But the official rules state "When playing multiple games, the starting player is the player to the left of the winner of the last game". If you're having a rematch, you're playing multiple games. Thus, the winner of the previous game should go last.

This is something my gaming group had done in M:tG for years.  Neat.

I agree strongly that the current player-order algorithm is terrible, despite being true to the letter of the rules, as it will rank players higher who abuse it more. The rule was not written for online play, and it makes no sense to apply it there. I really like playing multiple games against the same person, and I hate feeling like a sap for doing so.

If it's true that unranked games can set the 'just lost' flag, I guess I'll just start having an unranked account logged in from another browser and resign to it after every win. Councilroom doesn't record games less than a few turns, if I remember correctly, so it should be fine >_>

Of course, the rating system can just start taking into account player order when giving skill updates, and if it does a good job, you can't get a ratings bump by strategic management of turn order.

I guess, but a) it doesn't, and b) even if it did, people like to win, not just be assured that their TrueSkill loss will be correct with respect to their win%. And playing the same person twice will always make you less likely to win under the current system.

If two players match up, and they both either won or lost their previous games, how is turn order decided?
Is that then a coin flip?
