I was bored so I created some reviews on amazon for a few board games. Figured I'd share.

So... I take it you don't like Apples to Apples. :P

I like your review of Cards.

I totally agree on the apples to apples front. That game is atrocious.

I mean, I know its a matter of opinion and there are a lot of people who like it. But these people are objectively terrible human beings.

Indeed.  Cards Against Humanity improves on it, but only marginally.

I don't really like Apples to Apples, but I don't mind it.  I know a lot of people who enjoy it as a party game, so I don't mind playing.  Few people get my clever jokes though.

My best apples to apples moment:

Word was "touchy feely"
Answer wasn't JFK
It was: Heken Keller.

Biggest laugh I had in a while.

If you liked that part of Apples to Apples, you'd probably like Cards Against Humanity, though I imagine the jokes get old after you go through the deck once or twice.

My best apples to apples moment really is best for non-Americans (including myself):

Word was corrupt.

I won with Americans.

To be fair, Helen Keller is like an auto-win card.

Funnily enough, the two best Apples to Apples pairings I've seen both involved the same adjective:

Radiant Pond Scum, and
Radiant Marie Curie.

It's not great or anything but it's better than most "party games".

I did win "Sultry" by playing "Joan of Arc." It does depend on the chooser.

For example, I know to never be clever when one particular friend plays because she won't get it. Instead, I use that turn to throw out a dead card and hope that she makes some hilarious connection in her mind that would only baffle the rest of us.

And I would never bring out Apples to Apples or Cards Against Humanity in a serious game night, but they work well with nongamers.

BTW, if you're in the mood for more hilarious reviews, check out the review for FATAL at rpgnet. I'm behind a web filter, so I know better than to look that up now. If someone finds the link and is willing to post it here, that'd be great. Otherwise, I'll try to find it.

What is the FATAL RPG? It's the worst RPG out there. It's not just the fact that the mechanics are bad. The designer clearly had no idea how to interact with society so he put his warped perception into an RPG and tried to pass it off as something serious.

I myself only read a tiny fraction of the 900-page monstrosity, but I do recall that there are rules for determining a female's bust size. It is directly proportional to her charisma. The review is hilarious to read and all very true. He even compares it to Synnibar and explains why Synnibar may be a bad game but it's not an affront to all that is good and decent.

Apples to Apples isn't about others getting your clever jokes; it's about knowing the other players and feeding them clever jokes they would make.... ;D

That about sums it up.

Or if you have that one person who isn't very bright, you feed her the funniest-sounding card and let her make her own joke that she thinks is clever while everyone else politely smiles.

Not that I know anyone like that.

Casual sexism. I like it.

It has nothing to do with her being a woman. She just isn't the sharpest tool in the shed, and that makes our Apples to Apples games interesting. Every so often, I would get caught up in a brilliant use of a card only to forget whose turn it is.
