Card That Name! -- An Introduction
« on: September 25, 2012, 12:28:05 pm »
+2

While working on my entry for rinkworks' Mini-Set Design Contest #16: Treasure Card, I ended up not working around a mechanic but a name. "Hourglass" got stuck in my mind, and I couldn't think of anything unless it fit that name. Eventually, I came up with a card that starts "empty," then fills up quickly, slowly empties, rinse and repeat. It didn't do as well as I hoped it would, but it remains a favorite of mine simply because of the thematic fit.

That's why I'm introducing the Card That Name series. In each 'episode,' I will give you all the name of a card that has not yet been officially used (count me as those upset that Mercenary received such a meh card). This won't be a contest like rinkworks' series. This will simply be a fun exercise and discussion. If you have a card idea for the name given, share it. If you like a posted idea, but think it could use a tweak here or there, say so. If you think a current idea just isn't that good, let us know but be polite about it, please.

Also, if you know of any frequently-used fan card names, let me know in this thread. Or, if you just have some suggestions for names that you'd like to see, that's great!

Fan card names used a lot:

- Mercenary
- Ill-Gotten Gains
- Beggar
- Knight

...unluckily for them.  Some more popular fan card names that aren't yet taken:

- Investment
- Blood Money
- Castle
- Dungeon (although this was an outtake from the main set Donald X told us about in the Secret History of Dark Ages discussion thread)
- Hidden Village
- Bribe
- Broker
- Magician
- Flea Market
- Prospector
- Judge
- Surveyor

I posted an Assassin card yesterday in my "Coronation" thread. I don't know if I want to split the conversation about it into two threads. Mine is a targeted discard attack that gets stronger the more +actions you have. The opponent can hide their better cards so it doesn't get unfun.

This thread of mine never took off, but it's semi-related:

Go ahead and post your version (or a link to it) in the Assassin thread, please. It'll help to compare your Assassin to the others for sure.

That certainly will give me ideas for future episodes. Thanks! Any in particular that you or anyone else wants to see in an episode?

A few names I think a card could be built around: Casino, Sheriff, Circus, Lemonade Stand, Tavern, Swashbuckler, Cauldron, Orchard, Crazy Cat Lady?

Hmm, how's this?

Quote
Crazy Cat Lady
Action
$6

+1 Card
+1 Action
+1 Buy
-----------
When you gain this, gain as many Cats as there are in the supply.
(Setup: In games using this, add the Cats pile to the supply.)

Quote
Cats
Action - Attack - Curse
$0*

Reveal your hand. Return this to the supply, and deal out any Cats in your hand to your opponents, starting from the opponent on your left and continuing clockwise.
---------
-1 VP
(This is not in the Supply.)

(Rules clarification: If you reach yourself while still dealing out Cats, skip yourself and continue with the opponent on your left again.)

Casino
$4 - Action
+1 Action
Look at the top card of your deck; discard it or put it back. Each player discards the top card of his deck. Each player whose card has the highest cost in coins among cards discarded this way draws 2 cards.

I actually did play with this card for a while -- under the name Saloon, but Casino works just as well.

Casino
$4 - Action
+1 Card
+1 Action
You may trash a Copper from your hand.
--
At the end of your Buy phase, if the total cost in coins of all cards you have in play add up to exactly $21, +2 VP and gain a Gold or a Duchy.

It was a novelty card, of course, and the idea wasn't mine -- it was a card someone posted on BGG.  I tried different prizes and never did decide what I liked best.  Turned out to be fun as a curiosity but not very good for the game, as coordinate getting to exactly 21 really bogged things down.  And if Peddler or any of the Bridge family were in play, it was devilishly tedious to keep straight.

Still, I loved the idea and regret that it didn't really play.

--

Edit:  I should add that it was very important that this card cost $4 rather than $3.  At $3, you can get to $21 just by playing some mix of this card and the base Treasures, which, at $0, $3, and $6 keep you at multiples of $3 and on a collision course with the $21 mark.  At $4, you have to finagle.
