Masquerade/Spice Merchant combo. How to win?

We had the same strategy.  On turn three he hit 5 for a Hunting Party.  I hit 4 and bought a Silver.  What could I have done differently to win?

I'm not sure masq/spice merchant is the best opening. I'd rather you open masq/silver. I basically see two strong possibilities. One is masq/big money. Its really fast. The other is swindler with a hunting party chain, which can be devastating. I'd probably still favor masq though because the swindler player will end up seeing a bunch of those coppers turned curses come right back. Also hitting provinces with swindler is probably very bad since I expect the masq player to have the early lead.
