Why weren't they done this way:

Maybe it makes feast a bit too powerful if you can "play" it using a trasher, so why not separate effects. For example;

Alternate Embargo:
+$2
Trash this.
---
When you trash this, place an embargo token on a supply pile of your choice. When a player buys a card, he gains a curse per embargo token on that pile.

It could even add an interesting "reaction" dimension.

Alternate Pillage:
Gain 2 spoils, trash this.
---
When you trash this, each player with 5 or more cards in his hand reveals his hand and discards a card that you choose.

I hope they take this approach with future oneshots.

Another interesting approach, making the cards IMO really more interesting.
But I agree that self-trashing has to be stronger than by another card, so separating the effects is the key.
But the problem is that cards might be trashed by opponents. So just let's say in 3-player game player one plays Saboteur and hits your Pillage. Now the third player has to discard and even the active player is attacked. So reaction-like Attacks aren't that good.

And that has the same problem if it gets trashed by an opponent.

My guess is that it does indeed make it too powerful. Alternate Feast combined with any TFB is just too good. Especially something like Upgrade or Apprentice...

I made a card like this for the self-trashing mini-set challenge. I like the idea, and think it could be fun on the right card.

Wasn't there originally an entire expansion of oneshots/self trashers (from which only Feast and Mining Village survived)? I thought oneshots were a dead concept, and was so surprised when Pillage was revealed. Guilds could very well have one. I also like to hope that there'll be expansions for as long as the game remains popular and good ideas still exist.

Not just Pillage but also Spoils and Madman. You can also make a case for Hermit, Urchin, Death Cart, and Squire, and probably others, especially if you're counting Mining Village as a one-shot.

The thing is though, Guilds is a small expansion, and probably also has a theme to live up to. It might be hard to squeeze weird stuff in. Besides, one-shots are kinda-sorta on theme in Dark Ages and we got a bunch of them; I'd be surprised if Donald had any more and said "I should hold these back for Guilds."

You're thinking of Intrigue, where one-shots was originally one of three themes.

The thing is though, Guilds is a small expansion, and probably also has a theme to live up to. It might be hard to squeeze weird stuff in. Besides, one-shots are kinda-sorta on theme in Dark Ages and we got a bunch of them; I'd be surprised if Donald had any more and said "I should hold these back for Guilds."

This was my thinking when I suggested we probably wouldn't see anymore one-shots. I'd still like to see a one-shot promo one day. I like one-shots.

I play Doppleganger. I trash it, and choose Doppelganger. I play the Doppelganger from the supply twice, playing Mountebank and Doppelganger.

Hooray, giving out 9 curses and coppers to each other player as early as turn 3!
