I have just learned that our beloved administrator has never seen this movie.  Use the space below to tell him how quickly he should correct this oversight.  Worse than opening Sab + Estate on a 5/2 split when Gov / Chapel is on the board?

I saw it about a year ago.  I was on a "movies I've never seen but really should have" binge.  It was alright, nothing super special.  The best thing to come of that binge was Schindler's List, which is the best movie ever.  Has theory seen that?

I mean surely you'd love a movie about a mafia family, why wouldn't you?

Ok - so this thread is now for everyone to go watch the movie and come back and admit the mistakes you've made in your life.

It's weird, I love movies, go to the cinema at least couple of times a week, yet there are masses of classics Ihave not seen

North by Northwest is currently sitting on the side, still wrapped

I once made an effort to watch the classics that are in the IMDb top 250, but I didn't get very far.

I did watch the entire Seven Samurai DVD though which has a 15 minute intermission branded into the movie.
There should be an achievement for that.

I have also failed on alot of the top classics.  Once you get pre 1970 or so, i have problems.  Tried to watch Citizen Kane twice and failed.

I have seen and rated ~1000 movies on imdb including many of the Top 250, but I haven't seen The Godfather either... yet.
But also haven't seen any James Bond movie (although I recently started watching the first two), Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter...

I really dislike mainstream movies, but I have problems with art movies too. Try watching Stalker without falling asleep. It's an interesting movie, but I can't get the hype. The same goes for 8 1/2 or Persona.

Citizen Kane on the other hand, CF, is IMO a great movie.

Skip 'em.

Yes. I think it helps if you recognize that a lot of Citizen Kane is good not because of the plot but just because it's "visually inventive," which is admittedly kind of a wonky reason to like a movie, but still.

I can see why you wouldn't like 8 1/2, though. I enjoy it but more as a film geek kind of person than for the reason I love, say, The Godfather.

QVist - I'd love to hear your recommendations then for movies that aren't too Arty but are sufficiently interesting to be outside the "mainstream".  I'm assuming something like "Lost In Translation" would be in your sweet spot?  Pi? Minus Man?  Drive?

The Godfather is popular - but I'd argue that its because its great, not because its mass market.

I've got 8 1/2 in my netflix queue, but I can never bring myself to press play.

As for the Bond films - I'd say:

Watch Dr. No, and if you enjoy it - watch the rest of the Connery films.

Most of the rest can be skipped if you didn't like Dr. No.

Goldeneye is the only Pierce Prosnan one worth watching.

Casino Royale (Daniel Craig) is excellent.  The otherone wasn't as good, but that's not going to stop me from watching skyfall.

Another one who's never seen Godfather.  And I really can't remember the last time I had time to watch a movie when I wasn't on vacation (and therefore had little interest in watching movies).

I wouldn't recommend it if you're not really motivated. Maybe this is my contrarian streak, but I don't think forcing yourself to see movies is worthwhile unless you are actively planning to become a cinephile. I think really getting into an art -- or many hobbies -- is like learning a language: Dabbling is kind of vaguely unsatisfying. For me, at least.

I already wrote in another thread which movies I like: http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=3783.msg77327#msg77327
I dislike "Lost In Translation". That's another movie I just don't seem to understand. For me it's just simply boring to me. I even tried it twice. The second time wasn't better. Pi is good, like you can see in the linked post. I don't know Minus Man and Drive is on my Watchlist, so I can't say anything about it either.
Generally speaking I'm a fan of Film Noir and Neo Noir. I like the mood and characters in those movies. Regarding Neo Noir:
Shutter Island, Memento, 12 Monkeys, Children of Men, The Usual Suspects or to name a few less known ones: Following, The Machinist, Brick, The Salton Sea
