure if I'll go for these or not.  Also Chaos Rings.. I had started playing the first one back when I got an iPod Touch some time ago, but then I switched to Android and gave that away, so I never finished the game.  It was fun, though, and there are a few games on that series.

Anyway, Square has a lot of stuff now.

In regards to controls, though, I'm not the biggest fan of their unbound direction pad.  Wherever you touch and hold the screen, a direction pad appears, and you slide a direction to move that way.  I guess it can be convenient that you can hold the device in different ways, but sometimes it can be difficult to move certain directions or control finer movements.

Oh hey, just when I was thinking of mentioning this, have any of you played Geometry Dash?  It's basically a rhythm game where you're moving through a course and have to dodge obstacles.  It gets really hard later on.  I'm on Clutterfunk right now.  I've gotten to 86% in it, I think?

Not a game, but I recently stumbled upon an app called Chwazi which is a nice little "choose a random person" app.  Good for selecting a first player.  It can also split people into teams.

I loved it as well, and played until I could auto-battle every boss in the game (including all "levels" of the optional three). What bothered me wasn't so much that it was "effectively two RPG's in one", as it's actual length felt just right to me. It's that, as is demonstrated by my commitment to get to the "ultimate power level", I love super powering my teams. Having to do so twice at every stage of the game drove me nuts. I leveled and leveled and leveled, finished a story arc... and was right back to where I started.

Once everything came together and I could choose and stick with one team, it became immensely better for my tastes.

Dragon Quest II crashes constantly for me. They still haven't fixed it. As far as I can tell, Dragon Quest III isn't out yet. They're great versions of I and IV, though! Dragon Quest IV on iOS even has party chat, which they took out of the North American DS version.

WAAAAAAAAT!!! I loved those games. I think the first Dragon Warrior (Quest now) was the first RPG game I ever played and it's still my favorite genre. And I think I probably put more time into VII than any other single player game.
