Diplomacy 2: Fool Me Twice
« on: October 12, 2012, 12:48:53 pm »

If you fool me once, shame on you; if you fool me twice, it's Diplomacy!

I'm taking over leadership of GMing this game.  It didn't look like anyone else was willing to do it, so I assume there are no complaints.  This will be a standard game of Diplomacy, no variants (barring overwhelming support for a particular variant from the players).  I liked the way Davio handled it, so in homage to his prowess, I'm basically going to steal his intro-post and method of running the game.

General details:
  • 2 seasons (= 1 year) per week (actual deadlines will be determined later)
  • It will be a standard game with positions drawn from my imaginary bag (online randomizer)
  • I will be using an offline Judge program called jDip to enter and resolve all the moves
  • Experience with Diplomacy will be useful, but it's not required, just make sure you know the rules

What I need is basically 7 people willing to play. Signups will be closed next weekend (the 20th of October sometime). If we don't reach 7 players, I may consider some variant for less people, but will push for more people to signup. If we get more than 7 players, the winners will be drawn from my magical bag.

So if this seems like fun to you, just post that you're willing to play and you're (almost) in!

Links

There are most definitely other resources for strategy around the internet.  Here are two site where you can research to your heart's content.  But let me emphasize that knowing good strategy and doing well are two totally different beasts.  Diplomacy with fellow players is infinitely more important than knowing 5 different opening variations.  Lots of strategy tips have self-confirmation bias.  Maybe people say that Turkey-Austria is a super tough alliance to pull off and maybe it's true.  But I bet that it would be easier to do if both players hadn't read an article saying that it was tough.

Players signed up for random draw:
  • Galzria
  • Robz
  • Grujah
  • Qvist
  • Davio

I know, right? 3 whole minutes... Damn my slowness! Who knows what could've happened in that time?

Seriously though, just good timing. ;D

/out if there is more than 7 people, and Qvist is one of them, so that he doesn't get the short straw again.

And that first strategy site you linked came in quite handy last game. Read on general strategy and on your country strat to know what to expect.

Also, among last page in rule book, there is one with "22 rules", it is also a great reminder.

Don't worry about there being too many people.  I will run the randomizer until the first result in which Qvist is playing (assuming he signs up).

Also, I'll open a separate QT for each country, to talk there, so that people can later see what was going on. Others are welcomed to do so too.

Aww, c'mon! You know you want in! It takes so little out of your day to play. It's a lot like CE or Resistance in that respect. It's a little busier at the start, but dies down as the game goes on.

Bump-a-bump.  Would love more entrants.  This is a fun game.  Would an adjustement in Davio's schedule (Friday is Spring adjudication with Saturday for retreats, Monday is Fall adjudication with Tuesday for retreats and Wednesday--if needed--for builds) make anybody more interested in playing?

I'm surprised to see so little interest! This game should be right down the alley of f.DS members! It's pure Strategy with 0 elements of randomness. And at it's heart it's a very basic game! What's more, it's extremely challenging, a great mind game, and takes very little time! C'mon people, sign up!

This thread needs a hearty bump and more signups.  I would love to request the right from Theory to advertise in a General Discussion thread.  Many people may have blocked this part of the forums because they didn't want to see pages and pages of mafia games that they weren't even playing.

But Diplomacy is a super fun game.  It is strongly competing for my attention with other things.  Just like with mafia, I keep signing up for more games (I'm currently playing 2 games at a different website, and am in signups for a 3rd.)  Seriously, it's awesome.

You can make a post in the Other Board Games section.  At least some of those that block Forum Games do so out of disinterest in all Forum Games, not just Mafia.

Thanks, I realized that was true, but I almost considered blocking the forum games section due to Mafia pages that I wasn't reading.  Then I played my first game of Diplomacy, and decided you guys were cool, and I wanted to try a mafia game as well.  The rest is history.

It's a nice website as far as user-base goes.  But the interface sucks.  Try http://www.playdiplomacyonline.com.  This has a very nice interface, and is growing it's user-base as it is a very new website.

PDO is indeed playable from a mobile, though it doesn't have a mobile-specific app.  No idea about Robz's website.

omg, that is seven.  My dreams have been realized.

Question:

would you the players like to be responsible for setting up quicktopics/messaging systems with eachother?  Should I make a QT for every pair of powers?

I'd love to have the deadlines as follows:
spring deadlines: Tuesday 2pm EST
retreat deadlines (if needed): Wednesday 2pm EST
fall deadlines: Friday 2pm EST
Winter (adjustment) deadlines: Saturday 2pm EST (unless retreats are needed, then winter deadlines pushed back to Sunday after 24 hrs for retreating.)

If we start now, however, this puts the Spring 1901 deadline on the 25th.  I'm ok with that, are the players?

Just means that this week, plan on having orders in a little early, so you don't forget.

As for QT's, that's a loooot of them. 27? Yikes.

I guess we should all set up our own communication systems? Like, I would probably make QTs for every nation anyway cuz I want to have it all recorded at one place (but I wouldn't mind if you do it for me :P), but last time I had Robz on my IM (gtalk or MSN or something) and that was nice to have.

@Galz - 21 sounds more like it. :P

I highly doubt it.  They are from different countries, and both male, according to profiles.

Ok, I've decided to set up QTs for each power, that'll be a lot of QTs, but I'll just be sending each player 1 PM, with all 6 of their QTs.  (1 for each power that isn't you)

If you want a multiple player QTs, let me know.

I'd like votes from all the players before the end of the day on
1) whether this QT system is acceptable.
2) should we kick-off this week (ASAP) with the first Deadline on Dec 25th?

2) I would vote for delaying until after Christmas, but I don't feel particularly strongly.

I vote yes on both. I don't feel terribly strongly on either one though.

and my username is liopoil, not lipoil, which is what you have on the OP. lipoil seems like lip-oil, and idk what that means XD.

when we've decided on those two you'll post what power each of us are and a starting map?

As I'm a newb to this, shraeye go ahead and do what you feel what's best. I totally forgot all the rules since I read them when Diplomacy I was played. So I have to reread them soon.

1) Yes, but other communication is allowed too, right?
1b) What is the rule on communication during retreat/build?

2) I am all for it (Xmas here is 7th of Jan so I don't care)

Sorry there, I even noted that your name was a palindrome, and then mistyped it.  yes, once I hear from all players, PMs will go out, and a starting map will be posted.  Also a brief rules reminder.

Other communication is allowed, but it may be nice to have a record of conversations for the endgame, hence the QTs.  The rule as I see it is supposed to allow for no talking during retreats/builds.  But due to players being in different timezones, I'm worried that trying to enforce the silent period will hinder regular negotiations.  Please submit Builds/Removals/retreats as soon as possible, and avoid discussing it with other players heavily.  But continuation of other talks is 100% ok.

Aha, thanks for drawing my attention to this again.  I believe I am still waiting on responses from Davio and Robz.  The issue about Christmas has gone by, but I'd like them to verify that they are ready to begin.

Great! Let's get things started.  Powers have been rolled, QTs set up, and other needs seen to.

PMs should be going out now.  One rule about the QTs, absolutely NO sharing of QTs with powers who are not allowed access.

What if everyone in the QT agrees?
Then it seems acceptable; however, an easier solution would be to simply set up a new QT with all three powers.

The powers are:

Austria: Robz
England: Grujah
France: liopoil
Germany: Jimmmmm
Italy: Qvist
Russia: Davio
Turkey: Galzria

The starting board is below, see the opening post for some cool Diplomacy resources and tools.

Please send me the moves by PM before the deadline (I will try to be strict yet kind, a difficult and narrow path to walk).

First deadline is Tuesday, January 8th at 2pm forum time (Early submissions allowed and encouraged; if you change your mind at any time, new moves will be accepted up until I have posted the updated map)

Shraeye, how about creating a fresh topic in the Non-Mafia Games subforum? To avoid clutter.

And another request: Could you add the direct link to any attachments you include in your post?
With my browser (latest Chrome release) I can only see the paperclip, but no hyperlink to click on.
